the regular monthly meeting of the mechanical society will be held on tuesday evening feb 11 at the home of dr drinker the following papers will be read experiences in construction work f t nagel 08 electric pyrometer j h finnic 08 band to play the presence of the university band at the sarthmore game will add additional interest and excite ment to the contest as no re hearsals have been held since the close of the football season all mem bers are requested to report in the phys lab at 2.00 on saturday after noon first call ior candidates the prospects for a successful season in track are quite promising of last year's team the following are still in college 1908 roberts geno behney krause 1909 captain aman gilligan shaw desh mese roll wigton 1910 reilly dunn treat and vanßlarcomi the 1 fresh man class contains some good mater ial which ought to considerably strengthen the team there will be an unusally good chance for new men as the number of vacancies to be filled is quite large owing to grad uations last june sophomores and freshmen are especially needed for the fixture of the team the first practice for the candidates will be held on saturday at 2.30 and will consist of a short walk around the mountain starting and ending at the gym all men who have ever done any track work and also any others who are interested should join this preliminary practice which will be gradually increased in lengtn the regular hours for this work will be at 2.30 on wednesday and satur day of each week the following men and all others who desire to try for the team are requested to report on saturday at 2.30 in the gym 1908 roberts wes terbeke olcott troutman geno beh ney shorkley krause and lvomara 1909 aman gilligan desh shaw zouck wigton ed keife boyd al eck bellis standing football coach at that institution next fall washington birthday speakers chosen the members of the junior class v^ho will compete for the alumni prizes on washington's birthday have been selected this oratorical contest is open to all juniors and the six who write the best essays are given an opportunity to speak there are three prizes of 25 15 and 10 the following is a nst of the speakers and their subjects harold g harvey do we need a national university lloyd f hess the political prin ciples of thomas jefferson l c d greenough " the future of the west indies james g shaw " the social influ ences of metallurgy wilburt r walters the adoption of the federal constitution j s m wharton geographic in fluences in american history the name of the speaker who will deliver the principal address has not yet been given out as has been the custom in the past a large number of alumni will pro bably return for these exercises the desire to see the new buildings in working order will doubtless at tract many game with swarthmore what is likely to be the best and hardest home game in basketball will be played with swarthmore in the gym on saturday night the two annual contests with this team have always been very hotly fought last year both were won by lehigh so that swarthmore will make an extra effort to be successful the quaker five is undoubtedly the toughest proposition on the schedule they have already played several games of which that with pennsyl vania is the most significant the score of 28 to 22 in favor or perm indicates considerable strength a later game with f & m resulted in a victory by the score of 43 to 9 the swarthmore lineup will proba bly be clements and abele forwards boughton center dill and swayne guards of these men clements dill and swayne participated in last year's games for lehigh captain anderson and troutman will proba bly be the forwards street center davies and kiefe guards the record for the last four years is as follows :
