luzerne club at a meeting of the luzerne club banquet committee saturday after noon it w 7 as decided to hold a ban quet at the merchant house wed nesday night may 3rd this is the first attempt to gather the members in this manner and it is hoped that all will attend and make it a sue continued on third page delegates from many colleges in attendance it was to develop a sense of civic responsibility in the members of the undergraduate world that the intercollegiate civic league was launched five years ago and its largest annual convention held thus far opened at columbia univer sity last thursday at noon about one hundred and twenty delegates from forty-three colleges and uni versities sat down to luncheon in j earl hall as guests of the colum bia politics club president nicho las murray butler of columbia delivered the address of welcome in which he analyzed the elements that make for the success of the college man in politics the students of politics as serted dr butler should pay at tention to mastering principles of evidence we have been living in this country for some time past in a state of political lynch law au sorts of political reputations have been assassinated all sorts of po litical murders have been commit ted by what is practically a pro cess of lynch law through lack of understanding evidence and through lack of capacity to detect the highly seasoned rumor the truth or falsity of which might be ascertained through intensive in vestigation one engaged in this line of work should be guided by principles and not be led by devices and expe diencies the mind of the masses should be studied and all plans should be based on evidential truth the business meeting of the league held in kent hall after the luncheon was presided over by r bayard cutting in a paper on student volunteer watching at the polls g b compton 1912 ex-president of the columbia pol itics club made a flat assertion that robert taft son of the pres ident was mistaken in his conclu sions embraced in a paper read be fore the league at its meeting a year ago when he argued to the effect that the work of the volun teer watching by college students on election day in new york was not productive of very great re sults mr compton cited statistics that mr taft's conclusions were in error and tried to prove that the services of student watchers were highly valuable in getting an honest count after the reading of mr compton's paper harold content of columbia who was a candidate i for the assembly on the demo e a ziegler of state forestry academy speaks in chapel the lecture course in forestry was continued last friday by e a ziegler director of the state for est academy at mont alto pa who addressed a large audience of students and townspeople on the aspc ts of foi c-try mr ziegler began by speaking of the forest academy at mont alto the entire aim and object of w r hich is the furnishing of specially train ed men for the service of the state on its forests he continued : back in 1902 no state educa tional institution seemed willing to embark on a professional forestry course and the state commission was forced to furnish its own trained men accordingly the acad emy was organized giving a three years course of 48 weeks each it was determined that ten men a year would in a reasonable time furnish and maintain the number of for esters required by the state ser vice hence ten are appointed each year the selection of these men is entirely competitive mental and physical examination resulting in an excellent class of students last year seventy entrants between the ages of 18 and 25 contested for the ten appointments thus a strict civil service is already in force in the forest service of the state which no doubt will in time be extended to other departments the audience was referred to the woodman's handbook — bulletin 36 revised published by the unit ed states forest service which contains the most complete sum mary of the growth of forest trees in the united states thus far pub lished it is based on the careful analysis of thousands of trees and shows that few trees will produce a crop of good posts 6 inches in diameter in less than twenty years ; nor will they produce pulp spool handle extract fuel wood or mine props 8 inches in diameter in less than 25 to 40 years ties from 11 inch trees in less than 40 to 75 years and saw timber trees 1 to 2 feet in diameter in less than 75 to 150 years in speaking of investments in forestry mr ziegler said that the state is severely criticized by for esters at large for emphasizing the time interval that forest trees re quire to become merchantable on the ground that it will discourage prospective investors mr ziegler summarized his lee ture as follows : forest land properly stocked with young trees of good timber continued on third page the brown and white lehigh university south bethelhem pa tuesday april 11 1911 the aspects of forestry vol xviii baseball team beats army civic league convention no 46 athletic committee meets trims west pointers by a score of 6 to 3 i a'high gained a brilliant victory over the army at west point last saturday the game was well j played on both sides although the raw weather made it difficult for either pitcher to produce the best kind of work from the first it was evident that army had no chance the scoring began in the second inning for lehigh fisher cracked out a clean two bagger and scored when bor den followed his good example borden hurt his knee sliding into third and driscoll who was put in to run for him scored the second run on mac hardy's double the next three men were easy outs west point scored three runs in i her half of the inning hyatt first up was passed he took second on cook's hit stole third and scored on milliken's single cook had meanwhile gone to third and j scored when kempsmith dropped j the ball milliken stole second and \ scored on riley's single lehigh annexed tw r o more in the fifth shellenberger got his base on whiteside's error and immedi j ately stole second brady got his base on balls and both scored when rose singled our last two runs came in the ninth inning as in the previous j innings they came before any put outs had been recorded kemp smith led off with a pretty single and was advanced to third when j shellenberger likewise got a one base hit fie immediately stole second and followed kempsmith home when driscoll poked out a swift one which the second base continued on fourth page leather bound epitomes delayed ( wing to the death of mr lip pincott head of the firm that is binding the 1912 epitome the leather 1 sound copies of the book have been delayed it is likely that they will be placed on sale at the supply bureau tomorrow morning authorizes season tickets for spring sports the regular monthly meeting of the lehigh university athletic committee was held in drown hall thursday april 6 with the follow ing members present : w a wil bur \ 7 ice pres emery prof wil son s t harleman r m bird d r lowry g m donaldson and price the minutes of the execu tive committee of march 9 and march 22 were read and approved and their recommendations adopted these recommendations covered the building of the new base-ball bleachers and the 1911 foot-ball schedule as published in the brown and white of march 24 mr bird reported the completion of the publication of programs for the spring sports and the issuing of a 2.50 season ticket for all the spring sports at home viz : four teen events counting the lafayette base-ball game as two the report of capt j m bley of the gym team was read and ap proved the l being awarded to r w jannus and the following men receiving the monogram l g t : j m bley r w jannus j w tremlett j bailey c d kes ter e bowen g p flick s el liott and c w pettigrew a report from capt davies of the wrestling team was read and w r as referred to the executive com mittee for careful investigation the establishment of a training ta ble for the relay team was author ized for this year the following resolution was presented and adopted : resolved that season tickets to all home events for the season of 1911-12 be issued to the alumni and that the alumni representatives of the ath letic committee be empowered to devise such system for the distribu tion of such tickets as may seem to them most expedient the following complete schedule of 1911 track team was adopted apr 28 inter-class track meet at home apr 29 perm relays phila may 3 haverford at home may 6 rutgers at home may 17 lafayette easton may 20 swarthmore swarth more may 27 inter-collegiates 1 lar risburg there will be an important meet ing of the sophomore cotillion club at the chi phi i louse on wed nesday april 19 at 7:30 p m tt lis necessary that all members be present if possible
