work of first two weeks in response to coach dickson s call for foot ball candidates about a dozen men appeared on the opening of practice september 11th . since then the squad has been growing in size until saturday it reached a maximum strength of thirty-five during the examina tions fewer men were out than in previous seasons and the work was consequently hampered . during the first days the work was of the lightest nature such as kicking catching punts and prac tice with the forward pass later some simple formations were used in running through signal drills each day after the preliminary work in kicking and catching punts the entire squad was divided up into sets of four and sent down the field under punts this gave men the needed practice in tackling and also the back del d men received the requisite experience in catching punts and dodging tacklers the first scrimmage was held saturday afternoon a varsity squad consisting of lawson treat martin keese black avylie wood bilheiiner knox kennedy and street was lined up against a scrub eleven for a half an hour various men were substituted at times so that nearly the entire squad was utilized a few freshmen have appeared and promise to give material aid to the team among them are wylie house wilson and siege i there should be a great many more from this class however from last year's squad there are treat martin j h smith moncrieff swope sehenck e c smith street law son bilheimer heard hoffman kitchell sosuowski reese r wood g wood trotter black knox donaldson kennedy and hess new additions to the squad include cox vela o smith cann and d wood it is much too early to make a definite forecast in regard to the season in contrast to last year the changes will have to be in the back field instead of the line how ever both promise to be heavier than last year and quite as fast lehigh has a much narder schedule than for a number of years past and to make it a success requires the help of every man whether he is an experienced player or not held in packer hall the first college meeting of the year 1909-1910 was held in the assembly hall in packer hall on friday september 24th presi dent treat conducted his first meeting as senior president land he was greeted with cheers as he arose to open the meeting the time honored custom of starting the meeting with v one good le high was observed and packer hall rang out with the familiar old yell . president treat read a note from dr drinker in which the presi dent of the university expressed his deep regret on not being able to be present and also the hope that the same good feeling of mutual understanding continue as it has the past dr drinker's note was written in his character istic warm language director of outdoor athletics dickson who is more familiarly known to the students as üßy'u by dickson was called upon by presi dent treat to talk on the pros pective foot ball season the applause which greeted mr dick son's appearence was long and hearty and in entire keeping with the honor due him for the work he has done in the past mr dickson spoke at some length about the team and pressed home the necessity for a large squad of men and for consistent backing of the team by attendance at cheering practice treat followed up mr dickson s talk in a like vein and urged all to heed the remarks of the coach the reading of the college customs gave occasion for treat to express the hope that they be rigidly observed this year particu larly those customs concerning the privileges of upper classmen he also asked that the magazines in drown hall be handled by their users in the proper manner and that they do not be mutilated in any respect the meeting adjourned after the announcement of the appointment of the following committees : cheer leaders c s kenney mo c l downs mo i p troutman mo h m kiley mo 11 a floyd 10 r n williams mo hustling committee - c jon continued on fourth page the brown and white lehigh university 5 south bethlehem pa tuesday september 28 1909 college meeting vol xvii opening day at lehigh address by dr henry s drinker presi dent of lehigh university and prospects of our alma mater doubtless you have heard of the gift announced at the alumni luncheon in june from our good friend and trustee mr john fritz of a new engineering testing labora tory this will take the place of the laboratory heretofore located in the basement of packer hall mr fritz has ever been a consist ent and steady friend of the uni versity though he passed his eighty seventh birthday during the last month he sets us all an ex ample in his capacity for work and attention to detail known and revered through our country as the father of the steel industry in america he is honored throughout the world as a great engineer a leader in the world movement of progress of the last half century and it is a matter in which we lehigh men may take much pride that this great engineer should en dorse our work here with so mark ed a manifestation of approval and confidence after further explaining certain changes and improvements that had been made in the various buildings with the object of attain ing more class room dr drinker further said — a good friend of the university who is also an ardent supporter of the growing movement and senti ment in our country for forest pre servation — has donated to the uni versity a fund for the spread in this locality of knowledge of forestry arrangements are be ing made for a course of public lectures on the subject — for the benefit not only of the student body but of the public in this region one of the most import ant public questions of the day is the conservation of our natural re sources people are waking up the truths that engineers have known and sought to enforce and now that our public authori ties are generally and intelligently interested — it is the duty of institutions like lehigh to take active share in the spread of knowledge of these matters existing schools for teaching forestry till for the present the continued on second page lehigh university started its forty fourth session last wednesday with a total registration of about seven hundred which number in cludes two hundred new students this is practically the same attend ance as last year and is as large an attendance as the trustees and faculty deem it wise to encourage with the university's present en dowment and plant president drinker announced the following changes in the teach ing staff prof robert w hall head of the department of biology has in addition been appointed lecturer on forestry asst prof barry macnutt becomes associate pro fessor of physics ; asst prof percy hughes professor of philosophy and education the title of dr c s fox is changed from assist ant professor of modern languages to assistant professor of romance languages dr v s babasinian and mr james h wily have been promoted from instructorships to assistant professorships in the de partments of chemistry and physics respectively frank w white m d tufts has been appointed assistant pro fessor of physical education maurice l dolt ph d brown instructor in industrial chemistry h d gruber e e lehigh in structor in electrical engineering ; r j gilmore b a lehigh in structor in biology ; c m kilby ph d johns hopkins instructor in physics ; b r schealer e e lehigh instructor in electrical engineering s leßoy brown ph d university of california instructor in physics chester a pierle b s de pauw assistant in qualitative analysis f b kingsbury a b harvard assistant in elementary chemistry prof charles j goodwin who was away from the university during the second term of the past year has resumed his duties as head of the department of greek in his opening address to the student body dr drinker said in part — we have every reason to feel buoyant over the present condition foot ball no 1
