enjoyed a very pleasant evening although the attendance was not as large as usual the first paper was by j . t rees 10 and was concerned with the development of the blast furnace in the lehigh valley mr rees told of the very simple furnaces which were constructed in the early part of the last century and of the vari ous experiments and modifications which developed among these were the compressed air blast hot stoves and increased size in the furnace itself among the many iron companies holding charters in 1840 the only company holding its original charter today is the thomas iron company mr rees also des cribed the first pig-iron machines as compared with those of to-day e g t oo'«rs ; mo told of mining operations about salt lake city copper is one of the principal pro ducts large been discovered in various camps and extensively developed mr rogers spoke of the amount of litigation which has come from the destructive effects of the fumes from the various smelters several smelters have been closed on this account but many have de vised means to remove the arsenic from the fumes j c gorman 10 in his paper described very minutely the manu facture of steel by the bessemer process he first described the construction of a cupola and the method of its operation pig-iron limestone and coke are charged in to the cupola and the molten iron is taken from this to the converter by means of a chart mr gorman illustrated the converter showing the converter proper blast box and trunnions he also described in detail the process of removing the impurities by means of the air blast president callen gave a short description of the galey dry blast process by means of this process the moisture is removed from the air blast giving an increased amount of iron and necessitating less coke student meeting sunday the university band has made arrangements to hold a second dance on saturday evening feb ruary 27 refreshments will be served tickets are now on sale for one dollar speakers were unable to be present on ac count of an engine test mr lotz '()(>, gave a very in teresting talk on the experiences of the young engineer he spoke on the work done in the care of boilers aligning of engines pipe fitting etc the hints he gave re lative to the above subjects will be invaluable to those who heard them he brought out the fact that the graduate just out of college has a great deal to learn and that the sooner he realizes this the better it is for him jim myers followed with an appetizing talk on eat drink and be merry john a brodhead 07 of beth lehem and at present employed in bridgeport conn was married on wednesday evening to miss bou nian of bethlehem the february meeting of the electrical society was held in the physical laboratory on tuesday evening the meeting was very well attended in spite of the dis agreeable weather the program for the evening consisted of a paper on train resistance by mr c e clewell e.e 05 and a discussion of the construction of high tension transmission lines by mr lamar lynden of new york city mr clewelljin discussing train resistance '' gave two experimental formulae one due to davis and the other used by the baldwin locomotive company to determine such resistance the factors enter ing into the said formulae being journal resistance track resistance resistance due to wind the inertia possessed by the train itself and fly wheel resistance mr lynden's discussion was extremely interesting and instruct ive from the practical standpoint lie mated that three prime con ditions which must be met in con structing high tension transmission lines are the amount of energy to be supplied at the other end of the line the distance from the source to the point of distribution and the character of the load he worked several problems to show the best working conditions for a line to be operated under given specifications in working the problems account was taken of cost of copper size of wires cost of insulators poles cross arms and transformers inter est on the investment and depreci ation of materials used as well as mechanical stability for different values of voltage it was shown that except for unusual conditions poles may be used to better advan tage than steel towers from the financial standpoint and also that for higher voltages the cost of insulators transformers and switch board apparatus increases in con clusion mr lynden emphasized the fact that in this work as in most engineering work the chief aim must be to get the best oper ating results from the capital in vested so as to satisfy both custo mer and stockholder adjournment followed the cus tomary wa b h s l club the regular monthly meeting of the bethlehem high school lehigh club was held on wednesday night at the
