to which the jun iors will be hosts what more magic words are there than those two — junior prom they denote the acme and clim ax of all social gatherings in this day and age of colleges their influence is such as to set a-flutter more than one maidenly heart and to cause a smile of rare anticipation to en hance the faces of the erstwhile laboring students this week end is the best in history the biggest things are happening right now and there isn't a doubt that junior prom will i larga part in making the anticipated and anxiously awaited house party successful beyond contemplation inter-fraternity tea dance to con on page 3 col 6 spring is in the air and the sound of feminine laughter so strange on the campus rings through the air as the fair ones cause the very atmosphere to be charged with some dyna mic power which bespeaks good times the drab and mon otonous surroundings of yes terday have become invested with a glow which is marvel ous in its effect on student psy chology house party as a cure to the evils and worries of the daily grind cannot be surpassed and spring house party is a menace to the ideals of any mysoganist last night was the big event at which the sophomores did the honors and they displayed a knack for providing enter tainment which bids fair to ri val the reputations of their pre decessors in this line lehigh has long been famous for the way in which its dances and proms have been run and judg ing from the cotillion of last fine inspection passed by r o t c john a covert to edit burr williams prizes in second year english given unit appeared in better form than any time during the year new editor has record of several years on burr and b & w boards others advanced donor is a foremost lehigh alumnus — all sopho single ex ception boston college is the only team that has turned back the blue and white this was accomplished at philadelphia when the victors played error less ball to crash thru 3-2 among villanova's victims are numbered princeton c c n v temple and ostepathy princeton was humbled by vil lanova by the count of 7-4 this being the first win for villano va since the innauguration of the series between the two in 1910 last year villanova pushed aside the lehigh play ers in a closely fought battle and it is generally conceded that the brown and white's last year's diamond delegation was superior to that of this year whereas the main liners evi dence considerable improve ment over their last season's performances aces of the blue and white are jacob a local lad masciadri and the pitchers crane and griffiths smith a freshman has pitched a pair of victories for the visitors against rutgers last satur day lehigh performed most creditably dietrich twirled a pretty game and was well sup ported if tomorrow's playing is on a par with that of last saturday a right tough tus sle may be anticipated coach jing johnson is con on page 3 col 2 on saturday afternoon fol lowing the frosh baseball game the brown and white cinder and field artists will match brains and brawn with the new york university track men the meet should provide no end of thrills as n y u has a reputation for fast and strong teams this year's team however appears to be a dark horse since they have not had any dual meets and must be judged solely by the record of last year and by the special events at the perm relays on franklin field last sat urday a most evenly balanced quartet finished second to rut gers in a spectacular battle for the middle atlantic states mile relay title and also third to maryland and fordham in a match relay at the same dis tance this would indicate a very fast set of quarter milers paul williard tied for fifth place in the pole vault cross ing the bar at eleven feet three inches n y u will lose by gradua tion six of the men who plac ed in the dual meet against lehigh at ohio field n v last year but on the other hand will gain many new men who were barred last year due to the one year rule these men particularly the men of the frosh relay team of last year will help make a very strong team in the dashes our frosh team of last year took the special frosh mile re lay but this year this event will prove to be a much stiffer battle since the n y u frosh relay team took third to yale and perm in the freshman one mile relay championship of america at the perm relays the anchor man of this team was timed individually at fifty and a fraction seconds the brown and white team con on page 2 col 3 the lehigh university board of control of athletics met last monday and transacted some very important business one of the major changes effected thru the meeting was chang ing the name of the newly ac quired steel field to that of lehigh field there will be no difference in the uses of tay lor field and lehigh field ex cept that the latter will be most likely the scene of practices for the frosh teams in view of the excellent rec ord compiled by the basketball team it was decided to award major letters to the members of this team herbert c hobbs 28 was also awarded a major letter in swimming this award was made in recognition of his feat in capturing the middle atlantic diving crown an effort will be made to transfer the lacrosse game with stevens that is scheduled to be played at hoboken on sat urday to taylor field the reason for this is to afford a better program for the house party guests who will be here at that time it is also pos sible that a lacrosse game will be arranged for alumni week the board approved a sched ule of four games for the foot ball scrubs for next season this however must await fac ulty approbation before it be comes effective this should be a decided aid in getting more men out for football in the fall dave petty an alumni mem ber of the board is to investi gate the advisability of instal ling a nine hole golf course in say re park con on page 3 col 2 a discussion was held on the 0 d k plan for election of the concluding event of sub freshman day on may bth will be a concert given by the combined musical clubs and the university band to be fol lowed by a dance which will be run under the auspices of the clubs with their own orches tra this concert is the one at which the clubs are to be found at their best for after many months of diligent practicing and rehearsing and the com pletion of several successful concerts mr luckenbach is now prepared to entertain with an even better home concert than in previous years this statement in itself will predict a delightful evening's enter tainment for in bettering its record of the previous seasons the organization has gone thru many changes the mandolin club under the direct supervision of mr luckenbach has really devel oped into a mandolin symphony for with the addition of kettle drums bass viol bass horns several banjos sliding trom bones and many other instru ments the club has attained over twice the size that it has ever before enjoyed amongs its several features are the hawaiian quartette composed of messrs picking 2 7 phillips 27 wilhelm 28 and beggs 2 7 and the jazz quintette a group of three mandolins , and two banjos meyers 26 and wiegand 28 are the additional members in this specialty unit the glee club and the band are under the direction of dr t edgar shields this club has also increased in size and improved in performance under his direction and from reports still coming in about its last performance over the radio have been exceptionally well re con on page 3 col 2 lehigh lacrosse team beats lafayette squad easily for brown and white teams this victory is seventh consecutive win over maroon junior prom to be climax of brilliant social season committee has prepared an entertainment guaranteed to excel in magnitude all past functions decorated gym to be ball room visitors lack experience the annual inspection of the lehigh r 0 t c unit was held here last monday and tuesday the inspecting offi cers were major r m dan forth u s field artillery and major thompson lawrence u s infantry the inspection was probably the most general and thorough that a lehigh or ganization has ever had con on page 2 col 6 on monday the inspectors visited classes and asked ques tions on general class work and theory the freshman class came out a little ahead of the sophomores in this but both classes had relatively high grades on tuesday morning the four companies formed on packer avenue and marched to taylor field where the review and inspection was held all arms equipment and uniforms were thoroughly looked over the final meeting of this year's burr staff was held last wednesday night in the burr room for the purpose of elect ing new members and officers for next year mr robert trainer as acting chairman presided and the meeting open ed with roll call elections then followed and the men successful in obtaining berths on next year's staff were : editor-in-chief john wilmurt the constitution as revised was then read and a discussion of each of the parts followed several changes were passed con on page 2 col 5 henry fretz cup is won by elliott stevens lacrosse men to face ß & w announcement has just been made of the names of the sophomores who won the four prizes gi^en each semester as the williams prizes in sopho more composition in awarding these prizes last term a class-wide competition among the sophomores taking second year college english was instituted every student was required to write a term paper of not less than 1 500 words and to submit it as a requisite in the course these papers were judged by mem bers of the english department upon the basis of originality literary merit and value of sub ject matter con on page 2 col 3 the class was divided into two parts alphabetically as re quired by the terms of the en dowment in the first half r p hebard writing on the controversy between huxley and gladstone over genesis received a first
