wyandotte hotel alumino thermics subject of interesting lecture on friday another of the friday morning series of lectures was given by m e stutz vice president and treasurer of the goldschmidt thermit co last friday and it proved to be one of unusual inter est prof j w richards made a few introductory remarks touching upon the goldschmidt process of welding as a practical application of scientific knowledge for commer cial use mr stutz paid a glowing tribute to prof richards in the mention of his treatise alumi num which he characterized as the one text book in the world on the subject after explaining the goldschmidt thermic welding process demon strations of its practicableness were given these consisted of welding several broken parts together by means of apparatus arranged on the platform the distinct advantages of the thermic process were enum erated and further elucidated by a number of stereopticon views il lustrations of the welding of street car rails crank shafts engine frames etc showed the broad field of use covered by this remarkable process new england club a number of representatives from the new england states met on friday and transacted the preliminary business in the organ ization of a new england club two temporary officers were elect ed : harry keife 09 chairman and l b treat 10 secretary a committee composed of w j priestley 08 noel cunningham 08 r a burlingame cb and j fisher 11 was also chosen to draw up a constitution and by laws it will be the purpose of this club to work in conjunction with the alumni organization the lehigh-new england club in creating greater interest in le high in the new england states concert at pottsville e h finnic 08 manager of the musical association has made arrangements for a concert at pottsville on friday evening may 1 to be given under the auspices of the pottsville fligh school ath letic association negotiations are also under way for a concert at lebanon on the following evening but no definite statement can be made just yet college lecture an illustrated lecture on races and nations known to the ancient egyptians will be delivered by dr max muller in the physical laboratory at 11.30 next friday dr muller is one of america's best known archeologists arts and science club biology and bacteriology will be the subjects under discussion at the march meeting of the arts and prom a meeting o-f the junior prom enade committee was held on sunday afternoon at ' the kappa alpha lodge it was decided to give the dance on may eighth 8 in drown memorial hall at nine o'clock promptly the commit tee is working to make everything about the dance most desirable and expect it to be very success ful the subscription price was set at 3.00 the first banquet of 191 1 will be held at the wyandotte on fri day april 3 1909 class meetings a short meeting of the junior class was held after the lecture on friday a number of men were voted in the class a special meeting was held sat urday noon in saucon hall to take action on the death of i r coffin the following committee was ap pointed to draw up resolutions and select flowers : h l watson h g harvey and w g moore on friday night the class of 1909 will hold its third annual leathering at the wyandotte at nine o'clock the price per plate is 2.00 while canoeing at easton on friday it is our sad duty to chronicle the death by drowning on friday moirning march 13th of ivan robert coffin who entered the le high university last september mr coffin spent thursday night at lafayette with fraternity breth ren of delta tau delta on fri day morning he accepted an invi tation ifrom two lafayette men messrs t r lathrope and les lie long to accompany them on a canoe trip up the delaware river on their return the canoe was up set in the rapids about two miles above easton and the three men were thrown into the water when overturned it was not a sufficient support for the three men who were hanging to it after they had been in the water for some minutes mr long the best swim mer of the party bravely and cred itably gave up the support to the other two and started to swim to the shore in the swift deep cur rent encumbered with his clothing on account of the swiftness of the river at this place and the fact that because of recent rains and melting snows the river was con siderably swollen he was carried down stream for several hundred feet but finally landed in an ex hausted condition in the mean time mr lathrope helped mr coffin to keep his head above water the weight of two men on one end of the canoe caused it to sink at that end and it seemed best for one of the two to take his place at the other end of the boat so that they might balance one an other mr lathrope therefore started for the other end of the canoe but before he reached it mr coffin lost his grip and sank he did not rise to the surface probably his lungs had previously been partly filled with water tll the meantime a boat had been sent from the shore and was ap proaching the two men in the water but did not reach them in time to save mr coffin mr lathrope was taken to the shore and still showed late in the day the effects of his struggle in the morning continued on page four both mr long and mr lath rope ■exhibited remarkable self control and heroism the former in order to aid his companions heroically risked his life by leav ing the canoe and attempting to swim ashore in the rapid and swollen current mr lathrope for a long time held mr coffin above water and went to the other end of the boat only when it was necessary to do so in order that class book the senior class book is pro gressing fairly well and practically all of the statistical matter has been tabulated the individual biogra phies have been distributed among various members of the class and all of these should be turned into the committee not later than march 25 any suggestions for new and novel innovations will be very wel come attention is again called to the fact that friday is positively the last day for subscribing for the book all photographs must also be taken by the end of this week best class of ob has ever held the most successful and best attended banquet in the history of the senior class was held at the sun inn on thursday night about ninety men were present to sit down to johnny morgan's festive board and although the hotel did not come up to expectations either in food or service nevertheless this did not detract from the jollity of the evening and the committee in charge is to be congratulated upon its successful ■fulfillment of its duties after enduring patiently for two hours or more the listless pace of the waiters in serving the com paratively short menu the banquet ers settled back to the most enjoy able thing of the evening the speeches troutman on the sixth ward exhibited a flow of oratory such as has never been heard from him before even when talking up football heck followed with a very flowery speech on the class his flow of elongated words and pretty phrases frequently brought forth applause during the progress of his eulogy smith in a speech teeming with pathos spoke about that particular paternal order of men in the class who come under the category of our benedicts olcott on athletics spoke of the difficulties under which the man agers of the different teams labor in getting concessions from the athletic committee better known under another name • mccann in closing his speech on the world before us gave a very brilliant and fitting toast to lehigh bren nan by means of personal remin iscences brought out a few phases of college life bell and bech tel in extemperaneous speeches pleased everybody with their quaint wit and good stories others with short spasms were schafer lynch storey and roberts with the singing of the alma mater and a class yell for the committee the last undergraduate banquet of the class of 1908 was over the brown and white vol xv no
