minnie crudup vesey in folk lore songs in drown hall at 8.00 p m tuesday march 2 in the first game abroad of this season the varsity basket ball team was defeated by delaware college at delaware on saturday evening by a score of 23 to 20 tha entire game was slow and lacked vim upon the part of both teams but however considering the fact that this was the first experience that the university team has had with a strange and larger floor their work was very creditable the first half ended with the score as tie 11 to 11 but in the second half the delaware team pulled away from lehigh and by a short margin closed out victorious the delaware college gymnasium had been the scene of a dance on friday evening and as a result the condition of the floor was not exactly conducive to fast playing in addition to this dribbling was almost impossible and unavoidable fouling was frequent with these disadvantages taken into consider ation the score would hardly have been other than it was at the conclusion of the first half the host team threw a goal after time had been called by the timekeepers and it was allowed to stand by the referee this goal tied the score and materially gave delaware a lead for the second half street was the star player for lehigh with four field goals and dayett was a close second for premier honors with seven goals from fouls ruth did the bulk of the work for lecture the next lecture in the college lecture series will be given on friday morning february 26th at 11.30 o'clock by robert s perry a graduate of the chemical depart ment in the class of 1888 on " coatings for the conservation of structural material mr perry is president of harrison bros & co inc of philadelphia pa and director of the scientific section of the paint manufacturers associa tion of the united states this association under the direction of mr perry is carrying on a most exhaustive and important series of experiments in connection with the question of corrosion and de cay the paint manufacturers association appropriated 20,000 for the purpose of these experi ments which have been directed toward developing a preservative which can be made on a scientific basis and at a cost which will render it of practical commercial use in the protection of structural materials employed in every form of building mr perry has lectured on this subject at the massachusetts institute of technology before the american society of chemical industry mr perry is one of lehigh's most prominent and enthusiastic alumni and is now president of the philadelphia lehigh club all lehigh men should attend this lec ture not merely for the educational benefit to be derived but as well to greet a prominent alumnus the alumni banquet held at the eagle hotel bethlehem brought to a close the washington's birth day celebration over two hun dred were present including the guests of the university members of the board of trustees members of the instructing force and alu mni the banquet was given un der the auspices of the lehigh home club and the committee in charge r m bird 02 p a lambert 83 w l wilson 88 h t morris 91 and h r wal ters 08 are to be heartily congra tulated on its success the ban quet hall was very extensively decorated with banners and penn ants of different colleges and a most delightful dinner was served prof p a lambert 83 acted as toast-master while 11 ij walters 08 lead the cheering dr drink er was the first speaker of the even ing he talked of the improvments that had been effected at lehigh in ti.e last few years through the aid and interest of the alumni and heartily praised the present facul ty and their assistants he spoke of the awakened interest of the alumni body and the work yet be fore them president war field of lafayette college was on the toast list but was unavoidable called out of town dr hart professor of chemistry at lafayette responded to his toast in a very able talk he told of his close personal friendship with the late dr drown and of the existing good will and honest rivalry be tween the two institutions e a grace 99 was called to new york and was therefore unable to res pond to the toast assigned him but his place was ably filled by h t morris 91 who spoke of the inti mate relation of the bethlehem steel co to lehigh and paid an excellent tribute to our esteemed trustee uncle john fritz in the absence of dr sparks the lehigh banner and alumni button to be presented to him were deliv ered to professor pond of state college and he replied with an able and witty speech of acceptance for dr sparks professor john s steward then gave an extremely interesting talk on the relationship of the technical man to the econom ic politics of t-his republic he paid a well deserved tribute to the mem ory of our founder s b warriner 90 was next on the list he told of the achieve ments of lehigh men and the re sponsibility of the alumni to keep in touch with their abna mater and contribute toward her support a charles 11 . lerch a m principal of the lerch preparatory school easton pa lemuel whi taker ph d principal of the southern manual train ing high school philadelphia pa awarded prizes as follows : first prize of 25 to william ziegler price second prize of 15 to in young third prize 10 to william jacob bobbins president drinker announced the appointment of assistant prof robert w hall ph d to the professorship of biology prof hall was graduated in 1895 from the sheffield scientific school of yale with the degree of ph b he subsequently took the degree of b a at harvard in 1897 and the degree of m a in the following year at harvard in 1901 he took the degree of ph d at harvard after a course of four years gradu ate work in zoology dr hall than taught for three years at the sheffield scientific school of yale after which he came to lehigh next in order was the presen tation of edwin erie sparks presi dent of the pennsylvania state college for the degree of doctor of laws in this ceremony bishop talbot represented the trustees and professor thayer the faculty prof thayer said in part president sparks was born in ohio in 1860 and early dis tinguished himself at the state university both as a student and teacher receiving the degree of b a in 1884 and m a in 1891 after some years of service as principal and as superintendant of schools iv ohio pres sparks was called to the state college of penn sylvania in 1890 he served there until 181)5 when he was called to the university of chicago in the department of history here he further received the degree of ph.d from 1895 to 1908 pres sparks served as professor of american history in the univer sity of chicago severing his con nection there with regret on both monday afternoon in the gym nasium lehigh defeated st
