expected but the papers of the evening were well prepared and mr stillwell is expected to address a later meeting the first article was by g f r bahnson 10 on transformation of electrical energy to light and this topic was entered into very deeply some parts being beyond the grasp of the audience when an incandescent lamp is placed in an electric circuit part of the elec tric energy is transformed into light and part into heat the part that is transformed into light is the useful part and this part is so small that the efficiency of an incandescent lamp is measured in fractions of a per cent while this efficiency may seem small it is greater than either gas or kerosene there are numerous filaments used in incan descent lamps at the present time and each has its merits the popu larity of the tungsten filament over the carbon on account of its higher efficiency is due to the fact that the metal tungsten has a lower boiling point than carbon and naturally is operated at a lower temperature therefore the percentage of useless heat transformation is smaller in the tungsten than in the carbon filament and the tungsten has a higher efficiency the greatest efficiency however is obtained from the electric arc the nernst lamp displays selective radition on the same principle as the welsbach gas mantle the mercury arc is adapted to suburban lightning on account of the pleasing tones it adds to the color of foliage and it is used in shops and mi 11s the calcium light is used for advertising purposes on account of its glare on storage batteries e a warner,'lo
