experience after these preliminaries coach petrikin gave a short talk on the method of batting to be used by his pro teges it will take many of the sluggers some time to become accustomed to this manner of wielding the stick and all were advised to get into trim by prac ticing a short time each day at present no regular place for practice has been assigned to the yearlings and no practice will commence until this condi tion has been remedied al though more men are expected to report at a later date the quantity of material is very meager active preparations for the coming production of the mus tard and cheese club were be gun at a meeting held at drown hall wednesday evening the reports of the various managers indicated the show was well un der way and that two perfor mances in bethlehem were as sured con on page 3 col 1 mr darcy who is ned way burn's first man has several col lege shows to his credit and is expected to arrive to assume his duties as coach on march 6 the music for the show has been accepted by the coaches who have approved of it as be ing very good and appropriate for the show wm gairns 26 was elected to the club as mu sical director w h rich 26 was recommended and elected to the position of assistant stage manager chas goess ner 2 7 was appointed to take charge of the costumes last wednesday afternoon the students of lehigh had the pleasure of hearing mr jos eph t singerwald professor of economic geology at john hop kins university lecture on his experiences while doing explor ation work for an oil company in south america the lecture was illustrated with slides and was very interesting and highly instructive to all after being introduced by professor benjamin miller mr singerwald started his talk with a description of the trip up the amazon here he gave a short description of the ama zon it is the largest river sys tem in the world ocean liners going up it 2,500 miles and steamers 3,500 miles they proceed wfa the amazon to quin tos stopping at manoos here they transferred to ca con on page 2 col 5 sophs to put on unique smoker lacrosse practice to start shortly board of control held important meeting monday preliminary work to be held in camp coppee — frosh to report professional entertainers en gaged — many other novelties obtained all welcome sport schedules approved managers ratified and other steps taken new b b league schedule ready the brown and white am phibians will meet their first real test on saturday when they journey to west point to match strokes with the army nata tors this will give the lehigh swimmers a good opportunity to compare themselves with rut gers the present champions of the middle atlantic states swimming association for the latter conquered the cadets by a 42 to 20 victory earlier in the season the cadets also lost to columbia by the close score of 32 to 30 the meet hinging on the outcome of the 200 yard re lay in the meet with rutgers the scarlet tankmen took every first place except in the dives which was won by allan of the army lehigh has high hopes for a victory this saturday and is pointing in special effort for the meet next week with the scarlet the probable entries for sat urday will be 50 yard dash riker and ral eigh for lehigh reeder and o'keefe for the army 100 yard free style riker and raleigh lehigh ; brady and finlay army 200 yard breaststroke : lead er and lee lehigh elliott and dwyer army 440 yard free style harmon and pennington lehigh brady and vanatta army 150 yard backstroke wynn and hobbs lehigh paris and gimmler army dives hobbs and hayes le high allan and harrington army relay harmon riker wynn and raleigh lehigh o'keefe raymond hubbell and howard army with prospects of completing the season with but the army set-back chalked against them the lehigh varsity basketeers will endeavor to ring up their seventh consecutive victory when they line up against the maroon and white courtmen from lafayette in taylor gym nasium on saturday evening using comparative results of the season and last saturday's encounter between the two teams as a criterion it is eas ily understood why lehigh will enter the fray a heavy favor ite but it is a well establish ed fact that whenever lehigh meets lafayette all advance dope is apt to suffer after turning in a victory on the lafayette court the brown and white basketeers should have a comparatively easy time in subduing the maroon on the home court playing on the home floor will undoubtedly help nulify any nervousness erratic team-work or poor shooting on the part of the brown and white players the effects of the two weeks lay-off will probably have been completely worn off by the time they trot out on the court to morrow evening during the past week they have been sub jected to strenuous workouts which have resulted in the per fection of the teamwork and all around play con on page 4 col 6 displaying the same enthu siasm that lehigh and her co horts have of winning this clash the eastonians have been prac ticing diligently for the game with the hopes of bringing back the bacon to college hill a victory for the visitors would necessitate in the playing of a rubber game should this prove inevitable both teams are scheduled to play the third or although the lehigh varsity matmen will be idle on satur day there will be plenty of ac tivity in the lower gym when the frosh wrestlers make their first home appearance of the season the yearlings opened their season with a victory over blair academy at the latter place last saturday but with the university of pennsylvania the frosh will have a more for midable opponent in winning from blair the lehigh frosh paid dearly for their victory for two of the first string men will be among the missing when the team squares off against perm bate man a clever 1 2 5 pounder dis located a shoulder and is lost to the team for the season carl persbacker a bethlehem high product and the frosh 1 35 pounder will also be on the shelf with injured ribs his hurt is not serious and it is expected he will be ready for service when lehigh frosh oppose bethlehem high on the latter's mats the following week-end with no tryouts scheduled for the varsity until friday of this week when work will be begun in earnest for the invasion to kale the following saturday coach sheridan devoted much of his time to the frosh try outs closely fought contests were witnessed with the follow ing results in the first batch of tryouts : 1 1 5 pound class : bellringer threw fernandez in 3:50 hay es won from thompson on deci sion with advantage of 4:26 yeager won from morrison on decision with advantage of 2 minutes 135 pound class bryan won con on page 4 col 6 senior class comms announc'd the civils held their first meeting of the new term on monday evening february 15 in the physics building this was a joint meeting of the le high and lafayette student chapters and the lehigh val ley section of the a s c e the principal speaker of the evening was dr j a waddell consulting engineer of new york city dr waddell chose as his top ic in what way and why does an engineering education fail to attain its possibilities dr waddell's address on this subject consisted of a very con cise analysis of the deficiencies of the average college engineer ing course and why so few of the graduates of engineering schools fail to attain any great distinction in engineering work as stated by dr waddell some of the principal disadvan tages of most engineering cour ses are as follows : con on page 2 col 3 they attempt to teach too many relatively unimportant subjects when they don't even have enough time available to teach the essential ones the present engineering courses are too short ; at least six years are required for a good course in engineering and preferably sev en the student should be given a broad general course in engineering and there should not be too much of an attempt tcf specialize in the different branches of engineering most college courses contain too many lectures and it is impossible to teach engineering subjects thor oughly in that way a great many teachers are more or less incompetent no one should be allowed to teach unless he has a thorough knowledge of his subject both theoretical and practical one of the principal track and field men report radical change in band takes place senior e e.'s take inspection tour spend mid year vacation as guests of large elec trical companies coach kanaly to hold in door meetings until la ter date commencemen a rtr a n g e ments-to be gotten un der way immediately plans are made to have concert band and com bined band several matters which are of vital interest to the student body were discussed at the board of control meeting held on monday afternoon in drown hall in addition to the ratifica tion of spring sports schedules for all three varsity teams as well as frosh baseball and foot ball the board placed its stamp of approval on an intersectional swimming meet to be held here some time between march 22 and 27 with leland stanford university of california the western mermen are coming east with several champions in their ranks to compete in some championship events and desire to arrange some dual meets while here con on page 3 col 2 the board also approved of lehigh's entrance into the mid dle atlantic states intercolle giate basketball association on the two year basis by this is meant that lehigh must meet at least four of the other mem bers of this association for two years this will cause little change in the schedules because there are already several of the other teams listed among our opponents a complete list of new instructor in english dept one need not go far in search of suitable friday night enter tainment this week for the sophomore smoker tonight is capable of providing as entertain ing and enjoyable an evening as may be found in bethlehem it is rather a departure in le high smokers and the program tends toward the unusual and is quite different from that of pre vious class smokers the smok er is not limited only to mem bers of the sophomore class but rather the whole college is invited to be the guests of the sophomore class for the night president avery who will act in the capacity of chairman for the evening has a few matters of business to bring before the class following the short bus 1 mess session the program of the evening shall be opened by the lamar sisters who will en tertain with a song and dance revue it was necessary that the sisters be placed early on the program so that it might not interfere with their appear ance at an allentown theatre where they are playing this week the committee was very fortunate in securing the ser vices of these actresses who have consented to donate their entertainment for the lamar sisters form one of the best known sister teams in vaude ville . * following the dance number con on page 4 col 5 plans are under way at the present time to begin early la crosse practice as soon as camp coppee is completely repaired the camp has been undergoing a great change in the last few days the floor has been re moved and the dirt floor grad ed so that on the whole it will make a fine place for practice of baseball and lacrosse until the upper field is fit for use the windows are being barred and skylights are being placed in the roof to improve the light ing these alterations will be completed about the middle of next week and at that time the baseball and lacrosse aspirants will begin the spring practice when the lacrosse men assem ble for the practice there will be six of last year's men among them to form the nucleus of a strong aggregation captain robinson requests that all of these men report regularly so that the rudiments of the game such as body checking and circle dodging can be taught to the new men who report for the varsity for the first time coach o'neill will not be bulbs placing the filament seal ing and testing were demon con on page 4 col 3 the initial call for track and field men was answered by some fifty odd men wednesday and thursday afternoons in the trophy room starting monday feb 22 with the pole vault candidates the purpose of having the men meet at this early date is to enable coach kanaly to start a series of specialty meetings for the men in the different events the program which calls for meetings up to the time out-door work starts has been carefully worked out and calls for a meeting on monday and thursday afternoons at each meeting
