17 at the last regular meeting the date passed was that of the week-end of may 1 st the petition sent to the faculty was for a three day affair the same as the first petition which was brought up but never presented to the fac ulty for sanction tank men to meet strong navy team navy is recognized as be ing the strongest team in the east fast meet winding up perhaps the most successful season the brown and white has ever enjoyed on the court the lehigh quintet an nexed its eleventh straight vic tory and handed the easton ri vals their third consecutive de feat of the season when it ov erwhelmed lafayette by the very one-sided score of 24-7 the whirlwind attack which benny weinstein and his fel low-players opened against the maroon combination on the la fayette floor at eight o'clock wednesday evening was far from being the slump which had been phophesied for the team although the general type of playing was not as brilliant as that which characterized the gettysburg game the sheridan wrestlers prior to the intercollegiates at perm state a victory for the homesters will restore whatever confidence was lost by last saturday's ini tial defeat at the hands of the cornell men last year lehigh opened its season by traveling to the academy where it was beaten 19-6 to redeem this set-back is the electricals meet at swarthmore basketball game in which he will ever represent the brown and white benny was the pivot of a good passing game although the shooting was quite ■ragged at times during the game in addition to seeing a bas ketball game the spectators were outside con tributions outside contribu tions will not be refused but they will not be encouraged as it is the desire of the fraternity to have the students and fac ulty pay the entire cost of the recently been installed in the freshman chemical labor atory lehigh should feel justly proud of this new apparatus not because of its monetary value which is comparatively small but because there are practically no others like it in existence it is located in the small room east of the main freshman laboratory on the second floor of the chemistry building one of the features of the apparatus is its simpli city with its consequent lack of parts to get out of adjustment the idea of this generator was conceived by assistant profes sor h v anderson who has been working on it for several months the work being com pleted on february 25 con on page 3 col 3 the apparatus consists of a steel cylinder containing fifty pounds of liquid hydrogen sul phide which is collected in a gasometer holding appproxi mately two cubic feet of gas it is then distributed through a three-quarter inch manifold from which twenty-four outlets junior prom committee appointed by cox after much dickering it has finally been decided to hold the middle atlantic states swim league championships in taylor pool march 20 by the original arrangement the championships were to alternate to the pool of the different inspection trips were inter esting as well as instructive and everyone present spent a very enjoyable day the convention opened with registration at 9:30 in the en gineering building this was followed by an address of wel come by president frank aye delotte at 10:30 then four technical papers were given the first was present devel opment in power plants by herbert estrade university of pennsylvania 26 the second was by f g kear lehigh uni versity 26 he spoke on el ectricity of motion pictures he first discussed lighting effects and how they were pro duced then he told how the latest type motion picture ma chines are constructed and how they are operated following right in line with this was a de scription of the screen used for showing the pictures kear then discussed the three kinds of light used in motion pictures they are the alternating cur rent arc the direct current arc and the incandescent lamp the advantages and disadvantages of each were discussed and he proved that the direct current arc is the best of the three he also told how the alternating current can be changed to direct current by a rotary convertor or a motor generator the main a short but important meet ing of the sophomore cotillion was held last friday night march 5 in drown hall the two main topics discuss ed were the matter of charms and the probable date of the cotillion the dance will in all likelihood take place on the first night of the house party week-end probably thursday night which seems to be the most convenient time the selection of the charms was confirmed and all those who intend to get them are ask ed to see billmeyer treasurer of the cotillion concerning them samples of the commence ment invitations for the senior class have arrived and will be placed on display in afternoon orders may be placed at that time all or ders must be paid in advance a distinct innovation in the form of a welding symposium is to take place at tehigh on tues day march 23 starting at 1 p m professor bradley stough ton is to be master of ceremo nies the symposium will open with a lecture on welding to be given in the physics lecture room by professor stoughton and mr e e thum of the pub licity of the linde air products company this will be follow ed by a practical demonstration in the fritz laboratory of cut ting and welding under the di rection of mr c a bradburn of the oxweld acetylene com pany this demonstration will include the preparation of com parative test pieces of welded and unwelded samples of the same size which will be sub jected to the same tests these tests will show the effectiveness of welding at first hand the symposium will be con tinued in the evening at which time mr thum will present a budget of unpublished data covering research work on weld ed metal joints to the members of the engineering faculty in the physics lecture room he has previously given this data to the engineering faculties of purdue university ohio state university and carnegie insti tute of technology with consid erable success there are several features about this symposium which will make it of great benefit to lehigh it will enable the sen ior engineering students to be come familiar with welding op erations and data by holding this symposium annually the university obtains a permanent loan of a complete set of weld ing and cutting apparatus which m professor bradley stough ton is to be master of ceremo nies the symposium will open with a lecture on welding to be given in the physics lecture room by professor stoughton and mr e e thum of the pub licity of the linde air products company this will be follow ed by a practical demonstration in the fritz laboratory of cut ting and welding under the di rection of mr c a bradburn of the oxweld acetylene com pany this demonstration will include the preparation of com parative test pieces of welded and unwelded samples of the same size which will be sub jected to the same tests these tests will show the effectiveness of welding at first hand the symposium will be con tinued in the evening at which time mr thum will present a budget of unpublished data covering research work on weld ed metal joints to the members of the engineering faculty in the physics lecture room he has previously given this data to the engineering faculties of purdue university ohio state university and carnegie insti tute of technology with consid erable success there are several features about this symposium which will make it of great benefit to lehigh it will enable the sen ior engineering students to be come familiar with welding op erations and data by holding this symposium annually the university obtains a permanent loan of a complete set of weld ing and cutting apparatus which should be of practical value in repairs around the campus it con on page 3 col 2 jack cox president of the junior class announces the fol lowing appointments to the junior prom committee har rier miles hayes sinwell ridsdale and wilmurt it is planned to hold the junior prom on the friday evening of the house party week-end the swimming meet schedul ed with leland-stanford for march 27 has been cancelled a bond had already been put up assuring the meet being held at lehigh but due to a custom of the athletic association it was found impossible to hold the contest the leland-stanford team on
