pennypacker to represent the state at the meeting of the american mining congress which meets at denver colorado october 1 6th to 20th saturday's game with haverford resulted in a five-to-nothing defeat which may be attributed to inex cusable fumbling although hav erford's team was heavier their touchdown was not a result of straight football a combination of miserable fumbles together with a 10-yard penalty allowed the qua kers to cross our goal line although the game was a fea tureless one much favorable com ment was passed on the predomi nance of kicking it is quite evi dent that the new rules tend toward open play both haverford and lehigh sup ported their teams royally from the bleachers and it might prove ad vantageous to us to see what a small bunch of fellows with college spirit and megaphones can do to help their team win c brown kicked off for haver ford the ball rolling back of le high's goal hoppin punted out to the middle of the field from le high's 25-yard line haverford failed to make the required distance and haines kicked to hoppin who returned the ball 5 yards lehigh went through haverford's line for 2 yards but fumbled mercur fall ing on the ball spiers lawyer and street bucked haverford's line for short gains carrying the ball to the quakers 25-yard line here lehigh fumbled haverford getting the ball after earning a first down by short end rushes haverford ' kicked out of bounds and hoppin punted to the quakers 40-yard line haverford tried a quarter 1 back kick and one of their men fell j on the ball on our 30-yard line i after several short gains haver ford tried for a field goal which was blocked haverford getting on the ball they made a second try lehigh blocked but was offside as a result of which they were penal ized 10 yards it was haverford's ball on our 6-yard line and on the third down jones was shoved through right tackle for a touch down haines missed an easy goal continued on page five the y m c a management is to be congratulated upon their most successful reception to the undergraduate body and especially to the freshman class last satur day evening president and mrs h s drin ker members of the faculty and their wives and other friends of lehigh received the students until the opening of the program at 8.30 daniels 07 y m c a presi dent made the opening address in troducing president drinker who said that lehigh has the reputation of always doing what is right and so it should carry on the y m c a in the same manner and make it the backbone of the university as he finished the haverford foot ball team who had to make the nine o'clock train gave a yell for lehigh in farewell the entire as sembly returning the compliment with three lehigh s and a haver ford next speaker was mr how ard y m c a secretary who explained the object of the y m c a at lehigh and his position in it in all his relations with the fellows he wishes to be not the secretary but one of the fellows and a friend of everyone from the president to the smallest fresh man at the conclusion of his remarks the mandolin and guitar club ren dered several selections and mrs finnic favored the audience with a song and encore all of which were very much enjoyed mr daniels then called upon senior president carlock who an nounced that the arcadia offers a prize of 25.00 for an original le high song to be characteristic and novel as lacrosse captain he he also announced that the first lacrosse practice would be the fol lowing wednesday afternoon every body out captain troutman of the foot ball team was then induced to come forward and in a few words he said the team would to the best of their ability finish out the season with continued on third page mr l n sullivan instructor in metallurgical design has resigned and is now employed by the com panie real del monte y pacbuca in hidalgo mexico mr sullivan has charge of the erection of a new mill for the company year holds the first meeting of urged all the members to take an active part to make the coming year successful the second tuesday of each month was adopted for the meet ings which are to begin at 7.30 papers were read by j w beyer and j i porter mr beyer's paperiwas on mccall's ferry power plant the plant is capitalized at 10,000,000 it will utilize the water power of the susquehanna river by building a dam a short distance below mccall's ferry and will distribute about 100,000 h p to the cities of baltimore lancaster reading and smaller towns in the vicinity the maximum flow of 700,000 cv ft per second and mini mum flow of 3,000 cv ft per second will be equalized as much as pos sible by the dam which will create a lake 6 miles long and 3 mile wide the power house is of concrete 500 ft long and 60 ft wide it has ten wheel-pits in each of which are two turbines on the same shaft the generators are 7,500 k w the transmission voltage is 60,000 ihe company has built a village called italy for its foreign workmen and is also housing the higher class labor near the plant at present two shifts of 1,000 men each are kept busy a novel feature is the presence of a saloon and a jail on the grounds mr porter's paper was on the wilkes-barre and hazelton third rail system there are three lines between wilkes-barre and hazel ton the p r r which travels 50 miles has four trains a day and takes 2 hours for the distance ; the lehigh valley which takes 2 hours 30 minutes to travel 60 miles and the wilkes-barre & hazelton which takes t hour and 20 minutes to go 30 miles and runs trains every hour it has the disadvantage
