afternoon was devoted to signal practice and individual coaching the men responded well to the new plays and the forward pass in particular seemed to work better than in previous practices the latter part of the practice was given over to a hard scrimmage between the varsity and scrubs the varsity seemed to have more life in their plays than has been the case heretofore fumbles though occasional were not as noticeable as usual end runs kicks and forward passes gained much ground for the varsity the varsity started off with a rush and after running back the kick about thirty yards and mak ing a twenty-yard gain on a for ward pass lost the ball on a quar ter back kick to the scrubs on their thirty-yard line the scrubs failed to make consistent gains and the ball changed hands several times when wood managed to score the first touchdown around right end the ball then see-sawed back and forth with most of the playing in the scrubs territory tremlett for the varsity finally scored an other touchdown toward the end the scrub line held stubbornly but the varsity gained around the ends and on forward passes as a whole the practice was very encouraging all the men played harder and with more life than has been seen in former practice speirs brumbaugh and treat were obliged to leave the scrimmage due to minor injuries bakewell though out in togs was not in good enough condition to get in the line up am an was on the field helping coach the backs it is to be feared that his shoulder will keep him out of the game for a long time the men are rapidly developing a strong attack and hall monday at 5 p m civil engineering society notes the initial meeting of the elec trical society was held in the physical labaratory tuesday eve ning at 7.30 president garrison outlined the work for the coining year he welcomed the sopho mores who had been voted into the society as a body the society wishes every man to draw a poster and not rely on a few to supply them all it was then decided to present a prize to the member drawing the best poster during the year the annual dues are 1.75 and should be paid to r p heller 09 at once since only the names of those paid up will be printed in the epitome as members of the society the first address was by h g harvey 09 on telephone prac tice an outline of the telephone was given from its invention to the modern instrument and the intri cate organization of a large central office was described an interest ing talk by e p heller was on " international engineering and engineering extension the rise and developement of the engineer ing societies and their work in standardizing units were recounted and the value and the grammar of esparanto the international lan guage were illustrated on dynamo testing d m petty 10 explained by diagrams the com mercial methods used in testing dynamos and motors before they leave the factory he also de scribed the exacting hands through which an order must go before the finished product is delivered to the buyer the meeting then adjourned to saucon hall where a repast was served by chef myers after the alma mater had been sung the meeting adjourned 1911 class meeting the sophomore claes held a short meeting in saucon hall wed nesday noon the names of all the men who did not answer to roll call on founder's night nine in num ber were read it then developed that all of these men were kept away for good reasons in accor dance with a motion passed october 7th the excuses of these men were read and as all were approved by the class the matter was dropped ■♦■minstrel show at a rehearsal for minstrel show candidates on wednesday after noon about twenty-five men show ed up to practice over some of the new songs those men who expect to come out fortheshow should do so now as those who are out at the start and get familiar with the songs will stand the best chance of making it the next rehearsal will be at 3 o'clock sunday at the delta upsilon house in a recent letter to this society prof c l thornburg has gener ously offered a prize of ten dollars in gold to the student preparing and presenting the best paper be fore the society while the program for the
