it is a great climb from police station lodger to the most useful citizen in the third city of the world a man who can do that is worth seeing and hearing and 2000 of the best people of this city came out through snow and cold last night to see and hear him — kansas city star an immense audience absorb ed every word - — washington d c post few men ever held a great audience closer than did jacob riis last night when he told the story vivid in spite of its plain ness of his own battle with the slum all in all it was one of the most remarkable lectures ever heard in jackson michigan isabel garghill beecher who will appear for the second number of the course on thursday dec sth could not be so truly an art ist in her chosen profession that of a reader if she were not first an earnest and discriminating stu dent of literature and of life which literature interprets in re sponse to a great many requests mrs beecher will read booth tar kington's facinating little tale monsieur beaucaire tarking ton who is also the author of the gentleman from indiana stands foremost among our recent american writers of fiction and monsieur beaucaire is perhaps his masterpiece it was played with much success by richard mansfield and is one of mrs beecher's very best interpreta tions a few words of apprecia tion by well known men will show better than we can why she is such a favorite john temple graves — i esti mate mrs beecher as the coming figure upon the reading platform of america she is indeed the re joicing heir to the genius and magnetism of the great scott sid dons hon j p dolliver mrs beecher has done more to give life and heart to the art of public read ing than any of our present clay elocutionists liverpool eng plain truth one of the greatest women i met was isabel garghill beecher some day she too will come to england and i predict for her a great triumph here she has be fore her a great career and an in ternational reputation mrs beech er is of the rank of our own profes sion her readings not only cap tivate but are public benedic tions the third speaker the hon champ clark of missouri will need no introduction to a lehigh audience his address last year made him many friends and his genial manner and keen wit will ensure him a warm welcome this year he will speak january 7th the last speaker will be mr george kiernan who is rapidly becoming known for his imper sonation of the most beloved of american actors — joseph jeffer son those who knew jefferson were at first skeptical about going to hear any impersonation for fear it would leave a poor rather than real picture of their old friend but there has been nothing but the highest praise for mr kiernan's work and none have been more pleased than jefferson lovers to have such a perfect rep first program of the present year on last wednesday nighl the attendance was unusually large and the interest displayed promises a very successful season the meeting was called to or der by president cunningham and after the routine business had bejen transacted three very inter esting papers were given the society was to have been favored by an address from dr drinker but circumstances neces sitated his absence instead the secretary read a letter expressing his regret for not being able to ray w walters 07 who has been on the rcportorial staff of the philadelphia public ledger has accepted a position with the south bethlehem globe a w lawson e e 07 is back this week for a short visit the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday october 18 1907 chemical society vol xv y m c a lecture course jacob a riis to be the first speaker on november 20 calendar saturday october 19 glee club rehearsal at 1.30 football med ico-chi on lehigh field at 3.30 sunday october 20 mandolin club rehearsal at 2.30 at the phi delta theta house . 510 seneca st minstrel show rehearsal at the delta upsilon house third and cherokee at 3.30 y m c a meeting at 6.30 in christmas hall monday october 21 brown and white board meeting in sau con hall at 5.15 all candidates for the board report at the same time tuesday october 22 bethlehem high school lehigh club meets at the home club on south new st freshman officers the class of 191 1 elected per manent officers on wednesday noon at a meeting held in saucon hall the contest for president was very close resulting in the choice of john scott by a very small margin over h m simp son the temporary president se lected at the beginning of the year the other officers are f v kes selman vice-president j h ray secretary and j h dillon treasurer gun club the gun club organized on wednesday the following offi cers were elected : president prizer 08 ; secretary-treasurer sheridan 08 duncan 08 chair man raine 08 and frome 00 were appointed a committee to perfect the organization and draw up a constitution for the club first meeting of year the opening meeting of the chemical society was held in sau con flail on tuesday evening president guerber presiding r c cliver 09 read a very interest ing paper entitled the manu facture of paints he treated briefly the composition and dura bility of numerous paints and var ilishes and the uses of various oils and dryers in their manufacture ] mr wm a ernst a chemist of the schaffer engineering co of nazareth who is taking special work at the university discussed the difference between rosen dale and portland cements the composition manufacture and testing of these cements offered a very interesting subject 1 the final paper of the evening was delivered by dr h u ull man who discussed at some length tiie results of experiments con ducted during the past summer his theme was new modifica tions in the estimation of titan ium after clearly showing the effect of a 30 per cent h 2 so 4 so lution on ti solutions dr ullman outlined the new colorimetric method with hydrogen peroxide in closing he stated that the ex perimental work required in this research had been conducted en tirely by john w boyer 07 after a general discussion of the papers a business meeting was called and the following commit tees appointed : program — < clewell 08 boyle 08 carrier 09 diver 09 and thayer 10 social — hatter 08 ganser 08 gilligan 09 kiefe 09 and eynon 10 ' for the remainder of the even jim myers substantially entertained the society mining society first regular meeting of the year the first rehearsal of the min strel show was held on wedndes day afternoon in christmas hall several songs were tried the number of candidates who report ed was rather smaall and the management would like to see a great many more out for the next rehearsal on sunday afternoon at the delta upsilon house the bethlehem high school lehigh club will hold its opening meeting for the year on tuesday evening oct 22 at the lehigh university home club on south new st all members together with the freshmen are urged to attend the lecture course to be given under the auspice's of the christ ian association this year is to be strongest that has been given the name which heads the list is that of jacob a riis whose career in new york city and whose books how the other half lives and the making of an american have made him a man of national reputation thir ty years odd ago he was what is called a tramp sleeping in police stations and even in grave yards he was hungry for days and was glad to eat a mess of breads and bones shoved to him through the alley window of a hotel kitchen but all this time he was looking for work he finally became po lice reporter on the new york sun and from then on he has given up his life to bettering the awful conditions in the tenement and police lodging houses in new york and has become famous throughout the english speaking world as champion of the poor he worked as he says back to back with theodore roosevelt when the latter was police president in new york and governor of the state roosevelt called him the most useful citizen in new york for his work in the rattle with the slum on which he will speak on nov 20th no 9
