ing on wednesday evening at the lehigh home club various mat ters of importance were discussed by the club after which the follow ing nominees for next years officers president clayton bilheimer m 0 vice president royce king 12 howard desh ex-'o9 secre tary james solomon 11 stanley solt 10 treasurer ralph kemp smith 11 warren seyfried,'l2 executive committee member at large robert more lo solt 10 solomon ll and seyfried 12 will comprise the committee to arrange for the next meeting which will be held on wednesday april 13th the committee provided sumptuous refreshments prof peck talks the regular march meeting of the mining society was held on wednesday evening in the geology lecture room in williams hall in stead of in the organization's rooms among the business matters con sidered the most important was the formation and support of a junior association of mining engineers which the american institute of mining engineers hopes to make possible treat the chairman of the committee which has investigated the matter was instructed to send a reply to the society promising the support of the undergraduates of lehigh the first number on the program was a talk by prof daniels of the mining department on the points of interest at the cornwall mines and the pennsylvania steel coin pany's plant at lebanon a fair idea of the size of the deposit at cornwall may be obtained from the fact that already about 21,000,000 tons of ore have been taken from the mines and the indications are that there is an equal amount re maining intact at the present rate of mining about 1,000,000 tons per year are being removed the geology of the region was described and illustrated by means of sketches in the explanation of the methods of mining the recent changes brought about by the installation of an up-to-date hoist and crushing plant were given particular attention the ore is mined by means of great steam shovels conveyed to large crushers whence it goes through a series of roils and screens finally being de posited into large stock bins where it is held awaiting shipment this improved process mixes the differ ent grades of ore thoroughly en ables uniform ore to be sent to the consumer increases the rase of production and reduces the cost of mining the power of the operation of this plant is furnished by three one thousand horse power gas engines located at lebanon the engines using coke oven gas this machinery was tested a few weeks ago and it is of interest to recall that five of the senior mechanicals assisted in the work the essential features of the con continued on second page held at merchants hotel the class of 1912 held its annual banquet at the new merchants ho tel tuesday evening about seventy five attended and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves to say the banquet was a suc cess would be bromidic but as that is the only way to express the feel ings of all it is necessary to use that term the committee in charge deserves a great deal of praise for the dinner they presented after every body had been su j fficiently supplied with eats jack hart president of the class introduced the first speaker of the evening otto who spoke on 1912 shurts speaking on the freshmen was the next on the list ebe cook told some of his college experiences both of a serious and comic nature coakley l then followed with a dissertation on the dutch ranch at this point hart told a few funny stories after which he intro duced with some well chosen re marks jeff saeger who spoke on ' our sweethearts runt reb ert followed and gave some inside information on the grinds our athletes was ably presented by kennedy and hardcastle wound up the speaking by giving a short talk on environments after the speaking a quartet composed of henley smyth miles and terwilliger rendered a few choice selections treat 10 then spoke a few words riley mo followed with a few remarks con cerning the present condition of track affairs anderson mo then spoke about base-ball and os bourne 10 told about lacrosse conditions wood president of the junior class was the last speaker of the evening and spoke at some length on the relations existing be tween the junior and sophomore classes the quartet then led in singing i the alma mater after which the j banquet broke up with the class yell ,». with monday's issue the senior members of the brown and white board end their duties and the junior members will take charge the board elections will be held next monday athletics wednesday practices base ball practice a large number of men reported for the regular held in the cage on saturday at 3.30 p m lacrosse practice quite a number of men turned out for the regular lacrosse practice which was held in the cage at 3.30 o'clock on wednesday afternoon the practice lasted about an hour and consisted principally of tipping and passing from the form which the new material is showing and from the^way the old men are getting back into shape it is evident
