the annual junior oratorical con test icommeimorating washington's birthday was held in the chapel on saturday february 22d music was furnished by the organ ist mr shields the college glee club and the university choir the order of speakers was as fol lows louis c greenough who spo^e on the future of the west indies he showed how the industries of the islands had been developed by american capital and that most of the products were shipped to the united states and that the ultimate end of the islands would be that they would become americanized h g harvey winner of the sec ond prize spoke on the subject do we need a national university he presented the views of authori ties on the subject and discussed all sides he gave as an example co lumbian unversity which a few years ago changed ' its name to george washington in the hope of strengthening its claim in becoming the national university xi f hess won first prize his subject the political principles of thomas jefferson was very ably presented he sjaid that even to day some of jefferson's principles are hated s r schealer spoke on the de velopment of the electrical indus try he showed that electricity is the most economical and efficient motive power obtainable the power can be made at one point and trans mitted a great distance at a small ost j g shaw on the social influ ence of metallurgy won third prize he said that metallurgy is a great influence in the development of a community j s m wharton spoke on geo graphical influences in u s his tory he said that birmingham alabama because of its situation will in twenty-five years be the cen ter of the iron and steel industries in the u s announcement of the decision of the judges charles l crosman head master of the haverford school haverford pa william h dean 86 principal of the harry hillman academy wilkes-barre pa albert h welles principal of the high school scranton pa lecture on evolution about thirty-five men attended the lecture on evolution offered by prof r w hall on last friday morning it was the third of the series the first two having been given to the classes in biology dur ing the latter part of last term dr hall dealt musical clubs at 8.15 wednesday february 26 glee club at 1.30 basketball at 2'oo baseball track and lacrosse at 2.30 gym at 4.00 saturday february 29 basketball perm state in gym at 8.00 of northeastern pennsylvania the northeastern pennsylvania alumni club held its annual ban quet in scranton at the scranton club on last thursday night dr drinker and prof mckibben repre sented the university and each made an address w c anderson 94 acted as toast master and first introduced the president of the club e l bevan 87 other toasts were responded to by w r butler 70 w l raeder 76 and charles enzian 01 the following new officers were elected president a b jessup 95 of wilkes-barrfe first vice presi dent arthur long 89 of scranton second vice president a h lewis 95 of hazleton secretary-treas urer charles enzian 01 of wilkes barre advisory committee w a lathrop 75 arthur long 89 and w h dean 86 about forty-five members of the club were in attendance lehigh 40 n y u l s 12 the basketball team won its fifth successive victory on saturday night by defeating n y u law school 40 to 12 the game was characterized by very fast playing much aggressiveness being shown by both sides and on this account very little teani work could be de veloped by either team the visitors did most of their scor ing from the field in the first half in the second half of the game they succeeded in making only one field goal troutman excelled in the num ber of goals shot by . lehigh while anderson showed great skill in shoot ing fouls keife played a very good defensive game and also made two very pretty long shots lehigh n y u l s anderson .... forward ... steinhart troutman .... forward . . crawford street center newman davies guard chess kiefe guard ....... haas goals troutman at harrisburg on may 30 may have to be called off because of . lack of funds the appropriation from the harrisburg city councils to the park commission by which the meet is to be conducted has been made so low that unless outside aid be secured the project will probably have to be abandoned a sum of from 1,000 to 1,200 will be neces sary to cover the purchase of medals emblems and the expense of polic ing and officials the alumni associations of a number of colleges have already made contributions toward such a fund and a committee from the central pennsylvania lehigh club has been appointed to act in this matter it consists ' of m d pratt 87 william jennings ex-'94 and g c leidy 00 and it has sent letters to the alumni asking for a generous response in order that lehigh maj stand well among the other colleges it is due to the fact that no admis sion can be charged that such out side assistance is required a further effort is also being made to secure an additional appropriation from the harrisburg councils concert on friday the concert to be given by the musical association ir the opera house next friday night will be one of the very best that has been heard here in many years the clubs have had the advantage of the thanks giving concert at reading to give them confidence and they have been working hard since the examinations to further polish up their work there will be more special features than usual this year p s dickey 11 will sing a solo g o bason 08 will play a banjo solo and j r cor bin 09 will render two selections on the violin if the sale of advanced tickets is any indication the faculty is going to support the concert better than usual and the management hopes that the student body will do its share towards making the affair a success art exhibition the bethlehem art exhibition was very auspiciously opened on satur day night when a large number of invited guests gathered in the chapel of the moravian seminary for the private view the walls were hung with about ninety paintings in oil forty watercolors and pastels several tapestries and a number of oriental textiles many of the paintings bear ing the names of well-known ameri can artists of particular interest to all le high men who visit the exhibition will be the work of mr emil gel haar and that of miss cecelia beaux the sister of mrs h s drinker upon whom the university of pennsylvania conferred the hon orary degree of ll.d last saturday three of her portraits of members of dr drinker's family are on ex hibition mr gelhaar is represented by five oil paintings and five water colors and several of them , are of local scenes — early morining at lehigh gap moravian church and along the lehigh river it is impossible to enter into further detail but it can very truth fully be stated that all who attend the exhibition will >. be well repaid it will continue until march 7 and will be open every day from one to five and seven to ten the price of admission is 25 cents annual contest on saturday
