brown and wf : board — meeting in drown i all tuesday january 5 at 1.30 p m gymnasium team — practice every monday wednesday and friday afternoon at 4 o'clock m e society alumni meetings very successful alumni meetings were held in philadelphia and new york last week on wednesday night 9th inst the philadelphia lehigh club held its regular monthly meeting over thirty members were present mr byron dickson being the guest of honor he gave an interesting talk on the foot ball season just passed and a resume of the lehigh - lafayette game which was much appreciated dr drinker was present and expressed the apprecia tion of the college for mr dickson s fine work as coach there was much enthusiasm over the result of the great game and hearty con gratulations to the team and its able coach . among those present were rep resentatives of 06 07 and 08 with representations scattering back to the noah's ark days of mr charles wetherill 70 the philadelphia lehigh club is one of the oldest of our local clubs it is the only local club t . r has succeeded for yea in holding regular monthly ineeungs the new york lehigh club held an informal dinner at the gradu ates club on friday evening dec 11 over seventy alumni were present dr drinker and garrett d speirs captain of our victorious team were the guests of honor professor heck was also expected but was not present this is the first occasion of a meeting at the graduates club and it proved to be a very successful experiment d m clawson 06 is a member of this club and called the atten tion of our alumni present to its advantages speeches were made by dr drinker a p smith 84 g d speirs,'o9 and many others e m mcllvain 85 formerly pres ident of the bethlehem steel co now general manager eobins con veying belt co presided basket ball practice the december meeting of the mining society was held wednes day night in williams hall among the business items which were brought up by president callen was an announcement of the schedule for the rest of the year the january meeting will be de voted to the michigan trip of last summer and the february meeting to metallurgy a number of men who took the michigan trip will give illustrated talks concerning their experiences at the first of these meetings prof ingalsbe's talk the geology of western new york was the first of the evening he described in a general way the topography of the entire section and by means of sketches showed the different strata of lime and sandstone shale etc it is in this strata that the iron ore known as the clinton ore deposits is found there are also large gypsum and salt mines in this vicinity the cement industry has been fostered by the limestone formations and new york now sends out more natural cement than any other state gas and oil fields have been exploited in the southern part of the state mr huang a graduate of st john's college china and later an english instructor in that institu tion told about the old chinese methods of mining coal coal has been known to these people for three thousand years but the small demand and primitive methods have kept the coal deposits almost undeveloped water is pumped out through bamboo pipes coal is drawn out of the mine in baskets on bamboo tracks and the ventila tion is by means of man driven fans and bamboo pipes mr huang's talk was so interesting and so highly appreciated that a vote of thanks was given him trotter 11 told of his experience in packing burros when on prospect ing trips by means of a small pack saddle he explained how groceries cooking utensils etc are securely packed on a burros back in conclusion he told many amusing incidents which he had had while on prospecting trips b h s club the december meeting of the electrical engineering society was held in the physical laboratory on tuesday 15th at 7.30 p m the attendance was fair and the papers were very interesting in order to become more closely connected with the american institute of electrical engineers the secretary will invite all local members to attend the monthly meetings prof esty discussed the advantages of membership in that body and described the formalities for admission the senior electricals are usually student members and any one so desiring may send in an application for membership on blanks which will be gladly furnished prof esty attended the last monthly meeting of the institute in new york it was the largest and longest monthly meeting ever held the paper discussed was the electrification of the new york new haven and hartford rail road it was presented by wil liam s murray lehigh 95 mr murray being chief electrical en gineer of the system the article was well developed and showed why alternating current has been adopted as a motive power continued on fourth page the first paper was by j l hays 09 on electric car light equipment mr hays has work ed for the baltimore and ohio eailroad and he described the equipment and methods of main tainance used by that road for electric car lighting c a hop pock 09 discussed the ad vantages and disadvantages of grounded lines in three-phase transmission some engineers prefer to ground the central wire while others of equal ability prefer to in sulate it from the earth both sides of the question were well ex plained neither one being ad vocated the article was short and concise the last paper was by mr d k cartwright on electric car lighting mr cartwright has charge of the electric car lighting on the lehigh valley railroad and presented the matter from an experienced stand point the development of car lighting from its advent to the pre sent methods was described in lighting steam cars by electricity there are three principal methods for supplying the power the first is the straight storage system and consists merely of a set of storage batteries placed in each car this system is simple and cheap but it can be used only for short runs and the cars require a long layover at terminals for recharging the batteries the head end equip ment provides for an electric gen erator driven usually by a steam turbine these are situated either a very interesting meeting of the mechanical engineering society was held on tuesday night in wil liams hall owing to the absence of president serfass 09 vice president mervine 09 presided sterner 09 gave a paper on fche manufacturing of projectiles he gave an outline of the various operations resorted to in order to make projectiles of first-class work manship and accuracy before accepted by the government in spector pie pointed out the main differences between the army and navy projectiles slate 11 gave the next paper on shop practice confining his re marks to the work done on a locomotive in the pennsylvania railroad shops at altoona e bird 02 superintendent of the tempering department of the bethlehem steel company gave the society one of his welcomed talks his subject was n the selection of steels rather than on its treat ment he stated that the main features upon which a careful and 1 1 1 1 b i ased select on of steel depen d - ed were the use it was to be put to its cost and finally its strength he demonstrated by sketches how steel acts under static loads and how at the present time various dynamic tests are being made with entirely different results ( continued on fourth page a general discussion followed lynch 08 employed in the crucible steel department of the bethlehem steel co gave some very interest the regular monthly meeting of the bethlehem high school lehigh club was held at the usual place on wednesday night tuesday december 29th was decided upon as the day for the open house to be held at the lehigh home club friends are invited to pay a social visit to the club about twenty live men reported for practice for the basket ball team on wednesday afternoon practice started at two o'clock and all the candidates tried their ability to shoot goals after a long session of shooting captain davies selected tour teams from all the men out and two lively games were played two teams resting while the others played good team work was noti ciable and the indications are for a successful season a number of freshmen were out and it is to be hoped that they will continue throughout the rest of the season as the strength of the team depends on the amount of practice the men get and how
