tuesday april 28 1 , will long be known as a rod letter day in lehigh's calendar it was a day of rejoicing and celebration mr carnegie to whose generosity we are indebted for our now dormitory taylor hall made his first visit to lehigh mr carnegie and his party arrived on a special train about 11.00 a m on the lehigh valley they were driven to the campus in automobiles and were given a splendid welcome by the stu dents and alumni who were lined up along the terrace in front of packer hall the university band led the songs our guests then drove around the campus and finally alighted at taylor served to our guests the alumni and the faculty and instructors in the college commons while the students were accommodated in the gymna sium between 200 and 250 alumni were present at the commons during the luncheon the glee^olub sang several selections mrs wm r butler of mauch chunk sang annie laurie and coming thro the rye and p p reese 03 gave my folk and the bandelaro the students were admitted to the commons be fore the speeches were given preisident drinker's open ing remarks mr carnegie our friends — mr car negie's guests — our friends from philadelphia and new york gentle men of the board of trustees and the faculty fellow alumni of le high and fellow students of le high two years ago when by the grace of our alumni bouy i was asked to come to lehigh — now nearly three years ago to take up the task that i love yet that has lain heavy upon me i remember that banquet of our alumni at wilkes-barre at which the inscription on the menu card un der my name was something to the effect that he sees pictures in his dreams i did see pictures in my dreams and i dreamed for many years of lehigh now our dreams are coming true and the cause is a united alumni body that have been working for the good of the place we love so well i want to say to you alumni here today that we have a student body today worthy of you and who will be i know your worthy successors lehigh has en tered on its new light its life of love for the student body its life in which we are looking to the good of the boy to the good of his body to the good of his soul as well as the good of his mind and these things are all developing thanks to our alumni and our good friends my heart is so full with it all that it would be impossi ble for me to express what i would wish to say fortunately there are with us today men with tongues far better than mine first i want you to hear what has been written to us by a man whom we all love — wil liams of 75 i would say to our guests that professor williams is the donor of our finest college building a most loyal and active son of le my dear drinker — ■i wish i could be with you on this day when you gather to do honor to mr carnegie but not being able i send a word as i can not remain quiet on this day we celebrate as it is not a common day there have been many days or rejoicing for le high when we welcomed larger buddings or added endowments or any of the thousand and one things which make a university rejoice but these have become common days with the university world we are used to the reception of numerous commodious recitation rooms under an attractive exterior or an aggre gate of well appointed and furnished laboratores these add to the ease with which work is done and enable us to do our duty to greater num bers but they do not change the spir it with which the work is done nor do they create in the undergraduate body something before non-existent on this account such days are of or dinary account and not to be men tioned beside to-day when a new de parture is inaugurated a new spirit created a new possibility extended to our undergraduates which under the blessing of god is to create a new lehigh you and i and the other old fel lows who lived through our under graduate life under a dormitory sys tem have been able to pity the later generations of lehigh undergraduates when we saw them scattered broad cast over the bethlehems living any where and nowhere—as far as le high university was concerned with out coherence without common sym pathies and ignorant of the very things which make for culture we oldsters value the training we re ceived in these recitation rooms but we would not for a moment mention it beside that period of our life when continued on page 2 b h s l club the may meeting of the bethlehem
