a rather small but extremely appreciative audience gathered in the auditorium oi the physical laboratory last thursday evening to hear mr george kiernan's reading of rip van winkle the last number of the y m c a lecture course the entertainment wednesday january 22 arts and science club meets at dr drinker's at 8.00 thursday january 23 recita tions close at 12.30 oratorio so ciety's rendition of christoforus at 8.15 in the chapel saturday january 25 first basketball game albright in the gym at 8.00 tuesday february 4 second term begins at 8.30 wednesday february 5 c e society meeting in saucon hall at 8.00 saturday february 8 glee club rehearsal at 1.3 b was excellent in every way many people who had seen joe jeffer son in the play were at first skep tical of mr kiernan's ability to impersonate the famous old actor but their fears were dispelled soon after the beginning of the first act when rip makes his entrance the voice expression and man nerisms of jefferson were all skill fully reproduced and at the same time all the other characters were well drawn mr kiernan was at his best in the last act when rip returns after his twenty years sleep to find that none of his friends nor family know him he was enthu siastically applauded at the end and he told several people after wards that he greatly appreciated the cordiality of the audience which made his work much easier minstrel association a meeting of the minstrel as sociation was held over at flick inger's sunday afternoon for the purpose of having the picture taken and also for the election of next year's officers the election re sulted as follows : jaggard 09 manager kenney 10 assistant manager meseroll 09 stage manager r n williams 10 musical director and blanchard 10 secretary and treasurer it was also decided to give 15 to the y m c a and 25 towards the southern trip of the baseball team lectured on geology and its influence upon the history of jamaica at a college lecture in the as sembly hall oi the physical labo ratory on friday january 17th r w raymond of nlew york gave a very interesting talk upon the above subject he confined his lecture chiefly to the geological ef fects that influenced the history of the island rather than the general geology of the land the general appearance of the island as de scribed uniquely by columbus to queen isabella resembles very much a crumpled handkerchief mr raymond stated that every present product of which the banana is the backbone is an im portation even the inhabitants are immi grants the seeds of the numer ous products which later laid the foundation for jamaica's extensive export trade are supposed to have been carried there by imported cattle the island contains nu merous good harbors thus afford ing the natives a low expense in getting their goods to the coast the january burr will be out the early part of next week f h gunsalus 98 who is con nected with the dupont powder works was in town last thurs day the name of technical litera ture edited by harwood frost 93 has been changed to the en gineering digest the wedding of j a prick 03 and miss ruth evelyn linderman o>f fountain hill will take place on wednesday january 29 in the church of the nativity miss lin derman is a daughter of the late robert p linderman 84 who was a trustee of the university from 1896 to 1903 charles j o'n-eill 93 after having been connected with the firm for several years on january 1 became a member of the firm of pennie goldsborough & o'neill patent attornies of washington and new york mr o'neill was formerly on the examining corps of the u s patent office prof j w richards as secre tary represented the american electrochemical society at the memorial service held in honor of lord kelvin in the engineer ing l>uilding new york city on sunday january 12th college meeting the attention of the college was called to the honor system at the meeting held after the lecture on friday morning president thomas opened the discussion and he was followed by sayre and morsack 1908 bakewell mcmurtrie and brumbaugh 1909 and niesen 1910 the speakers were a unit in urging each individual to take a deeper interest in the effective observance of the system espec ially by keeping its success and continuation a prominent aim of his college life thoughtlessness and forgetfulness were assigned as the principle reasons for the violation of the rules of fairness and honesty all of the speeches reflected a serious appreciation of the importance and advantages of the system owing to the fact that t it sheridan 08 manager of the track team has left college an elec tion for his successor was held of the three seniors nominated by the team e r olcott j m fair and r f warnke the first named was elected the musical clubs will recom mence active work after the exam inations in preparation for their home concert in the grand opera house on february 28th arts and science club — meeting at dr drinker's at 8.00 p m on wednesday another interesting fact is that although there are several classes of peoples inhabiting the island > nevertheless there is absolutely no - connection between the various l i
