no 61 graduating class 1908 south bethlehem pa wednesday june 10 1908 lafayette wins baseball series takes last game by 7 to 4 calcalus cremation strong for this and some other ac tions of the supporters of both teams the desired run to make things even was made in the sixth when uptegraff and anderson each doubled to center again in the eighth after galbraith and an derson had each singled the neces sary hit to bring them in from third and second was not forth coming sterner fanning for the third time and ' boyer going out at first disaster struck us in the ninth conover and kelley reached first on bunts which boyer and serfass should have easily fielded to first they were advanced a base by matson's sacrifice edwards hit to boyer who threw very poorly to mcmurtrie and conover was safe kellev came in on swank's single and edwards was also safe baccalaureate sermon commencement week this year was opened on saturday evening with the cremation of calculus on the campus at 8 o'clock in every way the affair was a marked suc cess the usual large audience of alumni students and towns folk witnessed the trial of the heartless foe of the 1910 class and his cremation on the lot in front of williams hall after a delight ful musical program of 9 numbers by the allentown band the fiery procession of red gowned sopho mores advanced with the fated dummy that individual re ceived little mercy at the hands of his captors and after a speedy trial was hastened to his doom the committee in charge of the affair follows : f m sayford chairman c s kenney n j ewing g b troutman d g williams j c gorman r n williams the base ball team was defeated j to 4 on saturday in the third ' game of the lafayette series before the usual large commencement crowd both teams played errat er ball in several innings and la fayette won out because they were better able to hold themselves to gether in an emergency the visitors scored a total of four runs in the ist inning through heavy hitting and slow and inac curate fielding the excitement seemed contagious and in our half three men crossed the plate after schneider had filled the bases by hitting two and walking another after this wild start both pitchers settled down to hard work our first chance to tie the score came in the third when galbraith hit at a long one to left field but was so hindered by the over enthusiastic rooters that he was caught at the plate no censure can be too by the rev walter r breed d.d of cleveland o the baccalaureate sermon was preached to the graduating class sunday in packer memorial chapel by the rev dr walter r breed of cleveland o dr s u mitman was in charge of the services and the boy's choir of trinity rendered a most excellent program the chapel was crowd ed with alumni students and friends of the university j ■in his sermon dr breed spoke of two ideals which he said are proclaimed today as sufficient for the guidance of life — that of self culture and that of self-sacrifice after dwelling upon these ideals he declared therer must be a fu sion a combination between these two for a thoroughly significant life he said that an ideal should not only.be a working theory but must be made a reality continued on page 8 vol xv the brown and white lehigh university
