ing of the y m c a was address ed by key james robinson pastor ofthefhst presbyterian church bethlehem eev eobinson gave a very forceful talk on unseen environment lie spoke of the of the effect of a hidden spirit which controls our thoughts and actions provided we allow this spirit to work prof blake and prof hughes attended the meeting of the state legislature in harrisburgiast week where an important educational law was acted upon announcement the civil engineering society has been fortunate in securing mr george c whipple assoc m a s c e to deliver a lecture on the principles of water purifi cation mr whipple has a broad reputation as a member of the firm of hazen and whipple consulting engineers of new york city the lecture will be given in the physics laboratory and will be illustrated by lantern slides students of all departments are given an invitation to attend the program will be completed by an address on con structive problems of the south & by far one of the most interesting and instructive lectures given be fore the college this year was that delivered by mr robert s perry 88 as related in the last issue of this paper mr perry is president of harrison bros & co one of the largest paint companies in the country and is also chemical direc tor of the scientific section of the paint manufacturers association so that mr perry is well qualified to talk on the subject which was coatings for the conservation of structural material in developing his subject mr perry dwelt upon the extreme im portance of the matter of protecting structural materials from the weath er and other destroying agents the proper protection of our struc i tures or the lack of proper protec tion means the saving or the loss of many millions of dollars annually in this country in the idea of quickest possible returns on our money we have hitherto given cheapness the preference in build : ing rather than to durability but it is a very easily deduced fact that the cost of protective coatings is negible in consideration with the conservation of the wealth they produce business men areawaken jng to this fact and as a result the paint making industry has evolved into a science in order to bring this industry under scientific lines it was necess ary that experiments be made with paint coatings in the laboratory until very recent times this was impossible as the only part of paint coatings available was the surface which the paint presented on wood or metal however this difficulty has been overcome and there has been devised a paint coating which consists of paint alone and looks very much like a piece of heavy white kid mr perry had several of these coatings with him and demon strated their use in experimentation by means of these paint coatings much has been learned one thing in particular being easily shown that all paints are porous and admit of the passage of gases through them continued on fourth page the most important knowledge however that has been learned by this systematic study of paints is that which has been learned re garding pigments heretofore pig ments have beeu used solely with an eye to their color and without any regard to their effect on the material they covered today how ever it is known that certain pig ments and certain mineral const i tuents of paint conduce to rust while others inhibit rust there is a third class which is called inert consequently when an engineer to day examines a paint formula he should see to it that the pigments the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday march 2 1909 college lecture lecture by robert s perry 88 calendar athletics appointed director of outdoor vol xvi by dickson v..m c a lecture course — minnie crudup vesey in folk lore songs in drown hall at 8.00 p.m tuesday march 2 arcadia — meeting in drown hall at 2.30 p m wednesday march 3 civil society — meeting in the physical laboratory wednesday march 3 at 7.45 p m band practice — in the physical laboratory at 7.30 thursday march 4 mining society — meeting in williams hall at 8 p m thurs day march 4 college lecture — by h w dv bois 92 in the physical lab oratory at 11.30 a m friday march 5 the athletic committee has appointed mr b w dickson to the position of director of outdoor athletics at lehigh university and has placed him in responsible charge of outdoor sports he will coach the base ball and foot ball teams and will have general over sight of the coaching of the other outdoor teams in order that the athletic material in the university may be developed ami properly placed on the different teams mr dickson will reside in south bethlehem while the univer sity is in session and will give his entire time to the duties of his office basket ball swarthmore 45 lehigh 16 no 36
