after opening with the alma mater and three lehighs draper 07 manager of the foot ball team spoke a few words about the pressing need of a large squad he also asked for better support for the college laundry and an nounced the intention of having a special train for the game with pennsylvania next saturday gilmore 07 secretary of the arcadia read a report of the trial held by the honor court during the examinations last june at which two members of the class of 1909 were found guilty of cheating in the german examination and suspended for one year the election for athletic repre sentative at large was then held r s porter 07 being elected by j large majority announcement was made that the first college smoker of the year would be held on friday sept 28th at the gymn president hanst of the boxing club called for candidates to com pete at the various smokers short addresses were made by mc minn 07 business manager of the 1907 epitome ; llesse 07 busi ness manager of the brown and white and by barth 07 business manager of the burr asking for better support from the student body the following committees were appointed by carlock president of the senior class : founders day hop — cheering practice 8 p m college smoker in gymnasium saturday sept 29 3 p m foot ball lehigh vs u of p at philadelphia freshman organization the meeting of the freshman class in the gymnasium after the opening exercises in the chapel was as usual addressed by the president of the junior class it d smith the college customs which the freshman must observe were read and they were urged to do their best in upholding all the college institutions draper 07 spoke of the need for foot ball men and secured the names of all who have ever played a list of these men will be handed to the hustling committee and all will be seen very soon if they are not now on the squad kniffen was elected tem porary president attention is called to a new course offered as an optional for 1 technical students desiring some acquaintance with tlie standpoint method and more practical results of psychology following is the statement of the course as announc ed in the current register : 9 elementary general psycho logy an outline sketch of the broader facts cf human nature with special reference to the bear ing of psychology on practical life lectures and demonstrations in the laboratory this course is de signed for students who have but little time to spare for psychology it fs open to all students of the university first term one hour such subjects as sensations per ceptions illusions imagination memory reasoning emotions in stinct habit attention character and the will will be concretely dis cussed and a general account of certain selected topics of common interest such as heredity and mental training adolescence and its diseases mental hygiene sleep dreams hypnotism etc will be given prof davis will be in the laboratoiy of psychology on the top floor of the physical labora tory every morning excepting saturday of this week or at other times by appointment to confer with interested students relative to plans of the course a two hour course in experi mental phychology is open to stu dents desiring a more technical training in the application of exact methods to mental and nervous pro cesses • assistant professor c li whit man of the department of en glish has not returned after his year's leave of absence but has gone to rutgers college dr e n s thompson of the same de partment is at yale interclass rush the interclass rush on open ing day was harder fought than any in recent years the fresh men were well coached and for a time strenuously resisted the at tempts of their opponents to start them turning this movement at length succeeded and when time was called the sophomores had won by a narrow margin the dif ference in numbers in favor of the freshmen was about the same as it has been for the past two years dr william r whitethorne formerly instructor in physics has been appointed to the teaching force of pratt institute brooklyn lehigh defeats albright 21 to o lehigh began her toot ball sche dule on saturday afternoon by playing albright college three touchdowns tw;o goal's and one field goal gave lehigh twenty-one points while the opposing team failed to score the game was par ticularly interesting because of the new code of rules used these proved to be quite puzzling to most of the spectators and a fair esti mate of what foot ball will be like under the changed regulations could not be gathered from one contest play opened by albright kicking off to spiers who advanced 15 yards the first line-up surprised the crowd for when the ball was snapped spiers was seen breaking through tackle for a spectacular 75 yard run burlingame was used to make the first touchdown which re sulted on the next play spiers kicked goal score 6-0 albright again kicked off and lawyer advanced 20 yards lawyer gained 6 yards around end when spiers made another run cf 30 yards the pigskin was carried down the field steadily until the 8 yard line was reached and here the first penalty was given the ball being taken back 15 yards spiers tried a field goal but missed and eisenburg kicked from the 25-yard line to fulton successive ad vances resulted in lawyer making the second touchdown brennan failed to heel the ball on a punt so that lehigh had no chance to try for a goal score 11-0 albright now had the opportun ity of advancing the ball but was unable to do so due to some splen did work on defense of the brown and white albright got the ball several times during the remainder of the half but could not keep it in her possession in the second half coach dick son placed the scrub team with two exceptions on the field and though their play was not as con sistent as the regulars they man aged to score 10 points on a touch down and a field goal this period of contest saw the officials exercis ing their power of penalization under the new rules to the fullest extent the kickoff was received by pottriger but albright found no 2
