marks the final opportunity that the supporters of the brown and white varsity basketeers will have to see their favorites in action on the home court wish ing to conclude the season in the blaze of glory in which the team has travelled throughout coach lingle will trot out his strong est combination when his pro teges line up against the clever gettysburg quintet the lehigh team has nine straight wins to its credit and will do or die in its attempt to annex the tenth this game happens to be the thirteenth on the lehigh schedule but super stition holds no sway among the locals when the referee's whistle was the first defeat that perm state has experienced in two seasons with this defeat came also the defeat of captain walt liggett intercollegiate 135-lb champion by chakin who was given a referee's decision on a time advantage of 1 mm 55 sec cornell piled up points and re gistered decisive defeats against all her opponents she took the first five bouts from columbia and scored a 2 1 8 victory perm perm scored even less points against the red and white team the final score being 23-5 r p i was altogether out of it be ing handed a 31-0 defeat such as lehigh dealt syracuse and because last season the gettysburg team travelled to bethlehem and beat the brown and white in a hard match to eradicate that de feat is the aim of the entire squad although the visitors have not met teams of the same calibre as lehigh has played their record is impressive they stand high in the percentage col umn with victories over w & j western maryland albright ursinus mt st mary's and some minor ones two teams which have fallen con on page 4 col 6 cornell will send an undefeat ed team to lehigh when the ithacans meet the brown and white grapplers on saturday at 7:30 p m in taylor gym both teams sport imposing and decisive victories over the strongest teams of the east so saturday's meet will be beyond a doubt the season's classic cornell will bring a team that has triumphed over columbia pennsylvania perm state and r p i lehigh will send in against these victors wrestlers that proved themselves worthy opponents who defeated teams of equal strength such as syra cuse princeton lafayette and yale cornell caused a startling upset in mat contests and show ed her strength when she de feated perm state 14-9 this one of the first signs of the annual class banquets appeared last night in the form of a meeting of the banquet com mittee of the senior class plans were discussed for the banquet and the tentative date chosen was the fifteenth of april this is during the week after the re turn from the easter holidays and was considered about the best date by the committee the most important feature of the meeting as stressed by chairman waesche was the pay ment of class dues by every member of the senior class if every member pays his dues the banquet tickets will cost the seniors nothing this is the first time that such a thing has ever been possible in an upper class at lehigh and the pres ent senior class is determined to carry the * thing through therefore it is up to every mem ber of the class to pay his dues as soon as possible frosh matmen to wrestle cornell intra-mural meet of sports planned civils hear talk on road building enticing program for frosh smoker frosh courtmen to meet maroon again competition open to any student — all wishing to enter should treasurer of the arcadia at the meeting of that body on monday evening in drown hall in order to have a definite plan for each repre sentative to go by he presented each one with a list of the men in the respective living groups who still owe their dues for this year there were a few groups which are entirely paid up and the other ones are urged to fol low their good example the treasury of the arcadia is prac tically empty so that the col lection of these outstanding dues is essential if the organization is to continue its work the petition of the local chap ter of phi sigma delta for ad mission to the arcadia was granted by a unanimous vote the presenting of the student activities fee plan to the facul ty was authorized by the arca dia this plan was approved by a large majority at the last col lege meeting held in january and the next step in putting it into effect is the approval of the faculty a committee was appointed to decide upon a date and to work out other plans for dad's day to be held sometime during the latter part of april or in may this committee is composed of anderson swindells hubbard patty and chuck hess considerable discussion was con on page 4 col 5 coach gulick's varsity swim ming team will leave saturday morning for a meet with the swarthmore college natators in the little quakers pool following the defeat at the hands of rutgers last week-end the brown and white swim mers are determined to keep their slate clean for the rest of the schedule while the record of the swarthmore team shows two victories and two defeats the meets were all very close and fast the garnet mermen seem to be exceptionally strong this year and should furnish plenty of opposition to the lehigh team captain harmon will have a fast man to oppose in the 440 mitchell having already broken a record in the dela ware meet the work of thomp son in the dives and eiche in the sprints also stand out prom inently in the garnet's vic tories the lehigh team will no doubt be mcconnell lehr 175 temple preparations for friday's smoker and the arrangements for a cabinet banquet were the chief topics discussed at the meeting of the freshman cab inet held last monday evening the smoker to be held to morrow evening will emobdy a number of excellent features the chairman announced that a negro charleston dancer had been engaged and several danc ing girls employed to enliven the affair motion pictures will also be shown plenty of eats will be provided arrangements for the tea dance to be held the tenth of april are well under way the dance committee chairman re ported and an orchestra will soon be secured the cabinet will hold a ban quet on the night of march 22 at the hotel bethlehem george haight has been chair man of the banquet committee the treasurer particularly re quested that class dues be paid and stressed the importance of the dues in the successful car rying on of class activities a fine will be imposed for delin quency in the payment of class obligations the meeting closed with re quests of the chairmen for meetings of their special com mittees the matter of charms was al so brought up and discussion about the design followed last year's taylor gymnasium on march 24 and 25 when profes sor bartlett is planning to put on an intra-mural boxing meet and an intra-mural wrestling meet these events are open to anyone in college who wishes to compete with the exception of those who have been awarded the varsity l in wrestling and gold medals will be given to the winner of these events all those wishing to compete should see him at the gym immediately and sign up for the events in which they expect to enter the intra-mural boxing meet will take place on wednesday march 24 and following weight classes will be open to entries 105-lb 112-lb 118-lb 125-lb 135-lb 145-ib 160-lb and i 75-lb each individual contest will consist of three rounds of two minutes duration with one minute rest in between each round bart has been very fortunate in securing the ser vices of mr downey former heavyweight champion of bos ton tech who will referee all the bouts the intra-mural wrestling meet will take place on thurs day march 25 there will be bouts in the 1 1 5-lb 125-lb 135-lb 145-lb 158-lb 1 75-lb and heavyweight classes men on the frosh wrestling team are eligible to compete but all var sity men are barred don't forget to see er manager and librarian after the balloting it was found that j h knebels 27 had been unanimously elected leader to succeed g long 26 henry h sampson 27 who was librarian last year became manager following k hoffman and e g watkins 28 was elected librarian succeeding h sampson the new leader john knebels has played solo clarinet in the band for two years prior to this he had several months ex perience in the bethlehem band so that he is amply fitted for his new duties sampson has also been a member of the band for several years last year he combined the duties of librarian and as sistant manager having charge of the transportation of the band out to pittsburg on the occasion of the carnegie tech game the new libranian watkins con on page 4 col 6 a very interesting lecture was given on wednesday morning in the physics building for the benefit of the junior civils the subject of this lecture was bituminous pavements and the lecturer was mr c e mc clintock a representative of warren brothers co a well known paving concern of bos ton mass this lecture along with similar ones which will be given from time to time is in tended to supplement the course in highway engineering given by the c e department the subject matter of the lecture dealt with the different kinds of bituminous pavements better known as asphalt roads and the improvements that have been made in them the two general classes of asphalt roads are the penetration type and the mixed method type in the first method the crushed stone is spread over the road sprink led with tar then covered with a finer layer of crushed stone and the road is then roll ed thoroughly this type of pavement is fairly inexpensive and makes a very serviceable road if not subject to heavy traffic in the second method the crushed stone asphalt etc are heated and then thoroughly mixed together this mixture is placed on the road while still hot and rolled this forms a much better type of road than the first kind because all the particles of rock are evenly coat ed with tar which serves to bind them together it was with the improvements of this latter type of roads that the lecturer was chiefly concerned con on page 4 col 4 in the earliest form of as phalt road the materials used were chiefly sand asphalt and the combined musical clubs have once again soared to great heights this time over the eth er waves from wsam last eve ning this station is the pop ular allentown morning call broadcasting station for the le high valley having a large ra dio following reports from all sides have come back to bethlehem complimenting the organization on its fine work con on page 3 col 5 the newspapers from all over this section of the country have spoken well of this last effort of the clubs which includes the mandolin symphony of forty pieces the glee club with thir ty members and the male quar tette the jazz quintett and ha the deutscher verein honor ary german society held its monthly business session and banquet last monday evening in the butztown hotel an elab orate program added to an ex cellent banquet made the meet ing a most delightful occasion the banquet came first in the order of procedure and was fol lowed by a brief business meet ing after all items of business had been disposed of the mem bers enjoyed a social hour dur ing which german songs were sung and a two act playlet was presented by a cast of four con on page a col 2 this playlet the jealous ones acted by j t travis e g mccance mitchell vanßil liard and p h cressman was capably presented and immense ly enjoyed by an understand ing and sympathetic audience it was spoken in german the simple plot dealt with the amus ing mishaps of two men who rented a room in which to spend their spare time free from the cares of
