short college meeting was held on friday morning almost the entire time was given over to the practicing of several new songs for football use at the opening of the session chairman bellis an nounced the cancellation of satur day's football game with dickinson this came as a big surprise to the student body as great preparations were under way for the event however it was decided to continue with the pre-arranged programme and as a result was roted to hold the smoker in addition to this at the sug gestions of the arcadia th e students them decided to send a letter to the faculty asking that the satur day morning preceeding the lafa yette game on nov 20 be declared a half holiday in case such action is taken by the faculty the recita tions for that day will be heard upon the following wednesday afternoon at the conclusion of the business session song-leader serfass took charge of the meeting and with the assistance of the college glee club drilled the men in singing several new songs after the college meeting proper several speeches were made by chairman bellis captain speirs and president lawson of the junior clas-s urging the members of the sophomore and freshmen classes to avail themselves of the opportunities offered by the newly organized conference school which is the result of much hard work on the part of several members of the college faculty superintended by president drinker in view of the fact that there will not be a football game hero next saturday and the athletic field will not be in use a lacrosse game between two picked teams will be played the teams have beeu carefully selected and evenly matched and an in crest ing contest is expected the principal object of having this game is to give the old men practice and the new men an opportunity to show what they are worth the prospects for next spring are the best in years consi dering that some of the new men look very promising in general the practices this fall have been a success those men who have availed themselves of the oppor tunity to perfect their stick work have undoubledly profited by it and the results of same will be more evident next spring when the sea son opens some of the players in - eluding a few of the older men are inclined to the belief that they are good enough without practice which i a laughably deeiptive idea the competition for positions next spring is going to be very close and the man who has worked hardest and has the ability will un doubtedly win out no matter if he has never seen a lacrosse stick be fore this fall aside from the above it is well known that we have in the past few years been handicapped in our games with john hopkins by poor stick work the old men who know this and are not making an effort to take away this handicap are undoubt edly not showing the proper spirit regular practices will be held as scheduled until thanksgiving or such time as it seems best to stop on account of bad weather and all candidates for the team are expect ed to attend these practices through the efforts of president drinker and the result of his work together with that of several friends of the college the difficulty which the members of the freshmen class incurred on the night before found er's day in which it was claimed by a resident of packer avenue that considerable damage had been done to his property and for which he demanded the sum of fifty dol lars as restitution has been cleared by a compromise the claimant has agreed to accept the sum of twenty-five dollars in payment for the repairs necessary this amount will be paid to him in a short time by the treasurer of the freshmen class freshman bible group this year it has been thought ad visable to do away with the usual groiip system of bible study in the freshmen class and inaugurate in its place a single large freshmen bible class to be taught by an older man rev h e rondthaler has been kind enough to corn-cut to take this class and the freshmen are indeed fortunate to be able to take up the work under his direction faculty action the first meeting is scheduled for 6.45 wednesday evening and it is hoped that there will be a large number of men present the game scheduled for october 24 with dickinson has resulted in what threatens to be an open ath lttic rupture between the two insti tutions the athletic committee after due deliberation protested the playing oi mount pleasant on the dickinson team and dickinson refused to consider this protest so that the game had to be abandoned the particulars of the matter are given here several weeks ago professor thornburg who is secretary of the athletic committee wrote unof ficially to the chairman of the faculty athletic committee at dickinson in this letter professor thornburg said that according to reports mount pleasant had played on the dickinson team against franklin and marshall that he un derstood that mount pleasant held some position as assistant in gym nasium at dickinson and that he was ineligible under the four year rule he wished to know whether mount pleasant was recognized by the dickinson athletic committee as a member of the team and said that if such was the case he for his part would do his utmost to induce our athletic committee to protest mount pleasant in reply a very indefinite letter was received from dickinson stating that mount pleasant was a bona-fide junior at that college was not a member of the instructing force and that the fact that he was an amateur was fully attested by his acceptance by the authorities at the olympic games in england last summer in the meantime a letter had been received from glenn warner car lisle indians coach stating that owing to mount pleasant's having participated in several other branches of athletics at that school for more than four years he was not eligible to the indian team this season these letters were sub mitted to the members of the exec utive board of the athletic com mittee and they were unanimous in voting that a protest be made this committee consists of two faculty members two alumni and one undergraduate as a result the following was sent to the dick inson authorities :
