various teams actively engaged in practice basket-ball a short earnest practice was held in the colosseum at broadway and chestnut streets to accustom the men to a large floor for the game on saturday all of the sec ond team men were on hand and surely deserve praise for their ef forts which enable our team to put up the good showing that is char acteristic of lehigh basket-ball the second team squad includes mccoy schulz rooney price a k white griffith mayer and bell regular meeting well attended good papers on wednesday evening the members of the mining society enjoyed an exceptionally fine talk by dr wherry on geological ob servations in sweden the meet ing opened with a short business session which was followed by an account of hell's canyon gold mine by trotter 11 by means of sketches he showed the location of the mine and then gave the prin ciples used in extracting the ore here gold occurs in the metallic state in a red shale the only ob stacle experienced in the mining is that a mountain lies between the deposit and the only available water power this however is over come by a pipe line which carries the water to a place convenient to operate a mill and here the gold is extracted by a special process dr wherry introduced his topic by giving a short account of the history of the international geo logical congress which he attend ed last summer in stockholm the meetings of the congress were al ternated with trips to mines in the neighboring country and the great er part of dr wherry's talk was devoted to a description of these the first trip was to spitzbergen an island in the arctic sea which contains many features of geologi cal interest the next trip was to the gellivara mines which are in lapalnd sixty miles north of the arctic circle these are probably the largest iron mines in the world and 300,000 tons of this ore are shipped to america each year many other interesting trips were taken dr wherry illustrated his remarks by lantern slides showing pictures of the country and of the geological formations seen there at the conclusion of his talk he ex hibited some very fine mineral specimens which lie had collected on his trips musical clubs president entertains society at its february meeting on tuesday evening the me chanical engineering society en joyed the hospitality of dr and mrs drinker at its february meeting there was an unusually large turnout and the papers of the evening proved very interesting the first speaker was h t quiii 11 his subject being en gineering in the united states army the speaker laid particu lar emphasis on map-making bridges and field fortifications in making military maps time is the most important consideration and accuracy must be subordinate to speed mr quin described many of the instruments and devices used by army engineers for ob taining distances and elevations in the construction of bridges time is also of the greatest import ance the speaker described sev eral types of military bridges with reference particularly to the time in which they can be put up and ta ken down giving as an example a forty foot tripod bridge erected in twenty-nine minutes and re moved in eleven the next paper was locomo tive repair work by w j ma guire 12 he described the sayre shops of the lehigh valley rail road which are mostly devoted to repairing locomotives the main building washington the appara tus consists of a solar tank of glass in which water is vaporized by solar radiation the steam is used to drive a low pressure turbine and the inventor relies upon windmills to for the purpose of electing officers for next year g it baker ex lo was in town recently senior class book wrestling team the try-outs for the positions on the team that will meet cornell at ithaca on saturday were held on wednesday afternoon every bout was a hard contested one and al though several men have slight in juries now they will all be in fine form by saturday the results follow : 115 lb class herr 13 threw zimmerman 14 by a bar and chancery hold time 3 min 125 lb class st john 12 was compelled to quit wrestling with fowler 12 due to a bandage com ing off 135 lb class davies tl capt no contestant 145 lb class cook 13 threw graham 11 by a head hold in 6 minutes 30 seconds later cook threw birdsall 12 by an arm and head hold in 4 min 35 sec 158 lb class tice 13 no con testant 175 lb class reese 11 no contestant heavyweight ackerly 13 a new man is making rapid strides toward filling cox's place and hav ! ing no contestant practiced with j reese speaks on power station con-j struction the february meeting of the civil society was held last wed nesday night in saucon hall with its usual good attendance presi dent jannus presided the first paper of the evening on the johnstown filter plant was read by c c wheeler 12 and was a very detailed description of a filter plant at johnstown pa which draws its water supply from a local creek the passage of the water through the plant was described as first passing through broken con crete to remove solid matter such as leaves and sticks then being pumped up to a sedimentary basin and from there forced through sand filters from the filters the water flowed to a clear well and from there it was pumped to a reservoir five miles distant following mr wheeler mr w w cole manager of the public utilities department of the firm of dodge day and zimmerman of philadelphia pa read a paper on practical consideration in power station construction and prelimi nary reports mr cole's paper was an example of the reports en gineers have to make in estimating the cost of construction and opera tion of an electric railroad in it he showed how the most minute de tails had to be taken into consider ation in order that accurate esti mates might be obtained among the different items which were in cluded in and enlarged upon in his report were maps for construct ive purposes showing the road and cities en route outline of fran chises description of road and cities from the constructive stand point description of road and cities from a traffic standpoint outline of right of way privileges and an es timate of the probable net profit for the period of three years following the opening of the road at the conclusion of his report mr cole \ showed some charts by means of j which the financial operations of i the road could be computed graph ically and from which one could i tell at a glance the financial condi tion of the road in conclusion a sumptuous feed prepared especially for the occasion by jim
