a goodly number of students and residents of the bethlehems were present at the lecture given by charles enzian 01 in the physics laboratory on tuesday evening mr enzian is the engineer in charge of the pennsylvania divis ion of the bureau of mines his lecture and the subsequent talks by two of his assistants dealt mainly with the rescue work of the bureau of mines and the con struction and use of various life saving appliances mr enzian first gave numerous statistics contrasting the casualties as shown by the mining records in our own and other countries par ticularly belgium in every case he showed plainly that the mining industry is a much more dangerous one in this than in most of the oth er great mining countries he then contrasted statistics taken from va rious mining districts in our own country and likewise reviewed by way of comparison the great an thracite and bituminous fields in the united states congress having authorized the bureau of mines to make exten sive tests in an attempt to ascertain the cause and remedy the mine cas ualty evil mr enzian reviewed the work thus far done by the depart ment a large plant was erected by the bureau in pittsburg at which tests are continually being made and mining appliances per fected miners safety devices are also tested and improved wherever possible mr enzian claims that the great mine disasters are mainly the re sult of three causes all of which are due to the extensive portion of foreigners engaged as mine labor ers ignorance carelessness and indifference are the terms by means of which mr enzian connected our foreign element with our great na tional mine disasters numerous lantern slides showing the work of the pittsburg plant and giving detailed views of the construction and operation of the various mine safety devices served to make everything perfectly clear to the audience a demonstration of the various uses of the triangle bandage first aid to the injured and miner's kit was given by one of the employees of the bureau of m.ines there followed an explanation and a thor ough test of the artificial respira tory apparatus employed by the bureau by the use of this con on wednesday afternoon the tennis team played at easton the first of its two matches with lafay ette and was defeated 7 to 1 the result of the match was a sur prise to all who were intimate with the playing ability of the two teams in the singles cooper was the only man to win although griffen played his man to the limit a brown and white victory was ex pected in the doubles but lafay ette sprung a surprise and won both matches on next wednesday a return match will be played on the uni versity courts here and the team expects that hard work and a dif ferent arrangement of men will turn the tables score : — cooper i all for the year 1911-1912 will be held in the auditorium of drown memorial i tall on wednesday may 24th at 1 30 p m students who wish to retain their present quarters for next year must give notice of their intentions in writing before that date all rooms not so reserved will be in the drawing the coast and geodetic survey has just issued an article on pri mary base lines at stanton tex and deming n mex by wil liam bowie c e 95 inspector of geodetic work of the survey the most hotly contested dual meet of the season resulted in a tie when lafayette and lehigh each drew 52 points from the an nual event which took place on march field on wednesday after noon lafayette should be thank ful that the result was a tie for she was only saved from defeat by the inherent grit of her little flyer spiegel me not only won twenty points for her but the last five that he won were the ones that saved the maroon and white colors from the dust and kept the bell of pardee 11 all from ringing backwards excitement was tense when the broad jump the last event of the meet was started the score stood 49 to 47 in favor of the brown and white and lehigh needed sec ond place to tie and first place to win the preliminary jumps threw one lafayette man bentley out of the running and this left the finals open to spiegel graham and murphy as the jumps became longer excitement increased spie gel cleared 19 ft 9 in and murphy did 20 ft 1 in graham raised it to 20 ft 3 in spiegel came back and beat graham by an inch but ( iraham took another jump and tied him spiegel's next effort was 20 ft 7 in and murphy raised the hopes of the brown and white by jumping 21 ft but it was not al lowed as his foot had gone an inch over the take-off spiegel in his final effort cleared 21 ft 6 in thus winning first place the other events were as well contested in the century spiegel did 10 sec with murphy crossing the line right at his heels lehigh took two places in the two-twenty murphy and williams winning in fine style in the quarter thomas of lafayette had things his own way going at a 51 sec gait schock of lafayette won the mile handily in 4 mm and 35 sec mick el's time being about 4 mm and 40 sec capt dawson ran his usual good race in the two mile winning easily lehigh won both places in the pole vault but lafayette overcame this by reciprocating in the high jump lehigh took both places in both weight events artie wells throwing the hammer into the woods with great glee i lis best heave was w ft while lafayette could not beat 90 ft lafayette captured first place in both
