pocono conference from june 10-19 at pocono pines pa will beh eld the student con ference for the middle atlantic states its purpose is to gather to gether several hundred college men at the close of the college year for religious meetings and discus sions wholesome companionship and for the all-round development of men's faculties it strives to send the men away with a large vision of what they can do in the line of service in the world and to give them the fnndmental truths about god and our relation to him the morning of each day is given over to meetings the afternoons entirely to sports it is hoped that lehigh men can take several bungalows at this conference and perhaps cook their own meals thus cutting down expenses among the speakers at the conference are — bishop talbot prof e a steiner author of on the trail of the immigrant etc g w pepper of phila prof jeules of cornell h e fosdick of montclair and dr g r grose of baltimore further information about the conference may be obtained at the y r . m c a office in drown hall all students are invited to attend .*. , harvard was founded in 1638 yale in 1701 pennsylvania in 1740 princeton in 1746 columbia in 1754 and michigan in 1837 these are generally considered the oldest universities in the uni versities in the united states and i they seem pretty old until we com pare them with some of the insti tutions abroad then we get some thing really aged the current number of the american education al review contains some interesting statements concerning the age of the universities in the old world and the number of students in at tendance a comparison in respect to enrollment is no more favorable to our institutions than a compari son of age most interesting and successful gathering of c e society the most successful spiel in the history of the civil engineering society was held ou wednesday evening in the commons over ninety men were present and all partook of the dainty refreshments provided by steward mathews the program provided was the best that has ever been arranged prof wilson headed the list of speakers and gave a very interest ing talk on " reminiscences " in which he dwelt on lehigh in 1884 the next number proved a winner in the shape of music by the c e octette jannus 11 president elect in well chosen words spoke on the society j c rogers 10 followed with the next speech and had for his subject the hoboe in which he told of his tramping experiences of last sum mer the octette once more obliged with music after which prof landis spoke his topic was deutsche studenten on which he dwelt at some length and with an interest that held all prof landis went into details of german university life a thing far different from that found in america with the form in the latter place the society was honored by the presence of mr john fritz and dr drinker prof mckibben who is advisor to the society spoke on the society in general mr fritz spoke on his ideal college man and his ideas were most ably seconded by dr drinker the prize offered for the best poster of the year was awarded to le van 10 last y m c a meeting thomas j farmer whose visit to lehigh last fall with mr e o mercer will be well remembered will speak at the last y m c a meeting of the year in drown hall next sunday at 6.30 joseph e dawson 1911 has been chosen as captain of next year's track team dawson has been on the team for the last three years and has won many points for the brown and while beyond any doubt he is the best fitted man for the position he will occupy and will work hard to gain the place for the team that it deserves among lehigh's teams at a meeting of the track team on tuesday when the elections were held the members of the team passed a unanimous vote of thanks to a j standing 10 who has so generously been giving his time to coach the track men during the spring too much credit cannot be given this man who has worked so constant ly for the up building of our track team — . .». . an important meeting of the sophomore cotillion club will be held at the delta tau delta house sunday morning h h stock 87 professor of mining engineering at the uni versity of illiuois has been ap pointed by the governor of illinois a member of a commission to estab lish three mine rescue stations in illinois for which the legislature of that state recently appropriated the sum of 75,000 closely contested track meet ends with score 52-52 with the score a tie at 52-52 and with lehigh's prospects for winning the deciding event the discus throw more than bright an un usual downpour of rain broke up | wednesday's meet with swarth i more the garnet team started out with a rush and in the first five events captured 20 points to lehigh's 14 after that however the home team began to pile up points and just before the rain interfered had managed to tie the score the points were pretty evenly divided between the mem bers of the opposing teams no man making more than ten college nine and was in very good trim but one run had been scored in the three rounds lehigh start ed off in a strong position getting several men on base in the first in ning but mishaps allowed chance for a score to evaporate in the third inning however olson se cured a free pass and took third on a sacrifice hit from where he scored on a hit by borden the army scored their run in the second in ning on a base on balls a wild pitch and a hit lacrosse captain chosen r s dunn 1912 has been elect ed captain of next year's lacrosse team throughout the past season dunn's work has been one of the features of the team's play and his choice as leader of next year's team will meet with the hearty approval of all the following sophomores were nominated for the position of assis tant manager of the lacrosse team t p harris a g martin and m i terwilliger track captain elected no 57
