the management of the base ball team announces that there will be a game with either lebanon val ley or albright on lehigh field next friday at 2.30 p m continued on third page failure to hit ball and loose fielding responsible the varsity met tufts college on lehigh field in a nine inning contest on friday afternoon and for six innings held them down to a tie score at the opening of the game it appeared as if the visitors were go ing to run away with our team roberts reached first on an error and was advanced by dickinson's infield hit captain dustin sacri ficed and by fast work roberts was caught in an attempt to reach third wolfram robbed tufts of their chances to score by retiring the side on strike-outs in the second inning both teams settled down hall and kuighl struck out mckenna drew a pa>s to first and king displayed the strength of his right wing by nail ling mckenna in his attempt to pilfer second king and wolfram struck out and captain dastin's stop of sahlin's hot grounder re tired the side tufts scored their first run in the third inning on an error by croll and a hit to right field by dustin lehigh's side was retired without having a man touch first in the next inning tufts again came dangerously close to scoring hall was given a base on balls knight beat out a grounder and by fast work hail was caught at third after the failure to put out the man at first wolfram again came to the rescue by retiring the side on strike outs borden re ceived a pass to first and was ad vanced by fisher's sacrifice how ever our hopes for scoring were crushed by atwood who struck out the next two men it was not until the fifth inning that lehigh was able to send a man across the rubber wolfram was allowed to walk sahlin's bunt was quickly fielded and afforded tufts an excellent chance for a double play which failed rebert ran for wolfram and in an attempt to put him out at second the ball was dropped and he reached third where an unsucessful attempt was made to nab him and he crossed the plate in safety sahlin was advanced to third by richard's sacrifice with no one out and a lacrosse team taken into camp navy wins from lehigh by score of 4-2 in a splendidly contested game lehigh's lacrosse team went down to defeat at the hands of the mid shipmen at annapolis last satur day by the score of 4-2 the game was played with spirit and cleverness and there was little to choose between the work of the two teams the midshipmen attack was a little faster than ours but the lehigh players as a rule passed more accurately and took the ball more cleanly which afforded them a number of chances to make quick shots for goal at the end of the first half navy was ahead having scored three goals to lehigh's one in the second half each side could score but once leaving honors even for that period bran ham scored the first goal shooting it into the net after the ball had been in the neighborhood of lehigh's goal for some time a few minutes later williams evened things up by running the ball out from behind navy's goal and cleverly throwing it backwards through the posts ford scored the next one after running down the field having secured the ball on a very accurate pass just before time was called young netted the ball for navy's third the second half was a fine exhibi tion of'lacrosse both teams strongly contesting every point and it was not until after ten minutes had passed that hill scored the first goal for navy in another five rowan slammed the ball through for the final score of the game on account of the recent rains the grounds were drinker tennis team wins first match no 17 varsity nine loses to tufts lafayette easily defeated very capable players on team playing their first match of the season the tennis team on saturday afternoon met and defeated on our courts the team from lafayette by the score of 4-1 two of our points were made when we won two out of the three single matches played the other two points were made in doubles owing to the absence of dunning hardcastle played singles winning from warren by the score of 7-5 6-2 cooper also won his singles defeating styre the scores being 6-1 6-1 schwalzwaelder lost to murphy by 2-6 3-6 in the doubles koch and hard castle although it was the first time they had ever played together had no difficulty in disposing of their opponents their scores were 6-3 4-6 and 6-2 summary — cooper lehigh defeated styre lafay ette 6-i , 6-i hardcastle lehigh defeated warren lafayette 7-5 6-2 schwalzwaelder lehigh lost to mur phy lafayette 2-6 3-6 hardcastle and koch lehigh defeated murphy and lusk lafayette 6-3 4-6 6-2 l eh ig fi llniv ers i t v , april 26th to the student body home again — and i assure you that it is a great delight to us to reach home mrs drinker and i heartily appreciated the cordial greeting you gave us yesterday as we alighted from the train — it | was a great delight to see you all ! we have journeyed to many lands — but as our train rolled up from new york — and we felt the blessed sense of being in our own dear country once more and looked out ! on the green fields — we said that in all our wanderings we had seen no country so beautiful — so attrac tive to the eye — and surely we had seen none where the people had such cause to be thankful for the blessings of freedom and peace we thank you from our hearts for your welcome and we both come home with joy to take up the work we share with you — and with j all lehigh men — of advancing ' worthily the name and reputation of our university whatever de gree of success may be in store for i lehigh — let us never be content — while w r e live — with any measure of prosperity that may come to her but ever realize that her power for still greater good in the world increases with advancement — and that e a c h step u p w a r d only opens to our view the greater work she may accom plish — always however keeping before us the thought that progress to be most effective must be logical well-fo inded — and steady — not spasmodic or emotional -- our efforts trustees faculty — alum ni — and you coining alumni — should be unitedly and carefully directed to development on lines in which our university can do her work to the best advantage — remembering that our success in the past has largely come from concentrated well-directed effort in a limited sphere — and that in our future further development we should always first have on our minds the perfecting of that which we have already begun — before entering new fields ; that we enter new fields only when it is clearly apparent that the necessity exists for such step and that we are in a position to undertake such new responsibilities and adequate ly and thoroughly to meet them iikaky sturgis drinker popo caterpillar vii to be well staged with only a few days remaining before the play the following state ment has been given out : the cast is as near perfect as it is possible for an amateur cast to be the chorus is 1 tie best ever seen in a lehigh show and the songs and dances are sure to make a big hit the original music by williams 10 and colling 12 is decidedly good and without exaggerating it may be said that king popocater pillar vii is the best show ever put on at lehigh come and see it judge for yourself the sale of seats opens next thursday april 28 base ball on friday
