1927 team the senior civil engineers leave monday morning on their annual tour of inspection in new york city the trip this year is to last for three days during which time a number of civil engineering projects in the vicinity of new york and several of the large office build ings in the business section are to be inspected the plans for the trip have been made after some difficulty as the depart ment has received many more offers of inspection tours from engineering companies than the allotted time could afford and to make out the program has been a process of elimination the present schedule of events is one that should prove most interesting and every moment of the entire three days is to be taken up with the various trips con on page 2 col 3 the engineers are to leave bethlehem at 5 45 monday morning and are to proceed to new york by the way of the lehigh valley arriving in the city at 8:00 o'clock the men intercollegiate 115 pound champion will succeed best ten undergraduates were bid to the lehigh chapter of phi beta kappa and will be elected to membership at the next meet ing which will probably be held before the easter vacation the undergraduates whose scholastic records have secured for them recognition represent four curricula in the univer sity included in the list are honor students in the colleges of arts and sciences business administration chemical en gineering and electrical engin eering the men invited to membership are : benny weinstein b a m a stoff let b a f c smith b a j g jackson ch e f g rear ch e d m mong e e ; r e freeman bus e l walters bus ; louis bogart bus and e d griffenberg bus ; all seniors these ten men have been able to carry a surprising amount of extra-curricula work in addition to maintaining their excellent scholastic ratings benny weinstein was able to keep up an honor course in german during the entire bas ketball season through which he served as captain of the le high team millard stofflet in con on page 3 col 1 ) coil-egypt the 1926 pro duction of the mustard and cheese club is by this time in a state of organization which augurs well for a successful production and one of the best college shows to go on the stage this year coach darcy of the wayburn organization has been putting the men through their paces in a vigorous manner darcy is pleased with the progress shown to date and from the looks of things it will not be long until the produc tion will be ready for the dress rehearsals drilling the cast and chorus daily has been the routine for the past two weeks and the manner in which the men are now going through in tricate steps speaks conclusive ly for the ability of the coach it is a long process to drill amateurs for stage work but without a doubt much has been accomplished to see the erst while students affecting the pose and manner of the fair female causes some merriment and de light among those who have been fortunate enough to wit ness any of the rehearsals the chorus beginning with con on page 4 col 3 varsity and frosh trackmen practice at a meeting of the swim ming team held in the trophy room tuesday afternoon the varsity men elected walter al len raleigh as captain for next year the position rested be tween one other junior and al and he seemed the pop ular choice having served on the squad since his freshman year he has participated in every meet this year and turned in some creditable records in these meets his strongest points were in the relay where he was lead-off man and in the 50 and 100 yard distances he also swam in the backstroke in several meets at the intercollegiates held in taylor pool last saturday ral eigh led off on the relay team for the brown and white and placed third in the 50 against lewis and foster of rutgers two champions in the east raleigh's activities also ex tend to other sports for in foot ball he has earned many yards at halfback in lacrosse he is certain of a berth on the var sity having played as substi tute a few times last year he is a member of cyanide for merly holding the office of vice president and now that of pres ident with the resignation of bill littell from college al attended prep school in can on page 3 col 2 tankmen have fair season as a whole schedule arran'd intramural sports get under way lehigh mat squad guests at dinner varsity squad augmented by strong material from last year's frosh score three wins out of six against strong teams second in eastern meet four events held in gym last week boxing wednesday r a lewis host to cham pion team and other guests at spring valley to repair track raleigh stars gift for coach schedule posted through the co-operation of the american welding society a welding symposium was held here last tuesday for the pur pose of instructing senior en gineers in the art of that newly developed science the society sent mr thum a special repre sentative here to lecture and demonstrate the latest processes in commercial welding the meet was held mainly in the physics lecture room and the attendance of all senior engin eers was required the sym posium was divided into an af ternoon and evening meeting at which times different phases of the subject were presented . professor bradley stoughton opened the afternoon session in the absence of professor lar kin with a brief history of welding the growth of the process has progressed remark ably in the past few years due to its importance during the war it was then used to a great extent in the ship build ing work as welding greatly facilitated work on the steel structures the process presented to the engineers was that of fusion welding in this method the metal by which the welding is to be accomplished is fused by the heat of an oxy-acetylene torch it then drops on the fracture to be joined hardens and holds the joint firmly in place the oxy-acetylene torch may be used to act in two capa cities namely as a cutting ma chine and as a welding device to accomplish this it is neces sary that the torch have two types of flame when a torch is made for cutting purposes it oxidizes the metal to such an con on page 2 col 3 transportation and some fea tures of plant management were the subject of the talk given by mr w o hearsey at the chem meet wednesday the 24th in the chem building mr hearsey is the division su perintendent of the service de partment of bethlehem steel co and has already addressed different student groups on this and similar subjects before the lecture a short business meeting of the chem ical society took place the minutes were read and approv ed and the president george law announced the appoint ment bf a nominating commit tee for next year's officers the committee is j jacksorf r loebell a a moliter and e k zimmerman nominations will also be made in open meet ing which will in all probabil ity take place next month by general vote the dues for next year were raised to 2.50 mr hearsey then opened his lecture with a short resume of his particular duties at the steel company enumerating the va rious departments chiefly main tenance and repair that come under his supervision he men tioned the power house con taining fourteen tandem blast furnace blowers and seven twin-tandem electrical genera tors also the combustion en gineering department was cited the b t u chasers whose purpose is to investigate the thermal efficiency of all mach ines in the plant boilers blast furnaces etc con on page 3 col 5 the lecturer then gave a ser ies of statistics on transporta tion by rail chiefly throughout the whole metn definite schedules of the in tra-mural sports sponsored by professor bartlett of the phy sical education department have been posted in several con spicuous places about the cam pus some of the events in the gymnastic competition were run off last week and some of the boxing bouts were held on wed nesday afternoon and the re mainder will be hem this after noon at five o'clock the re sults of the first two contests mentioned appear below the complete schedule of the re maining events on the program is as follows : monday march 29 : 4 p m gymnastics thursday april 8 4 p m best posture test con on page 3 col 2 monday april 19 4.30 p.m quarter mile run monday april 12 4.10 a.m perfect exercises monday april 26 4.30 p.m one mile run with ideal weather favoring a successful training period coach billy o'neill is more than pleased with the outlook for the coming lacrosse season ninety men make up the unusually large squad out for this popular spring sport and the upper field is taxed to the utmost to provide the proper facilities con on page 2 col i ) previous to the arrival of coach o'neill the squad worked out in camp coppee and the entire time was devoted to stick handling this enabled the squad to be in fairly good shape for outdoor practice and it has only been necessary for the recently organized pre medical society of the univer sity held a meeting in coppee hall on tuesday evening after some brief business discussions relative to the club president thum introduced the speaker of the evening the well-known sur geon dr w estes jr in the vernacular of the street the speaker put it across in reference to his in teresting and instructive expla nation of the rise of surgery from the early egyptians to the present era dr estes deliv ered his discourse in a manner con on page 3 col 4 keen appetites whetted by weeks of strenuous training and mat work were given full sway at the spring valley inn on friday night when some 35 or 40 lehigh university wrest lers coach trainers and friends gathered around the festive board as the guests of r a lewis a most genial host and sponsor of this annual dinner to the lehigh wrestling team the wrestling team with two intercollegiate champions and with a record of four dual meets won out of six exper ienced the most successful sea son in years in this respect it might be said that the little par ty at the spring valley inn an annual affair for the last three or four years was too the most enjoyable ever held on on page 4 col 3 leaving taylor gymnasium where during the long winter months the wrestlers scarcely missed a day in going through their paces on the mat the par by placing second in the in tercollegiates the lehigh nata tors closed a fairly successful season the team was not com posed of any stars of remark able magnitude but was a well balanced combination during the season some of the strong est aquatic teams in the east were encountered lehigh con cluded a difficult schedule with a record of three victories and three defeats the season started with a dual meet against lafayette in which the brown and white mermen easily trounced their traditional rivals 34-28 in this meet the maroon won the hun dred yard dash and was award ed the relay event on a techni cality lehigh was victorious in all of the other events much less opposition was pre sented by the catholic u team and lehigh won this meet by a 48 1 4 score the varsity made a clean sweep in this meet for con on page 2 col 4 the official call for track can didates frosh and varsity has been made and the men can be seen each day plugging away getting in trim for the intra murals which will be held the first saturday after easter va cation the prospects for a crack team look exceptionally bright this year and a name for le high should be made the pros pects of the team depend en tirely upon the men and the field lehigh has the material and an abundance of that but the track and field are in ter rible shape con on page 4 col 6 the team is strengthened ma terially by the men from the frosh team of last year cul bertson for the javelin billmey er for the 100 and the quarter duffy aitken captain-elect of cross country
