messiah the olden composer's masterpiece was ideally rendered at the hearst greek theatre university of california yesterday afternoon under the direction of prof wolle there was a chorus of 230 voices not a big chorus for a great oratorio production as oratorio choruses go but it was splendidly trained and everybody in it was able to sing everybody in it did sing too and with professor wolle smg the university orchestra of sixty-five pieces already known as the best orchestra that the west has ever been able to call its own as director everybody in it had to maintained a perfect balance of in strumental music with the vocal ; and the whole effect was worthy of handel and a glory to the uni versity of california and its distin guished professor of music prof wolle it will be remember ed was university organist until two years ago when he accepted the chair of music at the university of california found found in the chapel after the rendition of palestrina's 1 mass tuesday evening lenberg college the event ful filled all that the most sanguine had hoped for the rendition of this old mass by this modern choir was something more than unique ; it was a revelation of simplicity sweetness and reverence of spirit every one in the large audience when the last note had died away must have coincided with the senti ment of thanks to conductor marks and his eight singers that president drinker expressed in his short introductory address it was a privilege indeed to have been pre sent at this splendid rendition following president drinker professor marks gave an introduc tory talk which included a short biographical sketch of paiestrina and an account of the circum stances that led to the writing by him of three masses designed to retain the good in polyphonic music while adding a reverence that the popular compositions lacked in outlining the purpose and scope of the marcelli mass the speaker by comparing it with other types pre pared the audience for the style of music to be presented a few words told the history of the paies trina choir of allentown — how this group of singers who had first sung one of the numbers of the marcelli mass as a lecture illu stration had continued and learned the entire mass with the result now of their oublic presentation of it it was without accompaniment that the choir rendered the mass beginning with the magnificent kyrie to many it seemed that this number was the finest of the entire list particularly the christe eleison passage in which the beautiful harmony of the successive voices is beyond description the gloria came next and then the lengthy credo divided by a brief intermission into two parts the printing on the program of the were sung together with an english latin in which all the numbers continued on page three apropos of the rendition of the marcelli mass the following might be of interest : one of p'alestrina's noblest com positions his stabat mater has recently played a prominent role in deciding between two musical theories of harmony the modern theory of harmony is based largely on the principles enunciated by heilmholtz in his " lenre von den tonempfindungen in this work he contrasts modern music with the old church music and par ticularly with palestrina's helm holtz was not able applying his principles to recognize the rela tions of tine chords which make much of palestrina's music so beau tiful and characteristic he re marks of the first line of the sta bat mater : here we find a series of chords of the most various pitches from a sharp to f sharp apparently scattered promiscuously amongst each other contrary to all our rules of modulation we also in the second place miss prin cipally that observance of the rela tions of consecutive chords in summing up his discussion helm holtz says : although we recognize in palestrina's and in gabriel s com positions a fine artistic effect and in so far must grant them to have command of harmony yet there is the
