arcadia — thursday evening in drown hall at 7.30 the y m c a reception for the freshmen saturday night was one of the best held in recent years its success was largely due to the better facilities of drown hall over those of the gymnasium where these receptions have been held in former years a large number of students members of the faculty and their wives were in attendance a short program had been ar ranged which consisted of talks by g r brothers prof j l stewart hamilton bellis mcmurtrie and speirs selections were rendered by the band and by an octette com posed of members of the glee club after refreshments were served a very informal dance followed the music for which was furnished by the university band b h s — meeting thursday evening at lehigh home club lacrosse foot ball practice — every evening from 4 to 6 and wednes day afternoon cheering practice — tuesdays thursdays and fridays at 5 p m on lehigh field miners meeting at a meeting of the athletic committee held june 5 1908 the following men of last spring's la crosse team were awarded the l gonzales brumbaugh barth ar cher rowan a.osbourne morris zouck duncan donaldson p h hoffman harrower the following men received their monograms maeder clarke r osbourne gorman lowengrund c dorsey j g mccoy pillow homer at the college meeting held last friday f»>r the purpose of electing a manager for the lacrosse team and an assistant for the track team considerable foot bail enthu siasm was aroused by coach dick son after calling the meeting to order president bellis congratulated the freshmen upon their line showing on thursday at the same time impressing upon them the neces sity of checking their enthusiasm and keeping it within the proper limits coach dickson declared that not only must a tt am be in the right physical but also in the right mental condition to be successful and then showed how the latter is developed more by enthusiastic side line cheering than anything else in impressing upon everyone the necessity of coming to cheering practices he drew a comparison between the men who come out and receive knocks and bruises every afternoon for little or no honor and others who seem unwil ing to give up a couple of hours a week for cheering morris captain of the lacrosse team announced that regular practice would begin on october 12th for monday wed nesday and saturday afternoons after the meeting adjourned the republicans held a rally and the juniors and seniors held meetings the elections resulted in the choice of mervine 09 for lacrosse man ager and f c lawrence 10 assistant manager of the track team chemical meeting junior class meeting the first meeting of the mining society will be held in williams hall on wednesday at 7.45 p m professor eckfeldt will give a talk concerning his experiences in mex ico while c c shorkley 08 and l b treat 10 will describe their summer's work in the mines at franklin furnace n j as this is the first meeting of the year it is desired that all miners in the three upper classes be present all freshmen chemists and chemical engineers are urged to be present at the first meeting of the chemical society which will be held in saucon hall on tuesday evening october 13th papers as follows will be read : " a profitable vacation a edgar 05 inks and ink analysis l r carrier 09 sunday evening service senior class meeting the hard fought contest with the heavy rutgers 1 earn saturday was a decided improvement in many respects over the game with stevens last week the visitors not only had weight but could handle the ball and were strong in forward pass formations on the other hand our team as a whole showed more life and ginger and less individual playing than last week the front line deserves special praise for hold ing so splendidly on our one-yard line in the second half thus preven ting the visitors from scoring the game was exciting throughout and although lehigh outplayed their heavier opponents to some extent adctory was only made sure at the end of the second half when kitchell went through centre for the second touch down rutgers kicked off to billheimer who passed the ball to martin who returned th punt the ball re mained mostly in the centre during the early part of the game during which time both teams were penali zed for offside and rougl play inconsistent with straight foot-ball finally speirs took the ball from rutgers on a forward pass aman made a 15 yard run hazard advanc ed the ball on a forward pass bake well carried the ball for a ten yard gain aman five yards speirs four yards and kitchell made first down speirs and kitchell made another first down and aman went through for a touch down speirs kicked the goal during the rest of the half neither team gained much ground and the half ended with the ball near the centre of the field in the second half lehigh kicked off to rutgers during the rest of the game our men outplayed rut gers except when the visitors carried the ball down to our one-yard line the line braced up and held and martin punted out of danger le high then carried the ball down the field and by steady gains scored a second touchdown martin kicked the immediately after the college meeting friday there was a meet ing of the junior class vice president sasser was in charge of the meeting treat the treasurer for last year gave a detailed report of the financial condition of the class his report was accepted treasurer swope then appointed a number of assistants to aid in the collection of dues giving to each a list from whom they should accept dues for this year a meeting of the senior class was held immediately after the college meeting friday bellis presided . treasurer zollinger sub mitted a report on the financial condition of the class which was accepted . following mr sumner's address mr j w roe an instructor at yale gave a brief but impressive outline of the opportunity before engineers today to better the work ing conditions of the men under them a most instructive and interest ing illustrated address was made at the regular sunday meeting by mr john sumner of new york city the talk and lantern slides served well to show the conditions now existing among the country's working classes and the methods the y m c a is taking to rectify existing evils republican club a short meeting of the republi can club was held after the college meeting friday opportunity was given to all who desired to become members of the club a statement of the necessary fare to the respect ive homes of the prospective voters was also obtained brown and white subscrip tions if paid before november first will be 1.50 otherwise 2.00 continued on third page tennis to be eligible for the finals all preliminaries in doubles and singles must be played off by wednesday evening and the results handed in to the chairman of the tourna ment committee wrestling club at the meeting last wednesday a committee was appointed to collect the intiation fee from the members who number over forty now about half the amount necessary for the purchase of a mat is in the treasury already so that as soon as this other money is collected the mat will be
