the first meeting of the civil engineering society was held in saucon hall on wednesday even ing october 3 the meeting was a success from the intellectual and social point of view and was very well attended indeed especially by the members of the class of 09 the meeting was called to order by president gordon kent who gave a short history of the society for the benefit of the 1909 men the percentage of active mem bers last year was as follows : faculty 100 per cent 07 75 per cent 08 60 per cent and 06 last with about 20 per cent this year a prize of 8 will be awarded for the best paper read before the society prof wilson will grade the papers also a prize of 5 will be award ed for the best poster drawn dur ing the year mr conkling is to be the judge both prizes to be awarded at the spiel in june prof wilson delivered the open ing address he urged the mem to buckle down and make this the most successful year in the history of the society he also urged that there should be more discussion at the meetings and more questions asked next was read a paper by robert porter 07 on " the wilkes barre and hazleton trolley shaler g smith next delivered his paper on some of his exper iences during the summer an excellent feed completed the program of the evening the next meeting is scheduled for novem ber 7 the chemists aud chemical en gineers of the three upper classes numbering 27 met october 3 in the chemical laboratory to discuss the formation of a society to be known as the chemical society of lehigh university r l lafferandre acting as chairman called the meeting to order and stated its purpose the constitution and by-laws were then read by m h ulman chairman of a committee of three which had been appointed to draw them up after some discussion it was moved and seconded that the constitution be adopted as read and the motion was carried a motion was made and seconded that one-half of the members of the society should constitute a quorum the motion was carried the officers of the society were regularly elected as follows president r l lafferandre 07 vice president m h ulman 07 secretary a guerber 08 treasurer t coyle 09 prof h m uumann was unani mously elected adviser of the so ciety president h s drinker and prof w h chandler were unani mously elected to honorary mem bership of the society two committees were appointed by the president viz program committee — clewell 08 guerber 08 coyle 09 social committee — hatter 08 ganser 08 gilligan 09 love 09 h n keife 09 it was decided that the society shall meet on the third thursday evening of each month the results of the exams held june 2nd for assistant engineer of the board of water supply of greater new york have been an nounced about 700 men were examined of whom 150 passed the following lehigh men have been placed on the eligible list : m m farley j h c gregg w b grubble h h lauer h r stoeker tau beta pi the football team held a very encouraging practice wednesday afternoon owing no doubt to our scoring upon pennsylvania last saturday there was a large squad on hand so that after picking the varsity and scrub there was still a crowd of men left waiting to make good after the usual rounding up work coach dickson lined the varsity against the sophomores the varsity had more dash than usual and gains were made through the center just as determinedly as around the end the forward pass worked beautifully fumbles being on the decline all the gains were not made without effort as the sophomores put up a plucky fight morris davies and ham being much in evidence the varsity line showed great improvement while spiers street and lawyer by their fast team work and hoppin by his ability at field kicking brought hopejio the undergrads on the side lines dick senior ex-'o7 will be on the line-up for george washington university and will be welcomed by his lehigh friends at saturday's game as a matter of comment the cheering practice tuesday was a howling success and on satur day with the men supported by such a full cheering section coach dickson promises to put forward a winning team wednesday's line-up : varsity sophomore haug r c frome wallower r t dobson shorkley r g beaumont westerbeke c small landis 1 g osbourne burlingame 1 t struble amon 1 c phillipi hoppin g ham spiers r h schenk lawyer 1 h morris street f davies bryn mawr has begun its twenty second academic year with one of the largest freshman classes in its history numbering more than one hundred and twenty the lehigh chapter of the tau beta pi held its opening meeting of the year at the beta theta pi house on tuesday evening im portant business was transacted and plans for the year were talked over h j groenninger was elected chapter correspondent of the bent senior e ms the following are the positions held by the 1907 miners during the past summer : r s archibald was employed by the columbia chemical co do ing clerical work j b carlock was chief of party of the bethlehem steel co.'s sur veying corps at south bethlehem h p dyson worked on a farm j h farrell ran levels on a pipe line survey for the cleveland cliffs iron co j f hanst was transitman for the morgantown & kingwood r r at parkersburg w va and assistant engineer at the atlantic mines tunnelton w va a w hesse was transitman on general outside surveys in somer set pa for the consolidation coal co of frostburg md c t kriebel was employed on sewer and general municipal work at alliance pa the theta xi fraternity has moved from 43 1 cherokee street to 541 seneca street lehigh university vol xiv foot ball a c society
