baccalaureate sermon by the rt rev nathaniel s thomas bishop of wyoming commencement day address alumni address to the graduating class by the hon george w wickersham ll d , attorney-general of the united states mr president and gentlemen — it seems incredible to me as i stand here that thirty four years ago i was an undergraduate of lehigh a student in the school of civil engineering destined as i then thought to follow that pro fession as my life work fortun ately i found a wise counsellor in dr henry cop pee at that time president of the university a stu dent and teacher of literature quick to recognize in a young stu dent a taste for letters and who charitably excusing my lack of aptitude for scientific pursuits by attributing to me capacity in other directions advised me to give up the study of calculus for that of blackstone for this counsel i have always been grateful i refer to it not as in itself a matter of interest to others than myself but as evidence of the far more import ant fact that even in those early days the student at lehigh was given by the faculty that sugges tion and direction which was suited to his particular needs this was hardly to have been expected at that time for the absorbing inter ests of the institution were then technical and practical and as a rule the students were endeavoring to acquire a sufficient training in scientific and engineering lines to enable them to make a living and the faculty was addressing itself to the accomplishment of that effort foreseeing the advantage to the youth of the lehigh valley of proper preparation for the demands of engineering at this time judge continued on second page honorary degree conferred on g w wickersham prof stewart in presenting mr wickersham for the degree of ll d said in part it is with peculiar satisfaction that our university selects for one its academic honors a gentleman who represents the best traditions of a noble and ancient profession he was here long enough to per ceive that the engineer and the lawyer represent he two potent influences of modern american life a worthy successor of those emi nent pennsylvanians-gilpin black stanton brewster andmacveagh in what has come to be a post of signal honor and responsibility i have the pleasure of presenting to you one whose career responds to the dignity of that line old virile english phrase one learned in the law that in conferring the degree of doctor of laws on the 1 1 onorable george w wickersham attorney general of the united states we testify to an appreciation that eminent posts make great men greater the baccalaureate sermon was preached to the graduating class on sunday in packer memorial chapel by the rt key nathaniel seymour thomas bishop of wyoming a large number of alumni students and friends of the university was in attendance key thomas chose as his text i peter 11:21 — for even hereunto were ye called because christ also suffered for us leaving us an ex ample that ye should follow his steps in his sermon eev thomas pointed out that every young man should make christ his ideal a man cannot expect to become exactly like him as an object is imaged in a mirror for in many ways this would lead to absurdities in this generation men must have that christian spirit drawing them toward per fection in mind and morals ap proaching the christian ideal lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday june 8 1909 graduating class 1909 vol xvi the brown and white no 58
