athletic notes calendar tuesday march 15 sopho more banquet at the new merchants hotel at 8.30 p m wednesday march 16-—base ball practice in the age 2 to 3.30 p m lacrosse practice in the cage 8.80 to 5 p m track men report at the gym at 2.80 p m mustard and cheese practice in saucon hall at 2.30 p m miners meeting in williams hall at 11.30 a m ' thursday march 17 la crosse practice in the cage chemical society meets in saucon hall at 7.45 p m arts and science meeting in theta delta chi house 601 dela ware avenue at 7.30 p m friday maroii is—base ball practice in the cage college meeting in packer hall at 7.30 a m saturday march 19 base ball practice in the cage 8.30 to 5 p m lacrosse practice in the cage 2 to 3.30 p m track men report at gym at 2.30 p m chicago alumni dinner chicago 111 l contest in the gymnasium at 8 p m orchestra dance in drown hail at 8 p m sunday march 20—v m c a j meeting at 6.30 p m the lacrosse schedule for the coming season is not yet complete however the first two games are as follows saturday april 9 indians at carlisle and saturday april 16 columbia at home the schedule will be published in full in one of next week's issues another game has been added to the base ball schedule it is with tufts college and will be played at home friday april 22nd at 4 p m ralph g caldwell has been se cured as assistant base ball coach for the coining season mr cald well is an old u of p pitcher who broke into the professional world several years ago daring his professional career he pitched for toronto and the philadelphia national league teams he also captained and managed a team in north carolina president hart of the sopho more class has appointed the following calculus cremation com mittee shurts j t martin e b williams wright baird and person chairman 1911 epitome the epitome will be put on sale on monday march 21st in drown hall a limited number of copies will be available and all those who wish to take the book home with them before easter are requested to come early those who have not returned subscription cards must do so before friday so that the business manager can know how many books to place on sale the freshman banquet will be held april 7 at the hotel wyan dotte tickets are 2.50 and may be obtained from the committee putnam drant cosgrove croft lamb or moore held at merchants hotel the annual banquet of the junior class was held last thurs day evening at the new merchants hotel a large number were present together with the following guests anderson mo a s os bourne'lo and h m riley 10 a very excellent menu was served and despite present local incon veniences an enjoyable evening was had by all who attended g e wood president of the \ class acted as toastmaster and j introduced a good list of speakers ! the first of these was w f bavin | gartner who responded to the class and ably presented that subject with some allusions to next year's foot ball team under the head of athletics three men spoke a g black on foot ball f s borden on base ball and w s herrmann on track all three men spoke well and related some amusing anecdotes the ladies was taken care of by s d gladding and his response showed he was qualified for his subject as a prophet j h dillon proved a success in declaiming on the future temperance was pre sented by e f crump who of course was very able c f lin coln won much applause on his dissertation the faculty a wells completed the list of formal talks and cleared up much mystery j about the pfyunph with the completion of the regu lar list of speakers each of the guests in turn were called on to speak on their respective sports and other members of the class added their share to the enjoyment as they were called upon the evening came to a conclusion with the singing of the alma mater the committee responsible for the success of the banquet were j m bley f f trotter t c kraemer c s albright j e dawson f s borden and e f crump ..» a quartet composed of henley miles smyth and terwilliger is practicing songs for # the sophomore banquet judging from their nature it will be worth the price of admis sion to hear them js saeger,'l2 painfully twisted his ankle while pole vaulting saturday mustard and cheese president pott's talk dr f l pott president of st john's university shanghai china addressed the drown hall meeting sunday evening he mentioned the different signs of china's growth the increase in railways the natural light against the use of opium as demoralizing to her people and the educational re form he laid most emphasis up on the educational side because that is the work in which he is en gaged and because it is china's greatest need at the present time education is freeing the chinese mind from its ancient prejudices and mistakes and is moulding the comijag empire the abolishment of the old system of education is placing the responsibility upon the younger chinese students who are learning from the west st john's is a university of three depart ments classical medical and theological and has an enrollment of 350 students with a faculty of eighteen members it was the first school to introduce athletics into chinese education at present there are intercollegiate games held each year and many of the records made compare favorably with ours dr pott emphasized the tremen dous opportunities of a christian teacher in china especially along the scientific lines he urged that men from lehigh consider the call and the need for western teachers in the great empire the regular rehearsals for the mustard and cheese were held last week the chorus is drilling on a number of dances and songs the cast has made good headway hav ing already committed the first act the music will be one of the features of the show this year it will be entirely new to these parts and will be composed to a large ex tent of songs written by students in the university notices of the practices will be posted on the bulletin board in packer hall the flannery lacrosse sticks have arrived and are now on sale at the gym c h poole 10 spent a pleasant week's end at ambler pa the brown and white tv tt t rf i "™^ t v tt'rttttt~*t»ir^t'tnt pjivrrsip junior banquet south bethlehem pa tuesday makch 15 1010 vol xvii gym meet y m c a u of p 43 lehigh 11 in a somewhat onesided contest held in the gymnasium saturday night the pennsylvania team de feated the home contingent from the very start the superi ority of the visitors was never in doubt but in spite of this our men made an uphill fight of.it through out the best they could do how ever was to score two second places which added to five thirds totaled up to eleven points in the mean time pennsylvania had rolled up a score of 43 on one or two oecassions rather poor head work was shown by members of the home team this in part may explain the poor show ing for pennsylvania kelley was the star performer the clean cut na ture of his work not only stamped him as the best gymnast on the floor but also drew round after round of applause kelley won his letter some time ago by taking first place in the intercollegiates it is interesting to note that columbia scored only six points against the 11 of p team no 38
