navy's strong team offered inpenetrable defense to brown and white lacrosse team defeated by middies in fine game widdowfield scores fine orchestras season closed cotillion to be exceptional whitey kaufman's orches tra to furnish music clever favors initial dance previous lehigh dances the decorations are being ex ecuted by a well known firm and will be appropriate to the occa sion the gym will be trans formed with beautiful and ar tistic hangings and streamers the walls will be covered with lattice work and streamers will run from the sides of the gym up into a high tent shape in the center brown and white will be the predominat ing colors and unusual decora tive features will add to the beauty of the surroundings con on page 4 col 1 ) the prom committee has planned several innovations for the occasion which it is not willing to divulge at the pres ent time these innovations will take various forms and during the past week-end the junior prom committee has finally completed the elaborate plans which will make this year's prom not only the ma jor attraction of houseparty this week but also the out standing social event of the col lege year no effort has been spared to make friday eve ning's affair a complete success orchestra decorations favors programs food — all have been planned to contribute to the at tractiveness of the evening's entertainment louis cohen has been pre vailed upon to send to the prom the best orchestra that has ev er played under his direction at any college houseparty the music alone will put the affair far above the standards set at the lehigh lacrosse team dropped its first game of the year to the exceptionally strong and fast navy team when the brown and white lined up against the future admirals at annapolis on saturday al tho the naval academy team took the game by the one-sid ed score of 8-1 the willow bearers from lehigh had the distinction of being the first team to score against the mid dies this year only last week the navy trampled lafayette by a 23-0 score so an 8-1 count is no disgrace the navy team depended up on team-work and good pass ing rather than on individual playing for its points they displayed a very strong attack especially in the first half and they also possessed a defense which was practically inpene trable it was not until late in the second half that wid dowfield was able to get thru and score a goal for lehigh con on page 4 col 3 there was never much doubt about the result of the game the navy started to score early in the first half and at the end of the first per iod the score stood 5-0 the brown and white team put up an unexpectedly strong defense during the entire game how ever which kept the seamen from running up a much larger score many substitutions were made both in the first enthu siasm that prevails at the op ening of any big affair will be present and taylor gym is to be beautifully transformed for the innaugural the cotillion is to be held on thursday night april 29 and special permis sion has been secured from the faculty to run the dance from nine until two thus providing five glorious hours of dancing and entertainment con on page 4 col 7 the music is to be furnished by whitey kaufman and his orchestra and the occasion will mark the bethlehem debut of these premier musicians they have been long recognized as one of the nation's leading dance orchestras and they have received a greater popularity throug hthe success of the vic tor records that they have re corded the committee has achieved a big accomplishment in securing this orchestra and music of such paramount qual ity is certain to insure suc cess in the way of enter lehigh university calendar elaborate plans such as have never been contemplated before in the history of lehigh mark the opening days of this week and the path to a better part of thß week in the appearance of house party the orchestras engaged are of the highest qual ity the entertainment altho not extensive in sport lines is well rounded out and will keep the fair femmes active every hour of the day as well as most of the night probably by six o'clock thursday evening most of the damsels representing various sections of the country will be on hand to meet their old and new friends at the various houses and to prepare for the sophomore cotillion to be held at taylor gymnasium that night for this occasion whi tey kauffman's orchestra has been engaged and to those who know whitey nothing need be said his prestige in the east is well established and his ap pearances at princeton perm and other large institutions will surely warrant the price of subscription and a large atten dance for this initial function the junior prom will follow on friday evening at the same place with louise cohen's or chestra striking out the airs this dance will probably be the feature dance of the week-end since there will be no college dance on saturday night the orchestra of eleven pieces has been playing at several yacht clubs in the vicinity of new york city during the past win ter and has scored success at lehigh dances before con on page 3 col 6 on saturday afternoon the scheduled baseball game with villanova will offer the fair on friday afternoon there will be held a tea dance at the sigma phi place and with no college activity scheduled for this time the affair should re ceive a large attendance the mustard and cheese club completed a successful season with their return from a tour of philadelphia and newark on last friday morn ing the 1926 season was re markable not only for its un usually good production but be cause of the fact that it was the first season in which two performances were given in bethlehem and also the first season in which a tour includ ing two cities was made wednesday morning at ten o'clock the entire organization of mustard and cheese left for philadelphia about seventy five men were needed to put on the performance there includ ing the stage manager and his seven assistants who preceded the rest of the travelers by sev eral hours a special car was added to the train and an ex tra baggage car was used for the stage properties costumes etc upon arriving in phila the entire troupe was installed in the hotel sylvania where they made away with a meal of huge proportions and were divided into groups and assign ed rooms in the hotel a re hearsal was the next thing in order and this was held in the ball room of the bellevue strat ford in spite of the recent date of the closing of mask and wig one of the most famous of col lege dramatic organizations mustard and cheese had no trouble in entertaining the no toriously particular and effete immediately after the rehear sal preparations were made for the performance which was al so given at the bellevue strat ford the men had all been through the ordeal of a perfor mance on two previous occa sions and the experience gain ed was sufficient to insure the successful performance which became a reality when the cur tain went up at 8:30 con on page 4 col 5 tennis team to meet penn wed tigers humble frosh batsmen princeton outhits outgen erals plebes in easy victory perm's strong team offers stiff opposition in mid week meet the brown and white tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of na vy last saturday losing by the close score of 5-4 the margin of victory was so close as to cast no discredit on the home team for navy has a well bal anced squad lehigh won two of the six singles and two of the three doubles and was evi dently handicapped in that they were not in as good condition as the navy team this may be accounted for by the fact that the weather dur ing the past week was so poor that only about one day was fit for the brown and white men to secure practice the team was somewhat shaken up for this meet and the order was radically chang ed although the personnel of the team remained unchanged the biggest upset of the day was the victory of lyman over sullivan the lehigh ace this match was a big surprise and the lehigh man was decidedly off his game however he stag ed a comeback in the doubles and paired with mcfadden easily won out mcfadden and miller playing number two and three respectively were both defeated although miller's scores were close trumbull in the number four position and doty playing number five scored lehigh's only victories in the singles as liversidge was defeated in the sixth position while this showing was not so good it was only because of the slightly erratic play of the brown and white men due to the lack of practice that caused this result con on page 3 col 7 in the doubles lehigh met with greater success it is rather a coincidence that each lehigh man had a hand in win the student branch of the a s c e held their regular monthly meeting on friday evening april 23 in the phy sics lecture room the meet ing was opened at 8:00 p m by president shepperd the first business of the meeting was the andrews talk was on the design and installation of a sewerage system in the city of easton probably the most important problem that confronts a grow ing village is the proper dis posal of waste commonly known as sewerage proper disposal of this waste is essen tial to the health of the com munity for many years this problem was taken care of in the lehigh valley by simply digging cisterns and draining all the waste matter into them this was made possible by the geological formations in this region which is essentially limestone and abounds in caves and caverns hence in such cities as allentown bethlehem and easton it was only neces sary to sink a cistern into one of these caverns and drain all waste matter underground but of later years the rapid growth of these cities made such means of waste disposal con on page 3 col 3 the lehigh freshman base ball club journeyed to prince ton last saturday and received a drubbing from the home team to the score of 16 to 6 prob ably at no time during the re mainder of the season will the plebes meet a harder hitting aggregation than the princeton freshmen starting with stewart's home run in the first inning that scored two of his engineering at the freshman orientation lecture last thurs day professor esty gave a brief scope of what is going on in the electrical field in his talk he told how the principal industries of electrical engin eering are very much subdivid ed into a great many branches and applications and that each one of them was developing so rapidly that it was impossible for them to keep up with the demand several hundreds of high school students were also present at the lecture besides the freshmen engineers the speaker at the outset of his talk gave a definition of electrical engineering he cit ed a number of the fields open to electrical engineers today he tofiched on the matter of electrical communication giv ing among many examples the telegraph the wireless and the radio telephone the man ufacture design construction testing and operation of elec trical machinery were also cited it was stated that in gen eral the field consisted in ev ery transmission of energy and its utilization in form of mo tors and other various appli cations the field is very prog ressive and is growing by leaps and bounds as things are ( dev eloping day by day since 1910 the output of electrical stations has grown six-fold and the to tal output for stations last year is estimated at sixty billion kil owatt-hours the central sta tion industry is way below the saturation point of public de mand and will continue to be so as has been estimated for 1 5 con on page 4 col 6 in a loosely played game the lehigh baseball team mauled the rutgers nine by a 15-5 score dietrich starting his first game for the brown and white was very effective until the final frame when with a fifteen run lead he eased up and the new brunswick team scored five runs the lehigh sluggers pound ed wolff for fourteen singles which came at opportune times these timely bingles coupled with ten errors proved to be the decisive margin in the last three innings the brown and white batsmen scored thir teen of their fifteen runs three bases on balls and an infield error in the fourth in ning was sufficient to score le high's first run in the follow ing frame a run was scored by hayes who singled and then ad vanced on a passed
