in spite of the warm weather forty-three men comprised the foot ball squad wednesday afternoon this was especially encouraging since the men were all willing to work despite the heat as usual the preliminary work consisted of drop kicking and punting at the same time affording the men the opportunity to practice in handling the oval captain speirs and c aman spend considerable time in kicking goals from placement the varsity was then lined up against the scrubs ends and backs on both sides being shifted at vari ous times to acquaint the men with breaking through the line in order to block kicks and to get down under punts coach dickson final ly divided the squad into three teams and put each through light signal practice in this work he was assisted by captain speirs and assistant coach strauss since the weather was too warm the expected scrimmage was dispensed with brumbaugh was not out in foot ball togs owing to a slight injury to his knee caused by slipping on the stairs on tuesday evening after practice a picture of the entire squad was taken by mccaa rush while the sophomores were hold ing their class meeting in saucon hall on wednesday at 12 o'clock a large number of freshmen as sembled in the physical laboratory with a determination perhaps of not being outdone by their rivals a large crowd of upper classmen who had congregated in front of saucon hall eagerly awaited the freshmen who when they did come did not molest the sophs taken unawares the freshmen were set upon by the sophs at the entrance on new street where a small rush resulted attention sophomores ! the following motion was passed in the arcadia meeting last night : whereas the creation of the conference department will necess itate the presence of some fresh men upon the streets after 7 p m and in as much as all men persu ing that course will be provided with receipts by the bursar countersigned by the director of the conference department indica ting the evenings when such instruction is given be it moved that no freshman showing such a receipt be molested while going to or from his rooms upon such an evening new system started at lehigh an entirely new idea has been adopted by the faculty and trustees and is here presented as far as known it is entirely original with lehigh . the conference department pro vides extra instruction in modern languages mathematics physics and chemistry for freshmen and sophomores class a — any student who wish es to clear up some difficulty in the modern languages mathematics physics or chemistry of the fresh man or sophomore year should consult the teachers in the con ference department on wednesday and saturday afternoons there is no fee for class a stu dents class b — students who are ad vised by the dean or by the heads of departments or by the commit tee on standing of students to take extra instruction in the conference department or students who de cide to do so of their own volition can arrange for extra instruction for any period not less than one week by consulting the director of this department who will be found in his office in packer hall at c.45 p m on monday tuesday thurs day and friday of each week the hours of instruction are from 7 to 8 and 8 to 9 on the evenings of these four days the fee of class b students 1.50 per week consisting of four consecutive recitations must be paid in advance to the bursar mr ashbaugh during his office hours at the supply bureau drown memorial hall the conference department will be located in packer hall as follows professor fox in professor meak before november first will be 1.50 otherwise 2.00 notice tennis association the tennis association held a meeting at noon on thursday which was attended by dr drinker the membership fee was discussed at lengbh and it was finally decided that the president should make a report at the next meeting on the cost of maintenance of the courts and that the fee should be based on his report a motion that the association be reorganized at the next meeting was carried so it will be to the ad vantage of any one who intends to join the association to be present in drown hall next saturday at 12.00 o'clock through dr drinker's efforts sufficient money was subscribed by the alumni to pay for building the courts so in the following letter he returned the money collected at the college meeting last year to the association in the same letter he formally gave the care of the courts into the charge of the association the money dr drinker returned together with that remaining from last year's fees gives 75.00 with which to begin this season in addition to the fall and spring tournaments and any inter col legiate matches that can be ar ranged in the spring one of the leading sporting-goods manufactu
