mentation is the settlement of par ticles held in suspension in water and owes its effect wholy to the force of gray ' ; y . the rapidity with which parti s settle in water var ies directly ith their size the efficiency of a filter is not affected by its depth but by the surface it pre sents to the waters the substance which offers the greatest surfn.ce is fine sand which is the substance chiefly used in filters mr whipple showed several examples of sand filters on the screen the filter plant at albany n v being a typical plant the settling basins for removing the mud and the washing systems for cleaning the sand were shown and explained in detail the coagulation method of puri fication requires the use of mechani cal filters these filters involve the use of some chemical commonly alum or aluminum sulphate which serve to coagulate the bacteria or solid matters which are contained in the water the efficiency in point of speed of the mechanical filter is much greater than that of the sand filter the rate of the for mer being 125 million gallons per day to 8 million gallons per day for the latter the aeration method is used in cases where gases and odors are desired to be removed from the water the value of this method is not considered to be of such a great importance today as it has been in the past the disinfection process is one that has been used in very recent times the object of this method is to destroy bactecia con tained in the water in foreign countries ozone has been used but chloride of lime has proved very effective in this country in concluding mr whipple
