vice president rose and borden recording secretary me 1 creary ; financial secretary a mckenzie ; treasurer f fisher and kocher marshall flick ath letic representative simpson g r wood and j scott ; auditing committee h l miller r e hunt and bley there will be a meeting on wednesday april bth at which all members are urged to be present in order to sign the constitution votes will be cast and the officers elected on the first wednesday af ternoon in may 1909 — bates boyd brumbaugh callen corbin h k ellis w h continued from page three 1908 — ■archer b'ayless barth cannon clarke donaldson c h dorsey j w dorsey duncan jameway lakey lowengrund lynch perley priestly ritter the following is a list of the men who are out for the team : with the first lacrosse game less than a week off the prospects for a winning team are fairly good when college opened last septem ber there were only three of 1907's varsity in college captain dun can barth and morris besides a number of monogram men since then harrower who played on the 04 and 05 teams has re-entered there are in all from sixty to sev enty men who have been attend ing daily practice on the field dur ing the last week a number of these are candidates for the var ious class teams basketball captain the members of the 1908 bas ketball team met in the gymna sium on thursday noon and elect ed w bl davies 09 captain for next year he has played guard for two seasons 1906 and 1908 l b treat f p lawrence and n c ewing of the sopho more class were nominated for assistant manager and will be voted upon at the next college meeting nominations for next year's officers the regular monthly meeting of the c e society was held in sau con hall on wednesday night af ter the reading of the minutes and the report of the treasurer were heard the officers of the society for next year were nominated re sulting as follows : president w g moore f t lawton ; advis or prof f p mckibben secre tary c keife thornburg pad gett ; treasurer miller sturges the society decided to procure a large photograph of prof mer riman to be presented to the c e department f t lawton read the first paper on topographic and hy drographic methods of u s coast survey he was connected with this bureau of the govern ment for several years before en tering lehigh the greater part of which period was spent in the phil ippines his paper included a dis cussion of the methods employed fay the coast survey the purposes which it serves the difficulties which confront its parties and some interesting special features of its work the field of activity of the survey embraces the per fecting of charts for navigation along our coasts the location of lighthouses buoys etc and the re cording of the variations of the tides and currents the second paper soft coal mining methods in western penn sylvania was read by j m fair he said that pittsburg coal is un doubtedly the best soft coal mined in that region it is characterized in the vein by the two 1 beds of slate called binders running through it the vein is from 9 to 14 feet thick it has right angle clearage and headings are run par allel to the planes of clearage both drift and shaft mining are em ployed depending on the nature of the vein electricity for the run ning of cars and compressed air for the mining are the principal powers used stories and refreshments con cluded the evening's proo-ram prof w l wilson read the last paper of the evening which was very interesting on land surveying methods he made a plea for that branch of surveying which is most frequently slighted an interesting fact is that some method of surveying was known as far back as 1450 b c from the fact that references are made to landmarks in the bible the ac curacy of surveying methods are increasing w i tn the increase in value of land lockers in the field house will be assigned on saturday glee club rehearsal at 2.00 on saturday in christmas hall the kappa alpha society has taken the robt h sayre house on the corner of third and wyan dotte streets and expects to move during the easter vacation miners meeting the monthly meeting of the mining society will be held on april 8 and the following pro gram will be rendered : sociological conditions in the coal mining regions jos j komara 08 copper development work in michigan f r imgalsbee mine timbering and trusses p h bishop 08 furnace vs electrolytic re fining of copper worden pope 08 ' the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday april 3 1908 nominations spring teams c e society vol xv calendar no 48 saturday april 4 2.00 glee club rehearsal christmas hall 3.00 baseball univ of vermont vs lehigh lehigh field sunday april 5 y m c a 6.^0 christmas hall ' tuesday april 7 7.30 e e society phys lab monday april 6 new schedule of hours goes into effect 7.45 5.00 brown and white board meeting christmas hall 7.30 mustard and cheese rehearsal at gym wednesday april 8 3.00 la crosse c c n y vs lehigh lehigh field 7.45 mining so ciety in williams hall thursday april 9 4.00 la crosse 1909 vs 191 1 lehigh field 7.30 meeting of arcadia friday april 10 11.00 college lecture 4.00 lacrosse 1908 vs 1 9 10 saturday april 11 3.00 base ball indians vs lehigh lehigh field a picture of the faculty and in structing force will be taken mon day april 6 at 12 m at the west entrance of packer hall notice ! faculty ! baseball and lacrosse baseball practice was held on the diamond for the first time wednesday afternoon after a long batting practice coach garry picked two teams and a long game followed practically every man out was given a chance to show his ability and in general results were very satisfactory six pitch ers and five catchers were used and at least two men in every other position batting in the game was rather light and the pitchers were fairly effective the diamond was soft and consequent ly the fielding was slow the team which was selected as the varsity lined up as follows : pitchers tressler serfass pet ty ;
