philosophy night the regular monthly meeting of the arts and science club was held at the theta delta chi house on thursday evening march 17 the subject for the evening was psychology and philosophy and in presenting these several good papers were read by members of the club j o knauss 10 read an in teresting account on the advance ment of the theory of evolution tracing it from its early beginning to the nowgreat accepted hypothesis of darwin e b more presented as his subject lucretius reviewing at length the life of the man and criticising those portions of his works which describe his philoso phy following the papers pro fessors hughes palmer and blake and also mr gilmore of the biology department indulged in a spirited discussion the meeting adjourned to enjoy the refreshments served by the hosts miners trip college meeting track coach recommended a college meeting was held last friday in packer hall after thrashing out the question of awarding a basket ball l it was finally decided to recommend the athletic committee to award the usual monogram to all varsity players but to award the insignia l u b b t to all players who play in at least one full half during the season treat 10 kenney 10 and eiiley 10 then called attention to the misuse of doctors certificates denouncing in strong terms those guilty of this practice manager lawrence 10 of the track team spoke briefly about the need of a track coach eiley 10 and van blarcom 10 seconded his remarks with the result that the student body unanimously recom mended the athletic committee to secure the services of a track coach lowry 11 gave a short sketch of the epitome with almost two hundred new cuts and two hundred pages of reading matter the book is expected to make a hit it is on sale at the supply bureau and can be purchased before going home easter following the adjournment the senior class and maryland club held short meetings b p s alumni banquet tuesday march 22 tau beta pi banquet at new merchants house at 8 p m wednesday march 23 easter holidays begin at 12.30 p m tuesday march 29 — easter holidays end at 7.45 a m le h i g h uni v e rs i t y enrollment the university register for 1909 1910 shows an attendance at lehigh university this collegiate year of 708 students from 30 different states and ten foreign countries 425 stu dents are from pennsylvania 68 from new jersey 55 from new york 48 from maryland 16 from the dis trict of columbia 10 from massachu setts 9 from virginia 7 each from mexico and china 6 each from con necticut and north carolina 4 from ohio 3 each from rhode island michigan texas utah cuba and porto rico 2 each from delaware west virginia alabama wiscon sin minnesota new mexico and colorado 1 each from maine kentucky mississippi indiana illinois lowa missouri montana california canada honduras ecuador brazil belgium and india the students are divided by classes as follows graduates 38 seniors 154 juniors 144 sopho mores 160 freshmen 179 special students 9 summer school stu dents 24 38 are in the depart ment of arts & science 187 in civil engineering 137 in mechanical engineering 127 in mining engi neering 13 in metallurgical engi neering 21 in electrometallurgy 133 in electrical engineering 27 in chemistry and 25 in chemical engineering l contest biey wins the annual l contest of the gymnasium team was held saturday evening in the gym bley 11 won with 111 points against 93 by jannus who was second johnson was third and bo wen fourth bailey also took part but not as a contestant he having won his letter last year bley won every event he entered while jannus was a close second the results of the different events are as follows — horizontal bar — bley 35 ; johnson 27 jannus 26j side horse—beitzel 32 sturges 29 johnson 14 clubs—bley 30 parallel bars bley 27 bowen 23 jannus 22 bailey johnson 18 rings jannus 32 johnson 26 bowen is tumbling—bailey bley 18j ; jannus 12 base ball the baseball squad held out door practice for the first time this season on saturday thirty or more men were out and were put through a sharp fielding and batt ing practice by coaches dickson and caldwell considerable dirt has been washed down upon the diamond during the winter and this must be removed before any good infield practice will be pos sible if the weather remains favor able outfield and infield squads will be set at work on monday or tuesday of next week track about twenty men were at work on saturday afternoon and were divided into four squads captain eiley took charge of the high jumpers w p eoberts of the pole-vaulters dr avhite of the weight men while van blarcom looked after the runners basket ball lacrosse saturday afternoon the lacrosse candidates held the first real prac tice of the season it was on the field thirty nine men reported coach crowell gave the squad a brief outline of the season's work he then divided the candidates into three groups and instructed each group in tipping and running with the ball he emphasized the fact that all men out for the team are expected to keep in strict training andy farabaugh 04 was out saturday with a lacrosse stick friday noon a party composed of the senior miners and junior metallurgists left for the mines of the new jersey zinc co the party was conducted first through the crushing and concentrating plant where the raw ore from the mines is separated from the gangue and prepared for the smelter satur day morning was spent in studying the geology in the immediate vicin ity and in inspecting the mines this proved particularly interest ing since the company has recently installed a system of electric haul age and a new four compartment hoisting incline the early afternoon was spent at the old marshall mine at sterling hill although there are yet large amounts of ore at this mine it has heen abandoned and the open cut workings are all that can be seen professors miller eckfeldt daniels and ingalsbee accompanied the party «. at a short meeting of the senior class the class day committee was appointed f p lawrence it p smith hess hall van blarcom w e sturges and lawson chair man . w l merkel was elected captain of the basket ball team for the season ll>lo-1911 the follow ing men were nominated for assist ant manager j e oulliney l2 w j maguire 12 e e yake 12 the annual banquet given by the faculty and trustees of the beth lehem preparatory school will take place on saturday april ninth at nine p m at the sun inn owing to the fact that so many of the invitations mailed are re turned to the school office showing that the correct addresses of many of the alumni are not known to the school the authorities desire to state that all alumni are invited and will be welcomed whether invi tations reach them or not the tickets will be handed out on the evening of the banquet by mr smith but the school does want to know very particularly who are coming in order that arrangements may be made for the right number if alumni have not received invitations the school will appreciate it if they send the acceptance on an ordinary postal card or telephone it the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday march 22 1910 vol xvii calendar arts and science club no 40
