filbert ex-'o7 is now at the uni versity of pennsylvania by prof l p breckenridge prof l p breckenridge delivered an illustrated lecture last friday in the physical laboratory on the sub ject how to burn bituminous coal in boiler furnaces without smoke prof breckenridge nowi professor of mechanical engineering at the uni versity of illinois was an instructor in the department of mechanical en gineering at lehigh from 1882 to 1891 prof bireckenridge opened his ad dress with some very interesting facts about coal showing several slides of statistics regarding its composition and distinction then followed slides depicting the different types of boil ers in use from tnese it was noticed that the boiler used in the east is different from that of the west this is due to the difference in the coals burned the eastern coal contains more carbon and less volatile matter than coal mined west of the alle ghenies the scarcity of anthracite makes the burning of bituminous necessary then the question arises how can this be done without causing smoke it is known that if combustion be stopped before it is complete smoke will result accordingly that com bustion may not be stopped the bot tom of the boiler is protected by til ing along the entire flame length the other portion of the boiler is left unprotected thus the flame can not reach the boiler at any point and combustion is allowed to continue unimpeded with the result that the heat generated strikes the boiler at the proper point and does not cause smoke in computing the flame length and the distance to be tiled the chem ical composition of the coal and the amount burnt per square foot of grate must be considered in solving this question ' how to burn bituminous coal without smoke it is well to bear in mind that any fuel
