arts and science club january meeting by far the most interesting meet ing in the college year of the arts and science club was held in the physical laboratory last thursday evening the subject was phys ics and in accordance with this two fine papers were read and a most interesting and instructive lecture on the gyroscope and gyroscopic motion was delivered by prof franklin of the depart ment of physics the two papers were read by members of the society one on the life of sir issac newton by hardcastle 12 and the other on the continuity of matter by by kaufman 10 both papers were interesting and instructive in his discourse prof franklin took gyroscopic motion explaining in every particluar by means of lantern slides its application to the mono-rail car its use in the prevention of the rolling of ships at sea and its value to automobiles he ended with a practical demons tration of the mono-rail car asa parting injection the club was treated to an excellent repast served in the physical laboratory wrestling team at a recent meeting of the wrest ling team j c gorman was elect ed captain of the team by a unani mous vote the team is practicing faithfully and all the men are in good shape with the exception of cook who is expected to be in good shape again in the near future notice to fencing club handball tournament dr white wishes to announce that no meeting of the fencing class will be held wednesday febru ary 2 owing to the examinations the following is the list of entries for the handball tournament — goeppert baker croll sosnouski bilheimer t m clark address by prof richards good will in business was the theme of prof j w richard's talk before the christian associa tion on sunday evening there is prevalent among business men the idea that the application of principle of personal morality to business tends to detract rather than add to the success of the cor poration the good will of the patrons of the firm appears on the books as an important asset of an organization but in the larger monopolies of the present day the men at the head in their scramble for profits utterly ignore the senti ment of the people little do they appreciate that sympatl senti ment and moral law in business be long there from a mere standpoint of a successful business higher and better principles should regulate a business and rules followed in private life should enter more actively into a public business sentiment is against the man who will exploit the necessities of the people in common this condition exists in many corpora tions but monopolies cannot be prevented and it remains to curb their exploitation of public necessi ties the drift of modern legislation is to make illegal the things which the public regards immoral there fore with the enlightment of public opinion will come a corresponding change in the legislation it is in this work of properly molding pub lic opinion that a heavy responsi bility rests upon those who are de stined to be leaders the pioneers in this movement will be selected from the ranks of the college men of today and this should impress us with the profound necessity of a good moral training mediterreanian trip the lehigh home club will wish dr drinker god-speed on wednesday february 2 at a gathering to be held at the club house on new street the annual smoker of the phila delphia lehigh club will be held on february the 4th fuller announcement concerntng is to be made later junior oratorical contest on account of the examination period the general rehearsal appointed for february 4 must be postponed to friday february 11 at 11.30 in the chapel .«. . c b bishop 10 has left college owing to illness he sailed last week for porto rico basket ball saturday's practice there being no basket ball game here saturday evening the can didates for the team responded for practice in the afternoon and under the direction of dr white the men were put through a lively afternoon's work the usual work in shooting was laid aside and scrimmage was indulged in lawson and bulley choosing sides which lined up as follows :■— merkel for ward lawson throm cook forward hohl price cleson muthart center cox butler guard sindel bulley guard rooney after scrimmage these men were put through signal practice two teams working in this portion of practice lining up practically the same as in scrimmage the next practice will be on wednesday at 3 p m and will be the last until the mid year examinations are over books added to library many students wish to get into touch with that profounder reflec tion upon christ's life and teaching which on the one hand seeks fear lessly the historic truth concerning him and on the other strives to grasp and preserve all that is fun damental to his gospel the fol lowing books recently added to the library should serve as an aid in this endeavor abbot's life and literature of the ancient hebrews menzies history of religion har naek's what is christianity luke the physician and the social gos pel each of these books is writt en by a scholar of standing who at the same time is possessed of great spiritual insight this is particu larly true of harnack who may not unfairly be looked upon as a leader if not the leader of liberal protest ant christianity today two other books should serve the same gener al purpose viz chesterton's heretics and orthodoxy these may bewilder the plodding reader but to the appreciative mind they furnish a blend of humor and pene trating argument which has hardly a parallel in any modern work to the mature thinker eucken's the problem of life gives the jjhiloso phy of the man who perhaps enjoys the widest international reputation as an interpreter of modern life the brown and white lehigh university
