thermody namics its basis in intention and common sense is the title of a pamphlet written by prof w s franklin and reprinted from the electrical review issue of septem ber bth 1906 the object of this article is to give a simple account of that fundamental principle in physics which is known as the second law of themodynamics new buildings work on the dormitories is be ing vigorously pushed w f danzer & co of south bethlehem have the contract for construction the excavations for drown hail and the college commons are also begun and well under way so that these important improvements will probably be ready for occupancy by september 1907 in order that access to these buildings may be easier several new roads are be ing constructed the western ap proach at the rear of the presi dent's home being completed comprehensive plans have been adopted for the development of the new grounds back of packer hail and the gymnasium professor merriman has been granted a year's leave of ab sence by the trustees during this time he will continue to reside in south bethlehem and attend to the more important administrative duties of the department of civil engineering but in addition he expects to spend several days of each week as a consulting engineer at 45 broadway new york city where he wil be associated with clarence w hudson well-known as a specialist in structural and bridge engineering his services and high reputation are thus fittingly recognized notice this issue of the brown and white will be distributed free among the entire student body until november 1 the paper will be sent free of charge to every freshman every man in college should be a subscriber as we can not give you the college news effi ciently useless you help us by giv ing your support summer schools about 200 students were re gistered in the various optional summer schools lehigh university began its forty-first scholastic year to-day ( the customary opening exercises were held in the chapel at 3.30 p m president drinker announced the changes in the teaching staff at the meeting of the board of trustees held on june 13th im mediately after the close of the exercises of university day as sistant professors arthur e meaker and preston a lambert were appointed professors and mr john h ogburn was appointed assistant professor in the depart ment of mathematics assistant professor john duer irving was appointed professor of geology assistant professor philip m palmer was appointed professor of modern languages and litera tures mr barry macnutt in structor in the department of physics was appointed assistant professor in that department in the department of chemistry dr chandler's resignation taking effect september ist was announc ed in our issue of august 30th at which time the resolutions of the board of trustees adopted august 29th relating to his retire ment were published they are here reproduced for the benefit of our university subscribers who were out of town at that time resolved that the trustees of lehigh university desire to ex press on the retirement of dr chandler rendered necessary by his continued ill-health their grate ful appreciation of his long-con tinued and valuable services to the university and their assurance on his retirement of the hearty esteem in which he is held by them all entering on his duties in 1871 he has been identified with the uni versity almost from the date of its foundation and faithful to its interests throughout as profes sor of chemistry he has been dur ing this long period at the head of one of the principal departments of instruction of the university how well his duties were perform ed is evidenced by the record and standing of his graduates who hold positions of high responsibility throughout the world to these duties as professor were added those of librarian of the lucy packer linderman library a posi tion which he has filled with marked ability and his services in that capacity have been of great come out all have been showing up fairly well the work for the present is prin cipally punting and light practice it is expected that before the end of this week the squad can line up and begin heavy writing although issued only last spring it has been adopted by more than fifty universities and colleges in the united states a great many books have been written on the sub ect of electrical engineering but this is the first to treat of it in an elementary way suitable for use as a jtext-book the electrical world of july 14th 1906 in its review of the book concludes by saying the book is an excellent example of fine typographic jart and is almost entirely free from the errors that usually mar a first edition it is well adapted for general use in classes just entering upon electrical engineering and merits a place in all electrical li braries professors franklin and esty are to be congratulated upon having produced a book which so thoroughly fills a long-felt want in this branch
