last practice the team held its last practice for the season of 1909-10 wednes day afternoon in preparation for the cornell game the practice as a whole was satisfactory the passing of the men and the general team work showed slight improve ment over that of the other prac tices the scrimmage was brisk leaving little doubt in the minds of those who saw it that a team full of life and vim will represent le high friday evening in fact the team seems to have entirely re covered from the much talked of slump of a few weeks passed cornell comes with a good record having won from several large col leges lehigh enters the game with a record of five victorys and two defeats but with a team determined to its best hence a good game may be expected the line up of the scrimmage was as follows —■regulars scrubs merke1 forward hohl lawson forward mccoy muthart center waltz butler guard cole cook guard peters track notice captain eiley has issued the first call for track candidtaestoreport at the gymnasium saturday afternoon prospects for a winning team this spring are good the material in the freshman class will be a great addition to the number of regular men from reports it is probable that thirty men will answer this first call and before the season advances very far several college records are expected to be broken bowling wednesday the initial practice of the base ball team was held on wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the cage a large number of candidates were out and a lively practice principal ly batting and fielding was carried on under the direction of coach dickson among those out were captain anderson eose king wolfram martin walters heard williams liardcastle shafer hellen borden young drant sahlin carpenter eberly wright watson bowen and dugan hereafter practice will be held every tuesday wednesday friday and saturday afternoon a defi nite schedule will be arranged with the lacrosse management relative to the use of the cage wednesday and saturday afternoons this will be published in a later issue lacrosse the first lacrosse practice of the season was held wednesday after noon in the cage it consisted of tipping and light work and lasted about an hour more than thirty men reported and others are ex pected later the members of last year's team who were out are os bourne gorman swope rowan shaffner ewing niesen and mccoy this leaves several positions with out varsity men captain os bourne anticipates little difficulty in filling these as he has a wealth of material from which to draw beginning with march 17 coach crowell will work with the team regularly every tuesday wednes day friday and saturday in the meantime practice will be held in the cage monday wednesday thursday and saturday . the exact hours will be printed later bishop cage t edgar shields was director of a concert given complimentary to the educators of the bethlehems thursday evening in the moravian seminary chapel the el mets were scheduled to bowl the mechanicals wednesday afternoon but at a late hour became indisposed the tournament was therefore postponed indefinitely the mechanicals again issue their challenge to meet any course class or picked team in the university they also offer to bowl any two man team *$, ,, —_ a machine has been placed in the pool room for keeping check on the time of men using the pool and billiard tables the sunday evening meeting in drown hall will be addressed by bishop c l moench of the govern ing board of the moravian church he is a man of very pleasing personality and of powerful address and well deserves a large audience a stimulating talk and an interest ing meeting are assured r k stritzinger ex-'lo spent sunday in town c e society march meeting the march meeting was held in j saucon hall last wednesday even | ing a large attendance and ex i cellent papers followed by an enter tainment in the form of music helped to make it the best meeting of this year the first paper was | \ a ilia kail road's third rail sys tem this is a line from phila delphia to atlantic city which was formerly a one track steam road with the installation of electric power two and in some places three tracks were put in mr poole explained in detail the rolling stock and power houses the safety di vices used and the method of operating the trains inasmuch as advice coming from successful engineers and men who are doing things is always acceptable mr ueorge j ray the second speaker of the evening was welcomed by all and his talk greatly appreciated mr ray is chief engineer of the di l & w railroad one of the wealthiest and best operated roads in xlmerica and which during the last few years has been spending vast amounts on construction and equipment mr ray described briefly the features of the new cut off from hopatcong ist j to portland penna this cut will reduce the mileage nine miles between these points he also made a few general remarks about the locomotive shops being built at seranton pa before reading his paper the latter dis cussed the nature and description of the work a young engineer is likely to encounter as a railroad employee mr ray regreted the fact that lack of influence on so called pull sometimes retards a man's progress however this difficulty cannot keep a man from rising if he sticks to his work and is punctual accurate willing to work hard and work overtime if necessary . in nine cases out of ten the men who receive promotion through pull " and not because of actual ability eventually fail for hard work varied experience and gen eral training there is no
