by dr j t rothrock the college lecture last friday morning was delivered in the old chapel in packer hall and was the first attempt to use this room in such capacity the speaker was dr j t rothrock who spoke on desolated pennsylvania dr rothrock very ably presented his subject which was based on results of his own experience along the lines of forestry during the last fifty years his remarks were illustrated by lantern slides con trasting past and present conditions due to the wanton waste of timber in this state dr rothrock's first argument in favor of forests was that they regulated the water supply he said that the production of power for mechanical and other purposes is one of the great problems of the age coal will not last forever and most men are now looking to an economical regulated flow of water or the source of supply it is known that of the water which falls upon cleared ground three fifths tlows off and is almost im mediately lost for any power pro duction of that which falls on forest land three fifths is saved that is a saving of 20 per cent in favor of the woodland areas the relation of forests to agri culture is one which is too often overlooked a great river bed may be regarded as a vast evaporating dish sending into the air quantities of aqueous vapor which prevents the escape of the heat of the earth by radiation il the width of the stream is diminished this watery vapor will be diminished by just so much and the effect is readily seen . in the years gone by lumber men cut mile after mile of forest but discarded everything but the best this excessive lumbering of thirty years ago has resulted in exposing our valued hills to des tructive wash from hood pictures of existing conditions in china illustrated the disastrous effect of this resulting erosion on the country dr rothrock said there is only one thing to do if the people of this commonwealth are wise they will take possession by the govern ment of these wasted acres and basket ball very successful dance the annual winter dance of the sophomore cotillion club was held in drown hall on friday evening december 10th and it proved to be orne of the most successful events of this organization in years about seventy people were present including the members of the club a number of upper classmen and alumni and a few invited guests the dance hall was tastefully decorated with college pennants and palms and it presented a very pleasing appearance a programme of twenty-four numbers were danced between the hours of 8.30 and 1.30 o'clock the patronesses mesdames 11 s drinker ethel bert talbot r m gummre j h stewart f p mckibben e b skeer w h chandler eldridge wilbur f m townsend c n wyant w b myers joseph adams e r wilbur jr g b linderman w a wilbur charles dodson h w pfahler a c dodson g r radford g def spiers horace luckenbach arthur west and miss f m gibbon northeastern pennsyl vania lehigh club the annual smoker given by the northeastern pennsylvania lehigh club will be held at ricea's res taurant scranton pa wednesday evening december 15th regular supper will be served at seven o'clock this smoker is an annual event immediately following the lafayette game and is apart from the annual dinner which is always discussed and arranged for at this time the particular subject up for discussion this year will be the athletic policy at present in force at lehigh at a smoker held in scranton on year ago this same sub ject was productive of a thorough discussion and resulted in one of i he best meetings ever held by the club assist track manager at a recent meeting of the track team the following men were nom inated for assistant manager of that team to fill the vacancy caused by r c de nyse : f e galbraith e conover and 1 l becker these men will be voted upon at the next college meeting new jersey club there will be a meeting of the new jersey club for the elect ion of officers after the college meeting on friday in the lecture room in packer hall excellently given and well received in the last two issues of this paper the success of the minstrel show was prophesied ; today's issue records the fulfillment of that prophesy surely the fourteenth performance of this show was the equal and superior to shows given in recent years an appreciative audience applauded every number from the opening chorus until the final curtain was rung down and several times were the encores so numerous that the end men were hardly able to respond the usual custom of the singing of the alma mater by the chorus and audience before the raising of the curtain was observed the raising of the curtain revealed the chorus of thirty men flanked on either side of the interlocutor franklin p lawrence the intro duction of the end men followed the opening chorus and success ively the audience became acquaint ed with colling jones poffenberg er ford downs and kenney the entrance of all being novel and provocative of much laughter from then on followed a rapid fire of jokes between end men and in terlocutor some being of personal nature but ail good the songs and dances as rendered by the end men were excellent jones started this part with i'm going to do what i please " and poffenberger called forth much applause with " cubanola glide the next song by ford you don't know how much you have to know was appreciated equally on account of its rendition and his humorous appearance kenney outdid him self and gave more than was ex pected of him when he sang did he run colling showed himself a good singer with his selection " i'm going to get myself a black salome downs proved as funny as ever in singing " trans mag n if - i-can ban-d.ani-u-ality the last number of the first part was the singing of " he's a college boy " by the entire chorus in the olio four excellent acts were presented the first being an anticipation of the coming battle for the pugilistic championship the principles in this were kowan riley and conway and continued on third page continued on fourth page on saturday the second day of practice for basket ball twenty men reported to dr white head ed by the doctor practice in pass ing the ball dribbling and goal shooting was indulged in after that four teams were picked and a short scrimmage lasting for about ten minutes was given to each team . practices will be held regularly every tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock wednesday afternoon at 2.30 friday afternoon at 5 and saturday afternoon at 2.30 it is to be hoped that a large number in fact all those interested in bask et ball will report as christmas holidays will soon be here and the first game of the season albright is scheduled for january 8 . lehigh has lots of good material from which she ought to be able to pick a team that will establish an enviable record remember the time of practices and let every one do his share toward having a win ing team at lehigh this season .«. . dr j mcd leavitt former president of lehigh died decem ber 12th at annapolis md the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday december 14 1909 college lecture sophomore cotillion no 2 minstrel show vol xvii calendar electrical society — meeting at the home of dr drinker tues day evening december 14th at 8 o'clock mandolin olit b — rehearsal in drown hall wednesday i>e cember 15 at 2.30 o'clock arcadia — meeting in drown hall thursday evening chinese club of l it — meet ing at dr drinker's residence on thursday evening december 16 drown pi all meeting — sun day evening december 19 at 6.30 basket ball practice — in the gy mna sium , t u esday , wed i i esday , friday and saturday afternoons
