board of control awards letters and numerals board also grants permis sion to raise athletic fee to 15 per annum long meeting the 1926 baseball season of the brown and white diamond artists did not start off in a very auspicious manner on the trip through dixie which took place during the easter holi days and the beginning of this week of the five games sched uled only three were able to be staged because of jupe pluvius's interference with the other two the opener was to be with tom keady's quantico marines last wednesday on the latter's dia mond but bucketsful of rain prevented this contest so it was princeton that inflicted the first damage to the lehigh tos sers with a 1 0 to 4 score in a game played on friday after noon on georgetown's field the next afternoon found the team at high point north carolina place where the many lehigh alumni in northern new jer sey would have an opportunity to see the show clyde davis the traveling manager of the club has turned over all details to a committee in newark composed of several prominent lehigh alumni who guarantee the success of the venture from a financial stand point and who are doing all in their power to inform interest ed parties in that section kurt thum has taken charge of the sale of newark tickets here to students who may wish to pro cure them for their friends who are in or near that vicin ity con on page 6 col 1 ) the sale of tickets for newark performance will be new developments are con stantly being made in the plans for the mustard and cheese club musical comedy coil egypt which is soon to be opened at liberty high school the opening date is april 16 and despite the work that has been done to date the members of both cast and chorus are spending every moment of their spare time to insure the suc cess of the production the latest development that has been made is the comple tion of the arrangements to have a performance given in newark it was first thought that the demand for tickets would warrant a performance in new york city but upon in vestigation and consideration newark was chosen as a central con on page 2 col 3 with the university of north carolina furnishing the opposi tion after a hectic struggle the home team triumphed with an 11-10 score after a rest on sunday the brown and white nine crossed bats with the uni versity of virginia nine at char lottesville and lost a close one to the southerners by a 4-2 tal ly the game scheduled for tuesday with the university of richmond was made impossible by a snowstorm all of the teams encountered were of high calibre and all had seen more or less action previous to their setto with the south mountain batters so the string of defeats should not be taken too serious ly society celebrates bacon anniversary lacrosse season opens tomorrow civils discuss brick pavements burr competitions to be continued robert blake society to dedicate meeting to bacon lehigh faces strong prince ton team in first meet of the year betterment in the playing of the team because they realize that coach johnson is working with practically an entirely green team in addition to in stituting his own ideas in coach ing so far no word ball clubs that merit the respect of all colle giate contenders con on page 6 col 7 at a meeting held last mon day evening the tau beta pi honorary engineering fraternity which was founded at lehigh by dr williams in 1885 elect ed twelve undergraduates to membership the men chosen were pledged yesterday fore noon just before the college lec ture membership in tau beta pi is the most coveted honor which can be conferred upon an un dergraduate engineer particul arly in view of the fact that lehigh is the mother chapter of this fraternity which is now established in forty-six insti tutions high scholarship per sonality and campus activity are the the primary considerations upon which membership is based the men who have met these requirements and were pledged yesterday include one senior d m mong e e who was recently elected to membership in phi beta kappa honorary arts and science fraternity and eleven juniors these men represent four of the colleges in engineering the civil en gineering discussions on schol arships a new system of elect ting assistant managers and the plan for the outside use of the bethlehem steel field now the property of lehigh university kept the board of athletic con trol at lehigh university busy up to a late hour on monday night march 29 the report of the steel field committee was approved and will be submitted to the board of trustees for its approval the right to raise the student athletic fee from 1 0 to 1 5 was also approved and will likewise have to be ap proved by the trustees before it can go into effect it is plan ned to have it include a cheer ing section seat for the lafay ette game of the routine business the most important was awarding of the letters in various sports the large l was awarded in the varsity sports and the small l in minor varsity ath letics and to frosh managers and numerals to frosh athletes con on page 5 col 7 in swimming charles leader was awarded a large l by virtue of establishing a new record for the breast stroke event in the eastern collegiate swim league the board also approved sending leader and hobbs dives champion of the eastern swim league to the national collegiate champion ships at annapolis this last week-end wendell begins spring practice the burr staff held a special meeting last wednesday eve ning in drown hall to take up the matter of elections for next year's staff but after consider able discussion it was decided that this matter of business would be postponed until a lat er date professor drown opened the meeting with quite a lengthy talk on the financial status of the burr and also touched on the editorial standards his remarks were quite pertinent and brought up the plan to withhold the election of officers until suitable proof was offered to warrant the election of men to the various important posi tions on the staff dean mcconn then gave a very pointed talk to the board partly in criticism of a recent number and partly in commen dation of the responsibility ac cepted by those who were left in sole charge of managing the board after the withdrawal of h a myers and j j unkles from college con on page 6 col 6 c e nicholas as chairman of the committee on the revision of the constitution then read an amendment for consideration of the staff relating to the posi tion of officers on the board and the sanctioning of the position of chairman following this re port discussion was held on the practicability of retaining a chairman and a motion was today marks the tercentenary of the death of francis bacon the brightest and wisest man in the history of the english race in honor of this event the rob ert blake society is devoting its entire meeting tonight in memory of this distinguished scholar the keynote of the program will be an address by professor curtis embracing the following points : on easter sunday morning 1626 francis bacon the brigh test wisest largest mind that the english speaking race or any race has ever known stadium the impending struggle is the initial one for the lehigh team it marks the introduction of an other sport between the two un iversities the orange and black will go into the fray with the exper ience gained from their tussle with the lacrossers of mt washington last saturday at baltimore although beaten by a score of 13-4 the princeton ians exhibited enough skill and form to warrant a fast work ing combination their defeat was almost expected for their opponents are the acme of the lacrosse world the mt wash ington team is composed of for mer collegiate stars who per form with uncanny speed and teamwork the best balanced squad that has represented lehigh in many years will wear the brown and white togs tomorrow several weeks of intensive and gruell ing practices have put the men into the proverbial pink in ad dition to developing a lightning like attack with an impregnable defense to withstand the as saults of their adversaries it is the determined plan of coach o'neill to send out his fleetest and strongest machine with a nucleus of seven var sity men from last year the squad has been augmented by enough new candidates to in sure the highest efficiency of the team con on page 6 col 4 it is not known as yet wheth er schwimmer will be at goalie tomorrow due to the weakness sustained by a recent operation a very interesting lecture was given for the benefit of the c e students on wednesday april 1 , at 1 1 a m in the phy sics lecture room the lectur er mr perkins is the chief engineer of the eastern pav ing brick manufacturing asso ciation mr perkins who is a graduate of lehigh in the class of 90 gave a very concise talk on the essentials of brick pave ments supplemented with mo tion pictures showing the man ufacture of paving bricks and some examples of brick pave ment construction the essentials of mr perkins talk were as follows the dura bility of brick pavements is de pendent on three things good design good materials and good construction there are two general types of brick pave ments : the rigid type construct ed with grout filled joints and the flexible type constructed with asphalt or sand filled joints the rigid or monolithic type of brick pavement was very popular at one time but of later years the more flexible as phalt filled pavements are more generally used this is because of the tendency of their rig id pavement to shatter under heavy traffic there are two principal parts to a brick pavement the foun dation and the wearing surface the sub-grade is an essential part of the foundation and it is important that this be properly drained the foundation itself may be of any solid material but concrete is the most desir able the wearing surface consists of the brick surface and the bin der there were among the can didates and it is expected that they will form the nucleus for this year's eleven the line po sitions especially are being sought for by men who saw service in the games of last sea son with the exception of an end and a tackle position this department will probably be taken care of by experienced the bach choir expects at the festival on friday and sat urday may 14th and 15th to reach the climax of all its per formances the 300 members of the choir have been carefully selected as to their ability to sing more over dr j fred wolle the leader of the choir has spared no pains in
