keeping the hits well scattered except in the sixth when state scored her final two runs in the second with one gone fisher singled past haddow but the next two batters succumbed to klepfer's benders craig opened the first inning by waiting for four bad ones kelly promptly sacrificed him to second from which position he brought across the first tally when work man's hit got past rose and dris coll college why do we not have a literal magazine or pa per the seniors at least can remember the existence of such a paper in their freshman year this paper called the burr met a sudden and disastrous end due to reasons not best stated here ( wing to the comment raised the matter has been seriously con sidered and plans have been made to re-establish the burr in the fall it has already met with the approval of the arcadia and is awaiting now the action of the faculty in a short time cards will lie sent out to the student body to get an idea of its opinion upon the project and the real success of the plan depends upon how these cards are answered by the students the main idea of the burr is to represent the literary side of le high which although lehigh is considered a technical institution is surely strong enough to warrant the production of such a paper the new paper is not intended to be a rival of the brown and white but it will leave the publishing of college events to that organ and take upon itself matters chiefly lit erary contributions will not be con lined solely to the editorial board but will be expected and welcomed from the entire student body here the hitherto obscure novelist or poet may burst suddenly into the lime light and realize his fullest ambi tions for fame and glory even jokes may appear now and then the paper will constantly be un der the supervision of capable fac ulty advisers and nothing but the best will be published it is indeed time that the latent literary powers of the students should be given an opportunity to display themselves and with the heart co-operation of the entire student bod a paper may be pub lished which will exceed the high est expectations in addition to the publishing of short stories poems jokes knocks and drawings there will also be a part devoted to full accounts of social affairs such as house parties dances etc and also to resumes of athletic seasons criticisms on books and plays and editorials on college occurrences and activities owing to the time being limited the tirst editorial board will be chosen by the promoters of the idea continued on fourth page at a meeting of the mustard and cheese faculty of forestry university of toronto lectured this morning at 11:00 o'clock in drown memorial hall on personal reminiscences of the earligr forestry movement in the united states before a large gathering of students and towns people dr fernow gave an informal talk on the more intimate and per sonal history of the early struggles of forestry reform in the united states largely personal reminisc ences in the seventies when dr fern ow a professional forester from prussia came to this country the first attempts to inform the public of the existence of this profession and of the need of its application in this country had just taken shape an agency had been estab lished in the u s department of agriculture to report on the sub ject in 1876 but nothing of import ance in practical direction had transpired when the first public convention was called at cincinnati early in 1882 the intimate history of this meet ing being to some extent of a po litical character was given in con siderable detail in 1884 dr fer now became secretary of the asso ciation which was the result of that forestry congress and for 15 years was closely identified with its work the principal aim of the associa tion was to secure the federal for est reservations and their adminis tration in 1886 dr fernow was called to take charge of the federal for estry division the amusing simple conditions in which he found his office contrasting with the present magnificent expansion the development of the forest reservation policy was traced with much personal detail showing the many accidents favorable and un favorable which beset legislation and the peculiar methods by which such legislation is secured in wash ington special account was made of the troublesome period when i'resident cleveland narrowly es caped indictment for his too vigor ous application of the law permit ting him to set aside forest reser vations the peculiarly indirect way in which finally an administration of the forest reserves was secured also formed one of the episodes which i r fernow bad selected as illustra tive of the struggles of a reformer the brown and white lehigh university south bethlliilm pa friday may wednesday by the maroon and white by a score of 6-1 but the match was much closer than the scode shows for lehigh cooper won his sin gles defeating murphy after a long deuce set in the doubles both
