tuesday feb ss e e meeting in physical laboratory at 8 p m wedn esda y feb 9 — basket ball and gym team practice in the gymnasium during the after noon band practice in physical labora tory at 8 p m e m meeting in williams hall at 8 p m thursday fee 10—meeting of men entered in handball tourna ment in the gymnasium during the afternoon saturday feb 12—basket ball game lehigh vs swarthmore in the gymnasium at 8 p m dance in drown hall following the game sunday feb 11—v m c a meeting in drown hall 6.30 p m monday feb 13—brown and white board meeting in drown hall at 1.30 p m «. several notices have recently appeared in philadelphia and other newspapers to the effect that a merger between lehigh university and certain independent medical schools in philadelphia was in con templation jno authoritative state ment has in any way appeared from lehigh university in this matter but it may safely be as sumed that this rumor is only a publication at the present time of plans that have been under consi deration by these medical schools for some years past of improvements in medical education made advisa ble by the action of the american medical association and the gener al sentiment of the profession throughout the country to the effect that some college training should be required prior to the en try of a student into a medical school and the idea of amalgamation of these independent medical schools with some university or collegiate institution in the state of pennsyl vania has naturally to some extent been discussed but the whole matter is as yet inchoate and un defined a large number of students were at the station whe-n dr drinker tefl for new york they gave him a rousing send-off lehigh 33 f & m 16 the third game of the basket ball schedule was played in the gymnasium on saturday night and the home team did not impair the record so well begun as this | game followed so closely after ex amination week its effect did not fail to be apparent for both in team work and in individual play ing the showing was poorer than in the brooklyn game in spite of this lehigh took the lead in scoring at the very start and the visitors could not over come that margin merkel started the scoring by a goal from a foul followed closely by muthart with two goals from the floor a feature of the game was kemp's work for franklin and marshall during the entire game he missed but one or two attempts in scoring from fouls the first half was comparatively slow mut hart obtained several goals from the floor merkel obtained two points by goals from fouls and rebert added two more by a goal from the floor the score at the end of the first half was 16 to 8 in favor of lehigh franklin and marshall started the second half much faster and obtained a goal from the field and another from a foul in quick suc cession muthart then gained two points from fouls at this point lehigh had a number of chances to score but the ball seemingly would not go into the basket two substitutions were made olson and sindel replacing rebert and butler during the last few minutes of this half cook muthart olson and sindel obtained seven goals from the floor the h'nal score was 33 to 16 in lehigh's favor owing to the retirement of a s osbourne from the game merkel acted as captain ' for franklin and marshall smith excelled as eight of the sixteen points were credited to him for lehigh muthart played a very strong game while cook and merkel played their usual strong game summary :—: — lehigh f & m merkel l f kemp rebert .... r f shaub olson watt muthart c smith cook r g werner butler l g leinbach sindel continued on fourth page recent changes in the library the constant addition of books to the library has caused so urgent a need of shelf room that the director of the library has been forced to rearrange the reading room the portraits which formerly hung on the east wall have been removed to a place directly above the desk and the space before occupied by them utilized for shelves these shelves were filled with dictionaries and encyclopedias while general reference books fill the other shelves in the reading room in time the management hopes to so arrange the first floor alcoves that they will contain reference books and for an extension to the present reading room the latest available data places the library among the twenty largest university libraries in the united states to date there are ! 91,800 bound volumes and 37,000 pamphlets registered six hundred bound volumes and several hundred pamphlets were registered during the last term this is a marked advanced over previous years in fact during the past four years more books were registered than during the ten years previous to that time the following gives some idea of the type of references added re cently : an inquiry into socialism kirk up history of trade unionism webb funds and their uses cleveland britan at bay wilkinson the history of the presidency stan wood the grammar of science karl pearson what have greeks done for modern civilzation mahaffy american men of letters series american statesman series the world's great classics railroad freight rates mcpherson evolution of modern capitalism hobson . dawson's works the unearned increment social switzerland protection in germany the german workman continued ofl third page outline of trip dr drinker sailed for europe on saturday last on the steamship grosser kursuerst on one of clark's annual cruises to the mediterranean and the orient before leaving dr drinker got into very close touch with the whole student body by meeting the dormitory men by appointment one evening at the commons at supper and by calling personally on all of the nineteen fraternities he also met the alumni by appointment at various points pittsburg philadelphia and at bethlehem at a reception given by the home club on the evening of the 2nd which was very largely attended by the alumni and by representatives of the teaching force and board of trustees of the university he received on every side kindly words and good wishes toward himself and mrs drinker for a pleasant and restful trip the route of the cruise is very much that described by mark twain in i'lnnocentsi'innocents abroad the vessel is chartered wholly for the trip the first stop is at madeira thence to cadiz thence to seville by rail returning to embark at cadiz the vessel is due at gibralter february 19th where the party will have an opportunity to visit the town and fortress then they go to algiers where they are due february 21st thence to malta february 23rd where the party will spend febru ary 25th and 26th thence to con stantinople where they remain from february 27th to march ist the steamer is next due at smyrna march 2nd where there is an optional side trip to ephesus we understand that dr and mrs drinker propose to take this side trip to see the temple of diana it gives one a curious turn to read in the guide book that after viewing the church of st john and the temple of diana hot lnuch will be included at 11 a m at the sta tion hotel surely a modern in terpolation theuce past the islands of rhodes and cyprus thence to syria arriving at beyrout on march 4th on march sth the pilgrims land at joppa and the programme provides for a stay at jerusalem from march sth to 11th with excursion to bethlehem the j party then leaves on march 11th j for alexandria where they are due continued on fourth page the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday february 8 1910 dr drinker sails basket ball vol xvii calendar no 28
