brown and white matmen win second place in big meet prior memorial drive under way discusses purpose and du ties of a dean as a coun selor to student body rutgers mermen garner major honors in taylor pool well received 5 games on tour reed and best win titles in 1 1 5 and 1 25 pound classes respectively — lewis and miller place second lehigh's aggressiveness a feature four new e s c a records are set in thrilling meet lewis of rutgers captures both sprint events in very fast time leader sets new breaststroke mark . lehigh climbed another notch in the wrestling titles when the brown and white matmen gained second place with 1 5 points in the twenty-second an nual championship meet of the eastern intercollegiate wrest ling association held at perm state on friday and saturday cornell garnered the title with twenty-two points state placed third with 1 4 ; yale fourth with 1 2 ; princeton 7 ; perm 6 ; syr acuse 4 and columbia i the brown and white team boasts of two champions jim mie reed in the 11 5 pound class and captain ralph best in the 125 pound division the latter retaining the title which just 3-5 sec faster than the former record he was tightly pressed in this event however by wynn of lehigh who forc ed levis to his best speed wynn took second while mitchell of rutgers and patterson of la fayette tied for third place warner of rutgers hung up the fourth record of the after noon in the 440 yard swim he swam with a very easy style which allowed him to sprint at the end to finish up the quarter mile in 5 minutes 34 1-5 sec onds the former record was 5:40 3-10 harmon took sec ond place in this event with march rutgers third and pen nington lehigh fourth con on page 4 col 6 frosh told about steel industry dr ward delivers vivid addresses illustrated talk subject what is a dean and brought out the function of his office in a most interesting manner fol lowing is the text of his talk : the subject of my talk this afternoon can best be expressed perhaps in a question or rather two questions what is a dean and if so why in most classification talks it is unnecessary i suppose for the speaker to explain what his business or profession means if a lawyer for example gives such a talk he does not have to tell you what a lawyer is you may or may not approve of what a lawyer is but you know what he is the job of a dean however is much less well-de fined and well-known so i will try first of all to tell you what a dean is and does the dean is a sort of all around trouble-shooter about a university of course he is not the big trouble-shooter — not the shooter that is of the biggest troubles in a university just as in a bank or any other firm or corporation the big trouble shooter is necessarily the presi dent the president is the man to whom the this week in the pull-up event lehigh and lafayette delegates confer on arcadia sug gestions chairman zug of the prior memorial financial committee has announced that the cam paign for funds will be carried on throughout this entire week he requests that the following announcement be published as the total cost of the mem orial including two tablets one for each side of the gate will be very close to 1400 it is ab solutely necessary that every student and faculty member give a dollar otherwise it will be ne cessary to carry the campaign to the alumni and bethlehem friends of the university it is the hope of the omicron delta kappa society that all funds will be obtained from students and faculty alone and that it will prove unnecessary to go to outside sources every member of the so ciety has been assigned to two or three living groups and ev ery group will probably have heard from their man by this time it is hoped that the head of the group will take charge of collections from his house sim ply turning over the money to the o d k member in return for so many buttons all down town men men not residing in a living group will have their chance to contribute through fred trafford at the y m c a office or thru any o d k with whom they come in touch on the campus all o d x.'s will be distinguished by the blue and white ribbons on their lap el after the only unusual ma chines which one would prob ably not see ordinarily as on an occasional visit to the bethlehem steel co three reels of pic tures were then shown two of the reels dealt with the man ufacture of solid-rolled steel last chance to save a dollar on epitomes on wednesday evening march 1 7 representative committees from lehigh and lafayette met to discuss the betterment of re lations between these two insti tutions the lehigh represen tatives were hoffman bond and bell while those of lafayette were rheinhold pershing and barber there has been considerable discussion on the subject of pre venting various acts of vandal ism which have been committed from time to time such as the painting in front of the chapel last november just before the lehigh-lafayette football game such actions are certainly not in keeping with the best tradi tions of both lehigh and lafay con on page 4 col 3 the scripture lesson for the morning address was of mat hew and his subject was chos en from explained that re gardless of the advanced steps taken in the last years and of the endless store of informa tion uncovered due to the in ceasing desire for knowledge the difference between black and white and right and wrong remains as it was in the days of our grandfathers our super ior knowledge helps not in the least when our conscience dic tates education has clouded over the situation but neverthe less the determination remains the same in the case of the student the mind is open and at liberty to absorb the truths and the prin con on page 4 col 6 seniors notice the intra-mural sports pro gram as outlined by professor bartlett was launched last fri day in the upper gym when the contest in the bar-vault stand ing broad jump and pull-ups were run off both the bar-vault and stand ing broad jump were won by presbrey who outclassed his nearest competitor in both ev ents by wide margins he show ed exceptionally fine form in winning the bar-vault the pull up contest resulted in a tie be tween three contestants all three succeeded in counting up 19 points and it will be neces sary to decide the winner some time this week the events in rope-climbing buck-vaulting for distance and the push up on parallel bars will all be held during the present week also bart " will still accept candidates for all events and will give all necessary in struction ou march 29th the general con on page 4 col 3 he won last year there are also two second place winners included among the local mat men dick lewis in the 135 pound class and tubby miller in the heavyweight division cor nell boasts of a similar number of title holders and 3 second place winners with chakin 1 35 pound champion and captain affeld heavyweight winner the ithaca runners-up are loeb 115 pounds geyer 145 pounds and partee 1 58 pounds the other title winners are captain buttrey of princeton in the 145 pound division ; russell and mil ler of yale in the 175 and 158 pound classes respectively this is the fourth time in the history of the sport that lehigh has placed second in the cham pionship meet with the loss of the cornell and navy dual meets some of the brown and white supporters were wont to lose heart but it was merely the lull before the storm the le high matmen exhibited at least the equal if not better form than was shown in any of the dual meets always using aggressive tactics and never stalling for time it was this spirit of ag gressiveness which repeatedly won the plaudits of the specta tors who at the start of the meet were wont to be friendly to ward the wearers of the brown because they realized that le high and cornell were the two big obstacles in the champion ship path of state's grapplers but as the meet wore on and state faded as a contender for the title the bethlehem wrest lers became the recipients of much applause and increased in popular favor five brown and white grap plers won their preliminary bouts but some after the hard est struggles which they exper ienced in the entire meet jim mie reed won a decision over servais of perm the latter be ing the brother of the red and blue coach captain best al most met his waterloo against jeffers the orange captain the bout ran into extra periods af ter the syracuse man had al most gained the necessary time advantage in the first extra period the lehigh captain show ed perhaps the greatest ability of his brilliant career when he pinned his opponent's shoulders to the mat after two minutes and thirteen seconds of the first period gaining lehigh's first point lewis defeated burroughs of yale on a decision with plenty of time to spare heilman drew a bye since capra who was to have been matched with him was declared ineligible wil liamson had the misfortune to meet miller of yale the only man who had defeated him all season and miller repeated his con on page 3 col 2 during its sixth annual meet the fastest meet ever held by the eastern collegiate swim ming association in which con testants from rutgers swarthmore lafayette and lehigh vie d for individ ual honors four league records were broken rutgers carried off team honors with a total of 49 1-2 points with lehigh a fairly close second 30 points lafayette placed third with 6 1-2 points while the swarthmore team failed to gar ner any points in justice to swarthmore however it must be said that their only entries were in the fancy diving event lehigh made a very creditable showing considering the fact that the team from rutgers is the best ever produced at new brunswick the brown and white natators took the only two events in which they had any chance at all to place first the fancy diving event and the 200 yard breast-stroke herb hobbs displayed probably his best form of the season in tak ing the fancy diving event al though curry of rutgers forc ed him to his limit curry took second place while jack hayes nosed out biles of lafayette for third imace who had to be con tent with a rating of fourth hobbs was exceptionally strong in the required dives with a rating of eight the whole way through and he also acquired a rating of 7.5 for his optional performance the four records made in the meet were made in the relay the 1 50-yard back-stroke the 440-yard swim and the 200 yard breast-stroke in the breast-stroke leader was in the pink of condition and not only defeated brown who had de feated him in the rutgers meet but at the same time clipped 9 4-5 seconds off the league rec ord which had formerly been held by brown the showing which leader made was the best performance of the entire meet coxe also came through in this event and took third place rut gers took the relay as had been expected in record time but lehigh was far from outclassed in this event taking a close second lafayette placed third lewis of rutgers
