wednesday's practice brings out many candidates a surprisingly large number of candidates reported wednesday afternoon for the first spring prac tice of the track team and the turn out augurs well for a very success ful season capt dawson took about twenty-five men of whom ten were freshmen for a brisk trot around the mountain he hopes to see this number augmented at the saturday practice lacrosse occupied the attention of twenty men in the cage and be sides capt dunn the following put in an appearance mccoy donald son hart fairhurst fithian speed shultz shand edwards miller jay clark rafter harris mitchell cooper lenker downs wright and carpenter mr breyer ol i lopkins will take charge of the men at the saturday practice all of the mat artists are in fine condition for the wrestling meet with lafayette on saturday after noon and the same team that met cornell will represent lehigh in this meet with the exception of watson who will fill the heavy weight position ackerly being laid up with a slight injury to his foot the team will be greatly handi capped for the remainder of the season on account of coach lynch's contract expiring this week he has been with the team one month and his absence will be felt severely the gym team's practice was very encouraging and capt bley is sanguine over the outcome of the rutgers meet tomorrow night prof f p mckibben prof f p mckibben sailed yes terday for panama he is join ing the excursion of american so ciety of engineers to the canal zone and expects to be away about three weeks lafayette to meet lehigh on the mat at lehigh gym the third wrestling meet of the season will be held with lafayette college at 3:30 tomorrow after noon in the lehigh gymnasium this is the first time in the history of wrestling at lehigh that we have been able to look forward to a meet in this sport with lafay ette and the fact that there is a friendly rivalry existing between the two institutions should bring out a large crowd although wrest ling is in its infancy at lafayette even more so than at lehigh from the time and effort both teams have put into the work we may rest as sured that the meet will not be without interest lafayette is not represented in the lightweight nor in the heavyweight class the con testants in the other classes are as follows — 125 pounds : belas lafayette st john lehigh 135 pounds smith lafayette davies capt lehigh 145 pounds : bannerman lafay ette ; mohr lehigh 158 pounds marshall lafay ette ; tice lehigh 175 pounds parsons lafay ette ; reese lehigh as the undergraduates will re call wrestling at lehigh has been placed by the athletic committee on the basis of a minor sport for one year the continuance of such recognition to depend on the show ing made this year this is the first opportunity given the students to see a meet on the home floor and it is hoped that they will show their appreciation of the sport by being there in force to cheer the team to victory tomorrow afternoon henry c becker 07 ! lenry c becker 07 died on monday feb 27 1910 at balti more md while at college he tools a prominent part in mustard and cheese activities and graduat ed with the degree of civil engi neer since leaving college he was connected with the virginia rail road co and later with the new york central lines since last april he was engaged as construc tion engineer at the palmerton plant of the new jersey zinc co 1 1 c was a member of the theta xi fra ternity freshman class meeting a freshman class meeting was held wednesday morning to notify the members of the class that back dues should be paid up immediately as bills are now due the business manager of the epitome spoke of the money due the management of that book for freshmen inserts and the class treasurer made a report on february 15th miss maude m coffin of new york city and norman n merriman 05 were married they will be at home in the near future at 330 w 56th st new york city considerable business transacted at the march meeting the regular monthly meeting of the lehigh university athletic committee was held in drown hall thursday march 2nd with the following members present n m emery prof john l stewart prof w l wilson prof f w white r m bird g r wood d r lowry r f wood and e f price a communication from the south bethlehem playground association was read in which a request was made for the use of certain parts of the athletic field during the summer months the following motion was passed the athletic committee recommends that sub ject to the approval of the trus tees the request of the south bethlehem playground association dated february 25th for use of part of the athletic field during the summer be granted and that what shall constitute the proper use of the field shall be left to the committee on administration of the trustees and the committee on grounds of the athletic com mittee wm f bailey 14 was awarded the contract for the publishing of the spring athletic programs basket-ball letters and jerseys were awarded to the following members of the 1911 team w l merkle e w cook b e cole s e muthart shellenberger and p j white the report of the grounds com mittee was accepted this report included the recommendation of improvements to the field house cage grandstand bleachers and backstop the most extensive im provement recommended was the rebuilding of the base-ball bleach ers it was ordered that estimates covering this work be procured im mediately it was decided that thirty-six sticks be furnished for lacrosse the same to be returned at end of season or paid for r m bird was appointed a com mittee of one to arrange for the publishing of a vest pocket card | for free distribution giving the dates of all athletic events of uni versity teams this spring base-ball practice well prepared papers read re freshments served the monthly meeting of the xaj'ts and science club was held on tuesday evening february 28th at the theta delta chi house the meeting was called to order by president kerr and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved c a hasek tl acting as temporary secretary owing to the absence of a v.-laub 12 inasmuch as the january meet ing had been postponed it was agreed to call it the english-ger man night papers were read by b s shafer 13 a r shaw tl and c a shultz to the first speaker chose as his topic sir walter scott and dwelt fully upon the life and writings of this notable author shaw's paper on the new york homes and haunts of edgar allen poe was as the title suggests unlike the usual pa pers on this american writer inas much as it dwelt not upon the life and works of poe but on his ex periences and dwelling places in and around new york city shultz in speaking of gerhart hauptmann followed much the same plan that the first speaker had used dwelling first on his life and then more at length on his plays describing and criticising them fully a discussion then followed in which professors hughes and blake and messrs robbins more shultz mccreary kerr and shaw participated a vote was taken and shafer's paper was decided upon as being the best of the three the meeting adjourned and re freshments were served after which music was furnished through the kindness of e a buckley tl and j r crellin 12 mustard and cheese a short meeting of the mustard and cheese association was held on wednesday afternoon several amendments were made to the con stitution of the association a meeting was called for next satur day to be followed by a rehearsal a coach will probably be present at that time culliney 12 was elect ed business manager to fill the po sition made vacant by the resigna tion of thompson 12 youry 12 and dunbar 13 were elected as sistant business managers a short chorus tryout followed there is plenty of opportunity for any man in college who can gracefully wave his legs there are seven or eight positions to fill in the cast all base-ball candidates are re quested to report to coach cald well at 1 30 tomorrow afternoon at the cage this includes not only the pitchers and catchers but all members of the squad as well notice students who have not already done so should at once fill out and return
