first paper presented was by s e schealer 09 on the pre sent status of the tungsten lamp the tungsten lamp is a recent in vention and has been on the mark et a comparatively short time the filament of the lamp is made of powdered tungsten and a paste which when dry becomes hard and can be formed into wire its initial cost is higher than that of the carbon lamp but it consumes only a fraction of the power required by the carbon filament and there fore will pay for itself in a short time in europe it is used to a great extent prof seyfert described the sin gle phase commutator motor by means of large diagrams the manu facture and operation of this mach ine was fully explained . there are power losses in this machine that do not occur in other motors yet its desirable action and uses more than counterbalance any imperfections in its construction these motors are used on the new haven locomo tives on electrolysis a s garrison 09 discussed the action of stray electric currents on underground pipes the usual return circuit of an electric railway is through the rails but when the current finds a path of less resistance it leaves the rail and follows this path which is usually to some pipe line of course it must again leave the pipe and at this point electrolytic action takes place the pipe is slowly corroded and large holes develope with con sequent leaks many remedies have been tried these are more or less successful but none are perfect heavy fines often result from suits instituted by gas and water com panies the society extended a vote of thanks to dr and mrs drinker afternoon the lacrosse squad was put through the livelist prac tice possible in the limited space afforded by the cage captain morris although still handicapped from the effects of his recent illness was out with the men directing the work and doing what stick work his condition would permit the athletic field was too wet to be used otherwise a spirited outside scrimmage might have been expected however the field will be in condition to be used in a few days and the practices will then assume a more serious nature the number of men out at every practice is decidedly encouraging and it is to for a mining engineer many criticisms appear in our periodicals of the theoretical train ing of mining engineers and geo logists probably a large part of these are caused by some ridiculous theories which have been proposed all theories are started to account for some phenomenon and a gener ally accepted but nnproven idea may speedily develop to an accepted theory a working hypothesis is essential and is used properly when evidence is sought to establish or overthrow it two classes of theo ries are necessary to formulate in an economic region first there is the structural theory condi tions are often so complex that no definite structure can be deduced at first although some indications may point to a definite structure second there must be a theory of ore deposits or of ore occurance for if the method of formation is known other deposits will probably be found in closing dr miller stat ed that theoretical training makes the best basis for practical work the second paper
