the regular monthly meeting of the arts and science club was held in saucon hall last thursday evening the meeting was devoted to french and german literature and under that head two fine papers were read one by j m toohy 10 on victor hugo's french revolution and the other by g h biugham 10 on the life of heine both were very instructive and fully enjoyed c s sauber 09 also gave a very interesting talk on pennsylvania germans at the conclusion of the regular programme an informal discussion took place in which professors blake palmer and luch and several of the members of the club participated the following nominations were made for officers for next year president bobbins 10 and toohy mo vice-president rhodes 10 shultz 10 and mccreary 11 secretary bingham 10 knause mo and hasek ml treasurer more mo and kerr ml members at large of executive committee gilmore mo kaufmann mo hasek ml toohy mo the election will be held at the next meeting college lecture alumni dinners a lecture on constantinople will be given by the eev s u mitman in the auditorium of the physical laboratory on friday morning may 7th at 11 o'clock the lecture will be illustrated with about 100 lantern views from photographs taken by dr mitman on the architecture scenery and life of the place civil society mr gardiner f williams cali fornia 65 gave a most interesting and instructive lecture last friday morning in the physics laboratory his subject was diamond and gold mining in the transvaal and since mr williams was man ager of the deßeers mine there for some years he was able to give many statistics and relate many interesting facts which are un known to many mr williams in speaking of the gold mines said that but one eighth of the laborers were whites the natives and chinese outnumber ing them about live and three to one respectively he then illus trated by slides the interior of some of the mines and gave a brief des cription of how the mines are managed and worked among the man statistics which mr williams gave were that in 1907 the transvaal mines produced one hundred and thirty-three mil lion dollars worth of gold in 1908 these mines produced one hundred and forty-six million dol lars worth of gold this is a little over one-third of the world's pro duction of gold for those years these mines in the last thirty-two years have produced twelve hun dred and fifty-three million dollars worth of gold in excess to that produced in the united states since 1849 when gold was first discovered in california in speaking of the difficulties of mining mr williams mentioned that the cost of production is one of the largest factors in this sort of mining the potassium cyanide process which has reduced the cost of production from five to three dollars per ton makes it profitable to mine gold running eight to nine dollars per ton turning to the diamond mines in the transvaal mr williams said the first diamond was discovered there in 1867 and that last year 1908 the mines produced ' 500 millions of dollars worth of diamonds at a profit of 125 million dollars he also showed a great many lantern slides illustrating the work ings of different mines and he de scribed attended meeting of the new york lehigh club was held at the hotel astor new york city on friday evening april 30 e m mcllvain 85 president of the club acted astoastmaster the speakers were : president it s drinker mr c w h kirchoff editor of the iron age mr c w baker editor of the " engineering news and prof mansfield merriman a noticeable leal ure of the gathering was the large attendance of older alumni by special arrangement the club procured through james myers ivy leaves from the walls of packer ham to place at each plate saturday may 1 the dramatic club went to pottsville and in pro ducing the colonials there gave the first play of this type ever seen in that city the club was met on its arrival at 11.30 a m by a committee from the pottsville high school who assigned the members to the residences of the numerous people interested in lehigh here the members were royally enter tained and the hospitality shown them will be long remembered the matinee performance went with a dash and snap which had been somewhat lacking in the pre vious performances and it is to be regretted that more people did not witness it the audience being very small . but what it lacked in mem bers it made up in enthusiasum nearly all the numbers were hearti ly applauded a crowded house greeted the play in the evening as in the afternoon the performance passed without a hitch of any kina and ihe audience was if anything more appreciative than it had been in the afternoon number after num ber was encored and in london town and angry passions the participants were kept dancing until they were forced to stop through sheer exhaustion the song by the quartette at the curtain tableau the bivouac was greet ed with a tumult of applause and so it was all the way through the musical programme each number meeting with the greatest approval the work of all the principals was excellent brumbaugh bechtel staab and kenney being worthy of special mention brummy and beck convulsed the audience in their characterizations and funny sayings in both acts the court scene taking especially well . staab and kenney made two charming girls and their dancing combined with that of messrs ham and blanch ard was one of the many features of the performance after the matinee a tea was given the club by miss dorothy lee at her home on mah an tonga st the residence was prettily decorated in brown and white lehigh pennants and banners being conspicuously dis played the members of the com pany all joined in thanking miss lee for this pleasant opportunity of meeting the charming young ladies of pottsville i)r drinker again accompanied the club on the trip and was kept busy greeting the old lehigh men who attended the performances on the whole the trip was a great success and the reputation it got in pottsville this year will serve as an excellent nucleus for any future trips there the civil engineering society holds the may meeting next wed nesday evening may
